"Across the Universe" or End of the Universe?

My wife and I had a joint "What the hell?" moment the other night upon seeing a commercial for the new Julie Taymor directed Beatles montage-o-rama "Across the Universe."

Then I saw there was an article on the film in the NY Times (http://www.nytimes.com/2007/09/09/movies/moviesspecial/09Gold.html) lying on my dining room table, which I scanned.

But of course nothing really compares to this: a clip of "I Want You" that seems to be a cross between Cop Rock, Hair, an OK Go video and Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation.

Cirque du Soleil should either sue for the theft of their theft of intellectual property or be jailed for encouraging this.

Oh, and Bono's in it. So, you know, it won't be over the top.


There seems to be quite a few clips from this on YouTube which I can't bear to watch at the moment, but feel free to terrorize this forum with them.

I was wondering when this was gonig to come out. The trailer has been playing on HDNet's trailer show, and it looked brilliant.

I guess I just figured that it was already released and got no buzz.

My wife read the NYT article and told me that the lead characters are Lucy and Jude. That alone makes it sound nauseating.

With that said, it's got Julie Taymor directing and an Eddie Izzard cameo, so you never know. I will withhold judgment until the reviews come out. I mean, it can't be as bad as the Bee Gees & Frampton in the Sgt. Pepper movie, can it? Can it?

The consensus on Rotten Tomatoes (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/across_the_universe/) is straight-down-the-middle -- some love it, some hate it. Very little is middling. So, you either buy into the premise or you don't.

The Times review by A.O. Scott was a total rave.

I read your post without seeing who you were quoting, so for a second there I honestly thought you were talking about David Angell, and I was like, "Wait a second, that guy's dead, how could he be talking about this movie?"

I've had nothing but negative reactions to the previews. I've made it through some pretty weird/dumb/bad movies with a smile on my face but this film doesn't strike me as anything but pretentious and showy, like the film is screaming, "Look at me, I'm Art with a capital 'a'! Watching me will make you hip and cool and better than those philistine friends of yours who don't like me!"

Of course, I could be wrong.

Every review I've read so far is the viewer will either love it or hate.

Ebert loved it.

From the previews I'm intrigued enough to see it in the theater.

It opened in limited release last weekend and per screen made a boat load.

Saw it last night. Very interesting from a visual and musical standpoint. The plot was completely generic. Some characters were extraneous. Not an [R] thread, so that's all I'll say. If you like Beatles music and don't mind non-Beatles performing it, worth seeing.
