1:0 to the "Russkies" in the 1st half.
A slight disparity in payrolls here.
Anatoliy Timoschuck is the highest paid player in Russia at €4M/Y.
Zenit is owned by Gazprom.

I don't know much about Zenit but, 23 games into their season, they are tied for the league lead w Spartak (although behind on goal differential) so they should be pretty good. Isn't Hiddink the coach?

Gooch just got a yellow for a light push on a Zenit player off the ball. The Zenit player retaliated with a push of his own and got a yellow as well.

I've only been watching since the 40th minute mark, but both teams have had about equal goal-scoring opportunities thus far. Very intense game, fast-paced and end-to-end. Onyewu having a decent game from what I've seen. A couple of guys with a US flag in the stands.

The first goal Zenit scored was a 25-yard rocket into the back of the net. The second goal, however, could have been avoided if Gooch had been more aggressive. (Yes, you read that right.) He was isolated 1-v-1 with a Zenit player attacking down the left wing (Gooch's right). He just kept backing up and backing up until the Zenit player was deep into the penalty area (but at a relatively tough angle), at which point he took a shot. Gooch tried to block it, but it passed by him and past the keeper.

It's 2-0 now. Just turned on the feed, so I have no idea how they got the second goal.
Gooch probably at fault, though... ;)
Edit: oops, didn't know Gooch actually was involved in the goal...ouch.

Gooch header off of a freekick inches high of the crossbar.

In Gooch's defense, it was expertly played by the Zenit player - he kept very close control of the ball while moving at a fast pace. If Onyewu had tried to tackle the ball away from him, he would have risked picking up a second yellow and being sent off.

Zenit: perestroika
Standard: glasn0st
I blame Putin.
The sad thing is that Standard could have tied it when it was 1-0, there was a goal-line clearance by a Zenit defender early in the second half. He was chasing the ball, which seemed destined for the back of the net, but managed to clear it at the last moment.

C'mon now - did John Wayne give up when he was trailing at the Alamo?
Standard will need an epic return match to get through, they were missing Jovanovic their best scorer tonight but they might need a lot more than that for the home game.

The other round faced Dutchman (Dickie Avocaat - last I knew anyway. Could have changed.)

Dickie's last season in charge of Zenit before going off to coach Australia.
Though, if he wins the Russian championship, Gazprom may tempt him for an encore.
