:D
Yea, I said it!
Which do you prefer.. and why?
I've always said that if a domestic cat were bigger... say, a lion's size.. it'd kill you, lol.. I love cats for that.. they befriend humans to eat... lol..agree? I'm sure cat owners will say that their beloved cat would never harm them.. purring and cute as it is, right?
I also like dogs, but think they're a bit thick, well at least half of them.. except dobermans who I've come across a few times and liked their indifference toward me, lol. Dogs that like you are exceptionally loyal.. I don't think they'd harm you even if they were elephantesque..
I like both animals, tbh. But cats do make me laugh with their disdain and arrogance.
Discuss... lol, no, I'm not nuts, honest. :D
I've meant to start this thread for the last year.. and thought against it at the last moment.... but what the hey..
vote, talk or ignore??

For me, the preference is clear: cats.
Cats are self-sufficient and independent. It is a fact that cats are more intelligent than dogs, as if proof is needed after watching each. Cats are in it for themselves and if it doesn't benefit them, then they aren't interested. Dogs crave attention and approval. Cats live with co-habitants. Dogs live with owners (pack leaders).
The only thing that dogs may be better than cats for is getting chicks. However, I would not want any chick that was into me because of my dog. A dog is a deal-breaker no matter how attractive the woman. (I think I'd accept smoking cigarettes first, and I detest cigarette smoke.)
I can't think of any reason to have a smelly, insecure and needy animal in my life. My wife says one is enough.

That is fantastically put! Co-habitants! hehe, so true about if there is no gain for them they aren't interested. I really like that about cats, it makes me laugh. You can almost see it in their eyes: "Stupid human, get me my food and empty my litter box." :D

Are you saying you don't actually like dogs at all then?

Had both as a kid and the cat hated me so I hate cats.
If walking around in my socks it would run after me and scratch my heels/back of my ankles for some reason. Not sure if they looked like mice to it or what, never did it to anyone else though.
Sometimes I'd hear it coming and stop completely still which usually worked or turn around and yell/scream/growl at it just as it was approaching which also did the trick.
It had a couple of quirky habits which were quite fun as it seemed to have some bizarre fetish for tobacco and mints. It would lick ashtrays and rub it's head against them, the same if anyone had a packet of mints.
Still, dogs for me.

I feel about dogs they way I feel about people who like "Grey's Anatomy": I assume that I don't like them and its up to them to change my mind.

Got to be dogs.
Yes their thick when compared to cats, but at least they understand the chain of command. The last cat we owned was an evil git, it's favourite hobbies included jumping on me and digging its claws in when I was asleep, and pissing on my pillow when I wasn't around. My ancestors took hundreds of thousands of years getting me to the top of the food chain, and I expect my pets to respect that.

Haha! A Tobacco loving-ashtray licking cat! Classic.
I've never been attacked by a cat..given them enough reason to over the years, but never had one scratch or bite me. My Granma's cat was hilarious, I used to play finger-boxing with it, and it'd dodge finger-jabs etc and hit back with counters. I used to call it Sugar Ray. It never once bit or scratche me when I was doing that.. my dad did it just the once and it scratched his finger with a multi claw assault which I found absolutely hilarious. Especially my dad's yelp as he felt the outburst. Cat's are selective.. :D

lol, I like intelligent dogs, they impress me a great deal. Not so keen on the dumb ones, though.

LOL. Would you have preferred it to take a long relaxing pee in your presence? That'd be even more of an insult!

I get the impression that cats like women better more than men. I have always had cats in the household and I presently have two (male and female-siblings). The myth that dogs and cats do not get on is wrong in my case as my female cat loves our dogs A LOT and the dogs have to suffer being sat on, licked and pestered.Cats are little buggers though as my female one today chased a rat and while it was still alive played football with it rather than immediately killing it:eek:and I recently rescued a baby bird from its mouth but it died later. I do not like dogs (rather than my own) as I have been bitten and I am wary of them. The only thinhg about dogs is that they have more loyalty and are less independent than the average cat who spend more time in your garden than in your house.

You sure you did not insult it?:D
Mine, when she thinks it is cold outside, comes into my bed and watches TV and is very comfortable.

Forget the insult, at least I could have changed the pillow. Imagine going for a lie down after a tiring day only to.......well I won't go into detail (I'm still mentally scarred). The worst thing is it never marked it's territory on my girlfriends side, so either it hated me or she kept changing the pillows around....hmmmm.

We have 3 cats.
Dogs smell and the passing of the poop-scoop bags laws really put cats over the top very easily....

Cats present half dead creatures to you as a show of affection. It's really bad if your cat is a good mouser or hunter. My Gran's cat would bring 'presents' of half dead animals into the house every week. She once even brought a rabbit into the house, wtf? It must have been one that escaped its hutch, unfortunately.
The funniest thing that cat ever did was try and pounce on a crow. The crow was massive and turned around and chased the cat back into the house. As cats do, it acted as if 'it ain't nothin' and just strolls past us into her basket. :D

Haha! Yuck!
Couldn't you smell it?
Finding out that your cat claims your pillow as territory is hilarious.

I'm sensing a certain amount of animosity towards dogs from the cat owners. Is this right?
My Gf is allergic to cats, so we can't have one. And a dog needs walks and attention so can't get one of those either. She hates cats.. they seem to hate her as well.

Maybe, although at a couple of girlfriend's houses where it's been a female only household, the cats seemed to love me.

Got to agree there, the ones I had got on really well except for when the dog would sniff the cat's backside which the cat obviously took offence to. It would result in the cat spinning round and scratching the dog's nose, the dog yelping and then running away. :D

The dog has to have grown up around the cat. Had one dog maul a cat to death in my garden once. I was woke up by the commotion and saw it kill it. :(
I've noticed that cats tend to boss those cat-dog relationships, though.

The cat is the boss. Definately
On your first point of your post is sadly true although some bastards pulled the cat down the tree for the dog to get it-our cat:mad:only about 8 years old at the time. Although once while walking to school I saw a cat run over by a lorry unfortunately.
My cat has tried to get these but with little luck and she does eye the rabbits in their hutches.

We're lucky as far as marking with our cats as they are both indoor cats and are fixed. The male sometimes uses locations other than the box, but (so far) he has not used furniture. Our cats don't pounce us or other humans at all, although they do pounce each other. (The male cat cries like a baby when the female gets the drop on him. Of course he believes that he can pounce her whenever he wants.)
The only real issue with our cats is that their day begins around 4:30 and they'd like our day to begin at that time also. At this point they are too old (15 and 16) to change. We use a noise machine to drown out their breakfast requests.

It's difficult to call for me. I had bad experiences with both as my family owned both at one time in my life. Cats are more adorable but they are pretentious and that rubs me the wrong way since man is clearly the superior being. What do they have to be so stuck up about?
If either is friendly, I'd probably choose the dog since it's more of a companion to play with. A big dog can also protect you. I never had respect for smaller dogs (seems like every girl I know has one of those small button-eyed ones that has a very annoying kick-inducing bark).
