No Olsen, No Gomez, No Fred.

Here's my thought:

----------Perkins
Namoff--Boswell--McTavish--Burch

----------Simms

??------Moreno----Gros

----Kpene-----Emilio

Do we put someone like Mediate or DeRoux (are they still with the team?) out on the wing, or slide Carroll over?

I like the idea of putting Moreno in the Gomez role. With Simms behind him, he can have the freedom to create.

One of the best games Dyachenko has ever played for DC was in New England playing in the Gomez role, so it wouldn't shock me to see him play there (with Moreno obviously moving up top). His size will help him against some of the hacks who play for Chicago.

As for out right, Moose was seeing some time out there earlier this season and we know Mediate can play there. I think it will be whomever is looking best at practice.

Is Moose fit? If he is, I would like to see him ou there. He has shown he can produce on the flanks. As much as it scares me to see this squad without Olsen, Gomez, and Fred available; it will be exciting to see who can step up and hold their own.

There's this:

----------Perkins
Namoff--Boswell--Vanney--Burch

------Simms---B. Carroll

Mediate----------------Gros

----Emilio-----Moreno

Subs: McTavish, Kpene, Dyachenko, Moose, Addlery, and Nolly.

Soehn's rolled out this dual d-mid formation a couple of times (most recently the second half against Salt Lake).

Alternatively, there's this:

----------Perkins
Namoff--Boswell--Vanney--Burch

------------Simms-

Mediate----Dyachenko-------Gros

----Emilio-----Moreno

What has he produced? So far as I can tell, he brings in energy and speed, but I don't recall him helping to decide a match in our favor. I think Mediate is a better option since he's a calmer player and a better defender.

Agree completely.

Yes, me too. Remember the 1999 late season game at LA, the game we won 2-0? The game that DC did not play Marco, Jamie, Benny, Sanneh, Goos, Wee One, and Llamosa? The game that had this as the starting lineup:

----------------Presthus
Sonora----Pope--Talley----Peay
---------------Aunger
-J Moore-------------------Maessner
---------------Otero
--------Albright---------Wood

subs: Simpson 46', Lassiter 46' (for Mess), Agoos 46' (for Sonora), Judah Cooks 88' (Moore)

As I recall, the team was in a fight for the SS that year with LA, but was about to play the CCC in Las Vegas and so Rongen rested his main guys. LA didn't and it was their big chance to make a move.

United won 2-0. Goals by Wood (17') and Peay! (56'). It was laughable how we dominated this game. It was our 12th consecutive win (though that includes shootout wins so that's a dubious mark IMO.)

United then went on to smell up Vegas and then win the MLS Cup.

Of course the circumstances were different back then. Rongen had the choice to rest his regulars and start his yannigans (and it was a ballsy move on his part to start this group against the 2nd best team in the league). Soehn today of course doesn't have a choice about Benny, Christian, and Fred.

---------------

I like the various lineups posted. Seems like the choices Soehn has to make are:

1) Start Carroll on the wing w/ Simms @ d-mid or start Mediate on the wing?

2) Start Moreno @ forward (benching Kpene) or @ a-mid (benching Dyachenko)?

EDIT: Here's a link to the game recap back in 99:

Like I said in a recent post somewhere... can't recall where...

---------------Perkins--------------
Namoff----McTavish--Vanney--Burch
---------------Simms--------------
Mediate------Dyachenko-------Gros
---------Emilio--------Moreno-------

I don't want Carrol getting a start anywhere other than leftbench. With the exception of that one run and solid cross, he's been dreadful all year.

-----------Emilio ------------ Kpene -----------

-----------------Dyachenko --------------------

---Gros ----------------------------Mediate/Moose/DeRoux

-------------------Carroll ----------------------

Burch -----Boswell -------McTavish -----Namoff ----

Why start Carroll? Because i may as well have the starting dmid for the Chivas game fresh. Why not start Vanney? Same reason why I'm starting Carroll. Why not start Moreno? See above. All of those players are available to be subbed in anyway, should we start off looking shaky, which is possible. Plus, there are 2 more games right after this one.

I'd throw this out there:

Perkins
Namoff Boswell Vanney Burch
Simms
Carroll Gros
Dyachenko
Moreno Emilio

Without Gomez, Olsen, and Fred we're just not going to have the same elegance and danger out of the midfield. This group will let us hold the ball the best we can and try and find Emilio in dangerous places.Carroll acquitted himself fine out wide at Toronto, and as his run against New England showed, he offers as much going forward as anyone else we can put in this spot (Mediate, Moose, DeRoux).

On the road against a motivated Chicago I prefer Vanney's experience and ability or organize to MacTavish's athleticism.

And finally, Dyachenko starts not because he's so much better than Kpene (he's not), but that, per my unscientific and entirely anecdotal viewing experience, Emilio is a better player when he's playing alongside Moreno. He's not as comfortable playing with Kpene, and considering that the level of service he's going to receive likely is going to be below the level to which he is accustomed, we want a happy Emilio and hope that he can finish one of the handful of half chances he might see.

Off the bench our options would be Nolly, MacTavish, Mediate, Kpene, and either Moose (if healthy) or J. Carroll.

I wonder if this isn't a good opportunity to bend then push in the second half.

With that in mind, how about a lineup that looks like this:

4 backs (pick between McT and Vanney based on fitness, practice)
2 dmids -- Carroll and Simms
3 mids, with Rod in the center, Gros and Mediate/Moose
Emilio up top

Work for the counter in the first half, then bring on Jaime for Carroll (up top if we need to score) or Rod (if by chance we're up to kill off the game), Moose/Mediate/deRoux for another sub, and run at Chicago in the second half with fresher legs.

Given the number of players out, this might give us the best chance to absorb pressure and come out with at least a point.

I don't see why so many are pushing for Boz to start, he's been a liability on the field lately.

I'd also definitely rather have Simms taking on Blanco than Carrol.

I could go either way up top (Moreno vs Kpene/Addlery/Mupier) I see the smarts in resting Moreno, but no reason to rest Simms or Vanney.

We play TFC at home after Chivas, that's the match to rest guys like Simms and Vanney. These guys are pros, they can handle playing all out in 2 matches in 4 days after 10 days of rest. Resting Simms and Vanney against TFC will give them an extra few days rest prior to the away leg with Chivas.

Jazz hands and RFK don't mix -- especially the dance couple during the pregame ceremony before the US-Scotland friendly in 1998.

The usual 4-4-2

--------- Perkins ---------

Namoff -- Boz -- Vanney -- Burch

Carroll -- Simms -- Dyachenko -- Gros

-------- Emilio ---- Moreno --------

Nice and easy. Let's remember that Brian Carroll did get a start as an outside midfielder a few weeks ago and did quite well.

I'm just sayin'....

I'm just saying Carrol is garbage and shouldn't start.
I also still don't get why Boz is getting everyone's spot of McTavish, who has played MUCH better than Boz thus far.

Lately, Boswell has recovered, so has Carroll, to an extent.

This is what I'd go with. the only real question mark is maybe McTavish for Boswell, but I'm fine with either in there.

I think the fact that you can say that is one of Soehn's achievements for this year. Ditto for depth developed in other spots.

What's amazing about this lineup is that 9 of the 10 field players would start for at least half the teams in the league, and even Dyachenko would start for several. Add in Gomez, Fred and Olsen, and that's 12 players for 10 spots.
