No, as usual he played in central defense and made a very good job of it.. Infact you could say AaB "beat" the Italians at their own game, playing very tactical clever and also showing Italian sharpness and efficiency in attack.

Btw, just so ppl dont get confused.. the title says AaB vs. Sampdoria, but it was AaB Aalborg playing away, so a very good result for Califf and AaB..

I believe this is his 7th UEFA Cup game this season.

Off the line-up by Soccernet, he seemed to have played as a right defender in 3-5-2.
According to the Aab website before the match, they were planning on fielding a 4-5-1 instead of their usual 4-4-2.

Was this Califf's first game in European competition?
As team captain at AaB, Califf is ofcause a regular starter and they progressed to the UEFA Cup through the UEFA Intertoto Cup, where Califf scored an important goal when they eliminated Gent from Belgium in the final :

What sort of grades is Danny getting in Denmark?
Obviously, being made captain is an honor from his coach.
On a couple of plays in this match, he seemed a step slow.

In central defense speed is not everything and Califf is surely not the quickest or the most technical skilled among central defenders, but besides being excellent at heading, he has reached a point where he get the job done at a consistent high level because he knows his limits... I belive I read somewhere in this forum that Califf lacked tactical skills and anticipation when he played in the MLS ?, but his time in Denmark has done him well, and then ofcause he has also turned 27 and central defenders usually get better the older and more mature they get..
