So - I was discussing this last night and was surprised to find out Emilio is now top 10 in MLS HISTORY for goals in a single season. Right now he is tied for 8the with Cobi "tiny penis" Jones and Alex Pineda Chacon. Also, found it interesting there has not been a 20 goal scorer in MLS since 2002

Here is the top 10:

Lassiter - 27
John - 26
Diallo - 26
Ruiz - 24
Twellman - 23
RDA - 23 (DC record holder)
Hurtado - 21
Emilio - 19
Jones - 19
Chacon - 19

As far as I'm concerned, Luciano is the best forward we've ever had. Yes, that's considering Lassiter, Diaz-Arce, Moreno, Esky, Ali Curtis, Albright, AJ Wood, Sneaky Pete, Rammell, et al.

Considering how much better MLS defenses are now than they were in 2002 and before - and also considering that we really are very poor on corners, an area in which Emilio should specialize - I think Luciano is having as good a season as any MLS forward has ever had.

Some people like to see PKs removed so here is that list:

John - 25 (pretty sure this is right - MLS stats in '98 were weird)
Diallo - 25
Lassiter - 24
Ruiz - 24
Twellman - 20
RDA - 19 (DC co-record holder)
Hurtado - 19
Emilio - 19

Interesting that only Emilio and Ruiz acheived their place on this list without taking a single PK.

Does this include playoffs or not? I don't think we will see a new record unless playoffs count, then I could see him reaching 28-30

Striker, OK. Forward, no. Jaime is a superior forward. He contributes many things to the attack that Emilio does not.

No - just regular season.

No - just regular season.

Thanks.

I see him probably with 5 or 6 more goals

A group of us looked at this yesterday. If you look at single season (all competitions) the DC record is 24. That is RDA 23 plus a single US Open Cup goal. Emilio is at 23 right now -- 19 MLS plus 4 in Cup compeitions.

I believe the DC record in all competitions is 29 - RDA had five goals in the play-offs that year.

In '96, RDA bagged 30 in United's 41 team games:

23 goals in 32 league matches (he only played 28).
1 goal in 3 Open Cup matches.
6 goals in 6 MLS playoff matches.

In '07, Emilio has bagged 23 in United's 34 team games:

19 goals in 25 league matches (he's only played in 24).
0 goals in 1 Open Cup match.
4 goals in 8 international matches.

There are at least 9 matches left.

5 league; at least 2 international; at least 2 MLS playoffs. He could tie RDA by scoring seven in seven (if he plays them all, or doesn't, and doubles up somewhere).

--

Of note, with Tampa Bay in '96; Roy Lassiter scored 34 goals in 38 team games:

27 goals in 32 league matches (he missed two).
1 goal in 1 Open Cup match.
6 goals in 5 MLS Cup playoff matches.

--

Clearly, I think though, there is no comparison between the defenses at work in 1996 and the ones we see today.

Are you saying the feared Said Fazlagic and Thor Lee would not be starters on every single team in the league this year? Sir, I think you are plain ass crazy ;)

Agreed.

Imagine this line up, with all the players in their prime:

----Emilio----Jaime
-------Etchverry
---Harkes---Williams

So basically just stick Emilio into the 1997 team :)

Yeah, he would have scored a few. RDA was no slouch, but Emilio would have scored a few :D

Greatest DC United striker ever, let's hope he stays with DC United for a long time.

MLS: Top 100 Single Season Goal Totals (1996-2006) (http://usasoccer.blogspot.com/2007/02/mls-top-100-single-season-goal-totals.html)

In addition, Emilio's 23 goals in all competitions is the 11th highest total. Carlos Ruiz holds the record with 35 in 36 games in 2002.
