Mine is Band of Brothers. What a great story (even if it's a little off the mark). Great acting and action.

Others I've liked:
Roots
North and South

Nothing will ever compare to Shogun. Nothing.

Very few motion pictures compare to Shogun.

Simply the best mini-series that will ever be made.

Have you seen Shogun?

I am old enough to have watched them both and can really honestly not understand how anyone that watched them both could possibly believe that.

Band of Brothers is easily up there near Shogun, but Shogun was just phenominal.

Of course to each his own, I suppose. I think we can all agree that there's Shogun, Band of Brothers and Roots as the top three and not a single other miniseries close to them.

Of course, I do have a hard time calling Band of Brothers a mini-series in the first place. It was pretty much a full season of shows. But that's really just semantics.

And then again later (although its easily been 15 years since I've seen it).

It was good, but I thought Band of Brothers was better. Your points with regard to BOB are well-taken, though. Let's face it - it was made with HBO money, Tom Hanks as a producer, uncensored and without commercials. So, yeah, it definitely has some advantages that Shogun can't match.

So long as no one mentions those horribly boring Herman Wouk miniseries (The Winds of War, and War and Remembrance, I think).

EDIT: Good news, AFL. Shogun (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0000A2ZNX/104-1002129-2866317?v=glance) comes to DVD in September.

Also, I've never actually seen Rich Man, Poor Man. Is it worthy?

Oh, that's rockin', man. Thanks.

I never saw it either.

(Of course, I don't like to let petty details like not having seen something get in the way of tossing my opinions on a subject out there. :D )

You kids are insane.

Lonesome Dove. Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones are only the best in this series that had about 10 other great acting jobs.

The problem with Shogun, if memory serves, is that the lead character, whathisname, is just not very good.

Contrast that with the banter between Duvall and Jones, just the sitting around talking which was fantastic, and then add all the other performances.
Robert Duvall .......... Augustus "Gus" McCrae
Tommy Lee Jones ........ Woodrow F Call
Danny Glover ........... Joshua Deets
Robert Urich ........... Jake Spoon
Diane Lane ............. Lorena Wood
Frederic Forrest ....... Blue Duck
Rick Schroder .......... Newt Dobbs
D.B. Sweeney ........... Dish Boggett
Anjelica Huston ........ Clara Allen
Chris Cooper ........... July Johnson
Tim Scott .............. Pea Eye Parker
Barry Corbin ........... Roscoe Brown
William Sanderson ...... Lippy Jones
Barry Tubb ............. Jasper Fant
Glenne Headly .......... Elmira

The only thing I remember about North and South is when (random moment) Patrick Swayze started crying and this long string of snot came out. Anyone remember that?

Band of Brothers and Lonesome Dove are my favorites. Haven't seen Shogun.

I wish someone would make a miniseries or movie about the Negro Leagues (baseball).

Shogun.

From North and South - when that black dude asks Kirstie Alley, "You wants to "lay" with me?" :)

And from Shogun, when that Japanese dude pisses on Richard Chamberlain. :D
