D.C. United acquires Jerson Monteiro from Chicago Fire

Monteiro a former first round MLS SuperDraft pick

Washington, D.C. (September 14, 2007) - D.C. United announced today the club has acquired Jerson Monteiro from the Chicago Fire in exchange for a conditional 2008 MLS SuperDraft pick. United’s roster included an open developmental spot for the 22-year old. The trade comes the day of the League’s trade deadline and roster freeze.

“We are pleased to acquire a young striker, who we believe has the potential to flourish in our environment,” said United Technical Director Dave Kasper.

Monteiro was originally selected by the Fire in the first round of the 2007 MLS SuperDraft as the eighth overall selection. The Angolan native received his green card earlier this year and thus will count as a domestic player on United’s roster.

This year, Monteiro has seen time in five League matches (one start), notching a goal in 154 minutes on the pitch. His lone goal came against D.C., when United topped Chicago 3-1 on June 16 at RFK Stadium. The forward has seen time in three Reserve Division matches (two starts) with the Fire, totaling 235 minutes.

A four-year starter at the University of Alabama-Birmingham, Monteiro was a three-time All-Conference USA player with the Blazers, named to the First Team in 2006 and Third Team in 2003 and 2005. Monteiro notched 34 goals and 16 assists in 77 collegiate appearances (74 starts). He was UAB’s leading scorer during his freshman (eight goals, three assists), sophomore (seven goals, three assists) and senior (14 goals, seven assists). He was the second leading scorer on the team during his junior year, notching five goals.

All of you who wanted another forward, here you go. Unproven, but got about the best we could get for the price. Maybe another Burch/Perkins/Boswell etc in the cards?

That'd be nice.... does anyone have acess to the highlights from the Chicago game in June. I for the life of me can't remember the goal this kid scored...

I'm going to say right now (even though I haven't seen him) that he's the best forward we've got. Why he's sitting on the bench, I can't fathom.

Here's a picture of Morterio. This could be a future forward for when Jamie leaves.

No idea whether he's good, or whether he'll do well here. The price can't be beat, however.

You're crazy. This guy is the 3rd worst Brazilian ever! Which is probably why he had to take out Angolan citizenship.

I remember when he scored against us for Chicago in that game back in June but don't remember much except it was at La Norte's end and I was wondering who scored it (Chicago had a very weak lineup that day and Willian Oliveira also came on as a halftime sub). No MLSnet highlights are available for that game for some reason.

MLSnet match report by Charles Boehm says

But just when the Black-and-Red seemed assured of an easy stroll in the park, Chicago pulled one back as Monteiro ran onto a through ball played into space along the right channel and surprised Perkins with a quick shot from the edge of the penalty box. United's 'keeper was a step slow to react to the effort, but it was nonetheless supremely well-placed, cutting across Perkins' path and nestling in the far inside netting to cut the margin to 3-1.

As a Fire fan, I really don't understand this trade.

Do you mean you don't know why the Fire would make the trade?

If he was talented enough to get taken in the first round of this year's draft and we're only giving up a conditional pick to get him, he is worth taking a flier on.

Exactly. We have 1.5 good forwards, and he's young. I can only hope that it means Osario has some young stud from Colombia on the way.

Montiero looked good from what we've seen.

Jaime and Christian STILL won't pass him the ball after all these seconds.

Perhaps it was a chemistry thing, or (bad for us) a workrate thing. One never knows.

He's listed at 6', 170. That's way to tall for DC United.
