Steven Taylor Rejects Newcastle Contract Offer (http://nufcblog.com/steven-taylor-rejects-newcastle-contract-offer/)
Taylor will be aware how much United have come up with for James Milner and Charles N’Zogbia, who had their contracts reviewed and signed new deals at St James’ Park in the past couple of weeks. The fans were extremely pleased that two of our best players, even though they are just 21 years-old were signed up long term by the club - very good business. With players who have yet to prove themselves at Newcastle, and some that couldn’t prove themselves at Newcastle, getting more than 3 to 6 times what Steven is currently earning, we cannot blame Steven for wanting a better contract. Although we don’t know the details we cannot believe it can be fair to Steven.

I'm not overly worried about this at this point in time. Tayls will get his contract, it will just take a while like it did for Milner and N'Zogbia.

Magpies' Taylor 'disappointed' at new contract offer (http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id=460993&cc=5901)
Having supported NUFC for over 12 years I can tell you I am definitely worried. Especially when I read this from the article:
"New signing Abdoulaye Faye has reportedly been handed a £30,000-a-week deal, with Taylor believed to be commanding less than a third of that."
All I can say is that if Steven Taylor ends up in a ManU, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, etc. jersey because this club tries to play hard asses in negotiations I will absolutely never forgive the likes of Allardyce, Mort and Ashley.

I am not worried, it will get done. Everyone is just posturing now. Everyone, including Mort and the front office, knows Taylor is a Geordie and wants to play for Newcastle. They offered him a low deal to see if his loyalty would make him take it, which he wouldn't. From Taylor's perspective, he realizes that the offer is too low because there is a perception that he would only be happy playing here, so by going to the press with his discomfort, he is letting the team know that he won't stand for being underpaid. Everyone should get the message, and then they'll sit down again in a bit and get it worked out. After coming up with decent deals for N'zogbia and Milner the team won't let its rising defensive star go.

Tayls offered fair deal (http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/nufc/newcastle-united-news/2007/09/14/tayls-offered-fair-deal-72703-19789934/)
NEWCASTLE UNITED boss Sam Allardyce has insisted he offered Steven Taylor a fair deal in the aftermath of the England Under-21 international’s contract snub.
Big Sam says he wants to keep the Toon defender on Tyneside – but will not be “sucked” in to paying over the odds for him.

Correct (http://icnewcastle.icnetwork.co.uk/newcastleunited/sundaysun/tm_headline=taylor-set-to-quit-if-dropped%26method=full%26objectid=19796322%26siteid=50081-name_page.html)
Now he's saying he'll quit. How stupid can you be Sam? I've supported you through everything, but letting Tayls go would be the worst decision you could ever make. and for some reason, I could see him being dropped, for no apparent reason, even though he's our best CB, and he's young, we'll decide to put in an old veteran.

It seems like Big Sam doesn't care about two players that haver really helped us for many seasons and the last 2. I can't believe that there is a chance we could see both Given and Taylor leave in January. That would be a very black day indeed for newcastle if that happens.

Just curious as to where you get the hint that Given may leave as well?
As for Taylor, as good as he is he is, and as much as he has contributed, well I'm sorry but he is not worth 30K/week...yet. IMO it be a shame to loose him, not quite a disaster but terrible in any case.
The whole thing stinks to high heaven of maneuvering and negotiating to get into the best position as possible, and unfortunately, when it comes to these contracts, its business, not personal.

Newcastle keeper Shay Given will seek talks with boss Sam Allardyce if he is does not play against Derby on Monday. (People)
And my belief that Shay will not play back up and will request a transfer if Sam hands over the starting position over to Harper. If your Given and your healthy, just got through playing twice for your country, and played a CC match, yet you've had to sit on the bench in EPL matches, after everything you've ment to the club, I'd have show down talks as well.

Taylor set to quit the club if dropped for the Derby match (http://icnewcastle.icnetwork.co.uk/newcastleunited/sundaysun/tm_headline=taylor-set-to-quit-if-dropped%26method=full%26objectid=19796322%26siteid=50081-name_page.html)
So much for loyalty, How about fighting for your place? Since when does a 20 year old and his dad call the shots at NUFC?

