Just saw it tonight and I thought it was pretty good. The story line could have been a little bit better, it just didn't grab me like I thought it would. It was also weird watching a Bruckheimer movie where there was only a couple explosions. The fights scens were pretty good, but some of them went on a little too long and I think they could have cut about 20 minutes out of the movie. It was really long! I also thought there were too many "Wow.... I wasn't expecting to see you here, where did you come from?" scenes in the movie. I also wish they would havae explained why Sparrow was cursed as well. Was he always cursed or just recently cursed? Don't you think he would have noticed... but then again... Barbosa and the pirates didn't notice when the curse was lifted until they had been stabbed.
I'll give it a B-. I think they could do a lot better with a sequel which I'm sure they'll make. More money, more expectations, and more stars... should be good.

As a Bruckheimer film, I give it an automatic grade of F. Of course I won't need to see it.

It was very enjoyable and a good summer movie. I don't know if Johnny Depp was trying for a faux Marlon Brando ala Fletcher Christian, but the film was pretty much what I expected and more. Held my attention and makes me think that Pirates of the Carribean will be mobbed over the next few weeks and maybe months at Disney World. Also Kieira Knightly reminds me of a young Umma Thurmmond.

I think you missed it, they explained what happened. He wasn't cursed at first because Barbosa dropped him off on the island (the first time) and then his crew went on to find the gold which cursed them.
When he finally became cursed was when he was in the cave with Barbosa, he picked up one of the gold coins (it wasn't too obvious). Then after he is stabbed by Barbosa you see him playing with the coin between his skeleton fingers.

Overall, not a bad movie. Johnny Depp stole the show, though. It took me a minute, but after awhile, I realized that Depp's character was a lot like Keith Richards. Anybody else pick up on this?

He said he modeled the character after Keith Richards since he figured pirates were "the rock-stars of their day"

The movie would have been as bad as I thought had it not been for Johnny Depp's performance. He was great fun.

I liked it. Last 5 minutes were a little weak but overall a decent summer flick. Plus the "Bend it Like Beckham" chick was very "easy on the eyes" as the saying goes.
