I thought I had read this somewhere recently, but Wynalda and O'Brien went on for two or three minutes last night about rumors that Emilio is looking for a big-money transfer to another league during the offseason. That he scored two goals in the first 15 minutes "is adding to his stock" and Wynalda then mentioned that Emilio's history shows that he is not keen on staying in any one place for a long time.

Whad do other folks think? Is there any concrete basis to worry that we may lose Emilio after this very successful year? Doesn't DC have a multi-year contract with Emilio?

Emilio mentioned in some interview that he was looking at his options for playing in Europe in Dec. but as of yet there are no offers (official or rumor) from teams

How long is his contract with United?

I'd hate to have him leave the team but at least DC stand to make money on a transfer.

What the heck would they know about anything - These guys are just blowing out their ass - He may stay for another 3 to 6 years - He may go in the off-season -

But how old is he? - By know he's a bit long in the tooth for most European teams that would be worthwhile leaving for - Any decent 1st division team would want younger players - Is it really worth leaving here for a 2nd division Spanish or French team?

His mentioning leaving (or looking for other options) means 2 things.

1. He wants more money.
2. He wants more money.

I don't think he cares where it is. He is either trying to get a pay jump here or he wants to go somewhere else where they will pay him more money.

My gut says..

Probably

like solrac mentions, it's all about the Benjamins. If we're REALLY that interested in Veron to where we make him a DP, and Gomez decides to stick around (after a subpar for him) year, then financial decisions will have to be made. So far I like the mindset our FO has had. They won't sell out for the sake of selling out. This is really a case of trusting what KP will do keeping in mind what the team accomplishes the rest of the way.

Don't be so sure. It wouldn't be far fetched for an ambitious 2nd div. team or a mid to low-table 1st div. team somewhere looking for promotion and/or qualification to a tournament to shell out some for a proven scorer like Emilio on a one season deal. Once the goal is reached, new money buys bigger (and the aforementioned younger) talent.

As solrac said, at the moment I see this as jockeying for salary position come next season. He wants a raise

Well it's not unreasonable for him to want one of the highest salaries in the league. He's one of the best players and deserves to be paid like it. What I'm hoping is that MLS increases its cap as much as the rumors are saying. That would give us plenty of room to give him a big raise. We'd still be able to sign plenty of other talent as well and get a DP (or 2 if they change that rule as well).

I really think its stupid to have such a low cap! We want all these great players to come over and play in the MLS but yet we set these limits. The SI and only 2 DP.

I'm just concerned because both Emilio and Gomez are looking for much more money next year and I'm not sure we can keep them both. I hope so, though.

The salary cap is the only reason the league has survived.

The fact that we now have DPs at all means that the fiscal prudence of the early years was sensible.

If it comes down to a choice between Emilio and Gomez in the offseason, I think the decision is very, very simple:

Christian goes somewhere else.

If I'm not mistaken, standard MLS player contracts include multiple options at the league's discretion. This would indicate that next year's salary is set and that in order to "leave" he'd have to be sold. I would therefore assume that DCU management has complete control of this situation if it is like every other MLS player agreement.

Yep.

Story on signing (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/01/16/AR2007011601818.html).

Emilio, who turned 28 last month, signed a four-year contract that includes three team-held option years.

Better not be going anywhere anytime soon. I got my #11 Emilio jersey with the intention that it would be the only jersey I would need for a while.

Consider the source...... ESPN!!!! Emilio signed a 2 to 4 year deal with DC... The senerio ESPN mentioned fit Cristian Gomez than Emilio.... Gomez is the one who wants more money or he's out....

ESPN screws EVERYTHING up......

Contracts mean basically nothing. They can be bought out, or the parties can mutually agree to terminate them. If Emilio desperately wanted to leave and DC played hardball and kept him here, how effective would he be on the field? The team would be better off working out some arrangement to let a disgruntled player go than to have him sulk on the field and in the locker room.

He wouldn't really be helping his future contract talks if he sulked around and put in a weak effort when he wasn't perfectly happy.

I definitely agree with this.