He's bluffing. It would be a poor career decision at this point to go to a 'Big Club' right now because he'd never break in to the team on a regular basis. He'd be a rotational squad player at most and what he needs it games. So he should suck it up and get a little rest after playing the qualis because we have three games in six days next week.

It's a stupid bluff. It shouldn't have been handled so publicly.

Don't mean to split hairs but as Tigerdave put it: "..he should suck it up and get a little rest after playing the qualis because we have three games in six days next week."
Given's coming off of several pretty severe groin strains not to mention the results of that collision with Harewood last season. I for one would not wish to risk his fitness for the TOON or for his country either for that matter against low rated opposition such as Derby in the next few days. Put him in against Arse, of ManUre, but rest him against Derby, Harper's good enough for that.
As for him leaving, that is speculation (from "The People" FFS!). As you quoted: "he will be seeking talks," maybe with the intent of leaving but most likely to let his feelings be known to Sam.
Its funny; before we were whinging about injuries and a lack of players in positions. Now that we have enough depth for most of our positions, we are faced with the problem of players who are whinging about lack of playing time and being entitled to play. Just because you have been here longest does not mean you are entitled to the position. That bus left a few weeks ago and apparently will be stopping in Leeds next.

He's certainly already worth more than Faye ever will be and this isn't even taking into consideration how good he can be in the future. When you have the possibility of having a great CB at the club for many years you should do your best to handle the situation well. IMO that is not being done. Does Sam really care about the future of Newcastle or is he looking to do the best in a short period and hope the England job comes open? We shall see. He's doing great with results so far and I have no complaints there.

I'll leave my response to the lads at True Faith who sum it up with a good perspective (http://www.true-faith.co.uk/html/tbawe.htm); and because they write it a helluva lot better than I do:
Let's put our cards on the table. We want Steven Taylor to stay at NUFC and to develop into a truly top class central defender. Taylor is strong, brave, he's good in the air and he has a decent touch. As befitting a 21-year-old defender who has come through the ranks at NUFC in a period when he has had no consistency in the coaching he has received and he has had no on field mentoring from experienced and talented defensive colleagues, Taylor has lots of gaps in his game. Indeed, there are occasions when had his ricks been made by anyone called Titus or Jean-Alain the loud sighs of SJP's tired impatience would have been directed at him. Taylor has got away with a lot because supporters have recognised his age, inexperience and we always especially want our own in the first team doing well and keep some kind of link between those of us in the stands and in the dressing room. Taylor, like Shola, being a local lad represents a chance of that continuing. Taylor has potential but there are big gaps in his game that he needs to work on before he can act the big time Charlie and make all kinds of demands from NUFC. ...
...and I'm done.

So you both think we should give Faye that kind of money but not Taylor? You see what is not handled well for me is bringing in a squad player on the kind of money he would like and then saying, no, you are not worth that much. Seems ridiculous to me but I guess you rate Faye way, way higher than I do. Or maybe you rate his importance to the team and future of Newcastle higher than Taylor?
Please don't say it has nothing to do with it either. It has everything to do with it. Imagine where you work if they brought in someone who does the same job as you at the same level or below and paid him a lot more. When you go to ask for the same pay they say you are being paid fairly. I don't think it would go over to well. Now if what has been said about Faye's wage is rubbish then I can see the other side being more sensible. That's my opinion.
I hope to never watch Taylor raise silverware with another club. However if I do I will definitely be ranting on here. ;)

If Taylor goes somewhere else simply for money, let him. He's playing a lot here and developing under a good coach. If I were remotely concerned about him going to a better club, then I'd be more thoughful about jumping on the 'pay the man to keep him here' bandwagon simply because of his potential. But seriously, where is he going to go that is a better fit for him than Newcastle? The only undeniably better clubs than Newcastle right now are Liverpool (not better than Carragher or Agger), Chelsea (not better than Terry, Carvalho and possibly even Alex), Man United (not better than Rio or Vidic) and perhaps Arsenal (not better than Toure or Gallas and Wenger would rather die than buy English anyway). Anything else is a lateral move at best and if it's just over money, I say screw him. We don't need mercenaries right now, we need guys who will die for the shirt. If Taylor is willing to put money before that then maybe his commitment top the club should already be in question.
