Be proud of the effort. If you guys had played like that on Friday, you would have kicked our asses.

However, I'm sorry man, but Real was clearly the better side. :o

That might not be the case once you guys get Frings, Borowski and Alberto back.

Merte, Diego, Sanogo, Naldo and Tosic were outstanding. Not to mention Wiese.

It was a really exciting match. Looking forward to the return leg. :)

It was a good performance! Currently we can't expect much more from our team. Maybe with a little bit more luck it could have been a draw. But overall the win of Madrid was totally deserved. They are in top form and technically by far superior.
So now let's hope that Werder is slowly getting shape again. And then when Boro, Frings, Fritz, Wome and Carlos Alberto are back it will be a very hard game for Real in Bremen!

i agree they deserved the points.....i actually think it is better that we lost this trip, so that when our boys are healthy.....they wont know what hit em in Germany!!

You guys played a lot better than expected. A lot of people, like TOLH here, expected Madrid to win by a large margin. The team can only improve as the key players come back into the team.

Mertesacker is the man!

Tosic was impressive, which I didnt expect.

Very classy response from the Werder fans on this board. Whilst I agree that we just edged it; I can't stress enough that we just edged it. We may have had the lions share of possesion, which is expected from the home team in the Champions League, Werder did look very threatening on the counter attack. No disrespect to Lazio or Olympiakos but if Werder perform like this in the remaining 5 fixtures then I think it's fair to say that we are debating about how will finnish 1st and 2nd. Good and enjoyable game!

More than i expected before the match.
Could have been even more with a bit more of luck,
but the result is ok and Real a deserved winner.

Diego, Wiese and Mertesacker impressed me
the most from us, at Real it was Raul.

Couldn't have said it better.

Firstly I have to say that especially after watching the porto-liverpool rubbish, this match was a technical dream.

And the bernabeau pitch looked great, werder's uniform was a rich green and real's looked really nice in all white.

Even in the first half when Real had much more possession, each pass and each intercept by bremen was clean, and then bremen's attacks were also..well..typical bremen. Poetic.

Real were as well, although their possession did not equate to the equivalent amount of goal chances.

In the 2nd half, possession was much more even, but madrid did this time did create the better chances, but werder were not far behind, with skilful touches and movement by both sides, as well as clean defending.

On the Bremen side, Mertesacker was outstanding as usual. I think he had Van Nistelrooy and Raul psyched out near the end actually. VN was taking touches expecting Mertesacker to be there ahead of him and in the process mucked up a couple of chances.

I love how Bremen pass the ball out of defence instead of hacking it.

Diego is still one of THE most visionary players I have ever seen who shows delightful skill and passes.

Does anyone have that pass he made to sanogo in the 51st minute??? Outside of his foot first time into the box on the volley. And his juggling runs twice at full speed. All of his touches are so tight and he knows what to do next before he gets the ball.

It's safe to say that IF bremen play like this in their next 5 games, 15 points are not out of the question. The "IF" should become a smaller "if" when Frings etc etc etc come back.

i'm so glad bremen played much better than i expected them to. i thought they played good and made some dangerous moves. man, i can't get enough of diego! him and mertesacker were amazing. wiese made some outstanding saves, and i was also happy with tosic. i am, however, a little annoyed that we could have stolen a point off that game, but real madrid did deserve the win. they were excellent today. i thought raul and casillas were great. but yeah, hopefully bremen will continue to improve and we'll see a much much better werder bremen side when the two teams meet again in germany :)

More than i expected before the match.

Of course ... however, a draw was definitely possible if your defence wasn't so green! How can such a top striker like Van Nistelrooy be unmarked for 3 times within 5 minutes? You were lucky that he missed the first 2 opportunities, but it was to be expected (maybe except for your defenders) that he wouldn't miss the 3rd one...

Nevertheless, congrats on this solid performance at Bernabeu!

PS: I've seen the game on conference transmission in the Nürnberg "Shamrock" pub ... and was really surprised to see a group of young guys & girls with Werder tops & scarfs enter the room! ;) How I was told later on, they were a school class from Bremen being on a cultural Nürnberg trip.

I agree with you, that such mistakes shouldn´t take place in CL matches,
but in comparison to our matches before we clearly had less ones yesterday.*
The problems at such world class teams is, that you don´t have to take care
only of one world class players, but of a lot of them.
There are not many teams in the world, that don´t concede goals
against Real in an important CL match for them.
Remember last season Bayern conceded 3 there and this summer Real
improved their squad with 76.7 million EUR (bought players for 118 million EUR,
sold for 41 million EUR), in comparison Bayern improved their squad with
31 million EUR and Werder did with 5.3 million EUR.
So normally it´s a complete different world, but it is good to see,
that on the pitch the result was close.

Nevertheless, congrats on this solid performance at Bernabeu!

Yes, that´s also what i take from this match.
The result sets us under pressure in the next CL matches,
but it is no surprise and how the team played
should improve the team spirit and the self-confidence.
Although the next matches are complete different stories.

Cool story, iid the same with some friends in Prague some years ago. :)

*btw:
Additional to it, the pitch is Madrid is bigger than most BL pitches
(in BL there it is normally about 105*68 metres,
but the pitches can devide between 45 and 90 metres in width)
wikipedia: football pitch (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Football_pitch_metric.svg)
and so offensive playing side have advantages there, because the players have more space.
And creative players from both sides can profit from it, while defensive players have a hard day.

so, no one has the pass of the season from diego after 51 mins?

i think know which bit you're talking about. the one after bremen's corner kick, and when he made the pass you could hear the whole stadium go "WOW". you could tell how impressed they were, it was neat. unfortunately i can't find it anywhere, all the highlights on youtube show more real madrid's highlights than bremen's. it would be nice to see it again though.

could you make out the crowd gasping?

Also the bit where he put it over ramos, and juggled it perfectly at full speed past him then metzelder brought him down before he got skinned

He had so many good touches, twists and turns all game. Such a good player.

For a period it looked like he would put on a show for the madrid crowd. Except from the wrong team ;)
