Looking at the United pre game notes on DCUnited.com, I noticed this little nugget..

For the next few road matches, United will not be wearing their all-white road kits.. Instead they will be wearing their white tops with black shorts and black socks..

Interesting..

I really don't know why their doing this but it should look interesting....

Why not add wingtips and complete the whole tourist look.

Don't forget the bowties and/or cummerbunds.

I'd like to see them all streak their hair red, or at least feather it...

Perhaps this is being done so Etcheverry looks slimmer?

I love it. Looks like the German kit.

I think its a good idea actually. I've always like it when teams do this, although, you don't see it in MLS very much.

My guess is that it has something to do with the heat.

Maybe it's because Chicago is wearing white shorts?

They mentioned on the telecast that they'll be wearing their "alernate kit" Saturday. Perhaps they found a loophole that'll let them wear the white jersey in the daytime heat?

They looked good out there, but more importantly they won.

Gotta keep them for next week (and if DC United wins then for the week after!).

No loopholes really, it's a matter of choice from the home team..

I actually like the color contrast. It looked good....

I liked it too. I was getting tired of seeing white shirt/white shorts/white socks on every road team in MLS.

Dare to be different.

No, I don't think MLS teams can pick the jersey they wear at home, unless they have an alternate. The old way was the home team picked, but a couple of years ago they switched to Home, Away, and Alternate kits. I think you can only choose Home and Alt at home, and Away and Alt on the road. By combining the two standard kits into an "alternate kit", United comes up with a lighter jersey to wear at home.

I'm glad you posted this...for the entire game tonight, I kept thinking "Have I not been paying attention? Has THIS been their away kit all season?"
Thought I was losing it. The memory, that is. The sanity, well, being a DCU fan has taken care of that.

I preferred the black shorts they wore today/yesterday, but either is fine by me. As long as they wear the black kit at home I'm happy. In fact, I'd kinda like it if they wore it on the road too. No, it's certainly not going to provide any competitive advantage in this heat, but it does look seriously cool :D
