While established Premier League clubs occupied the top three spots - Manchester United (£51m), Liverpool (£50m) and Tottenham Hotspur (£40m) - the fourth biggest spenders were new boys Sunderland, whose £35m included £9m for goalkeeper Craig Gordon from Scottish side Hearts.
On a net transfer basis - when sales of players were also taken into account - spending by Premier League sides reached £420m during the 2007 January and summer transfer windows, up from £140m in 2006.
That's $42 million per team. WOW. That's a lot.

It is a lot. In Spain I think Barca spent $100 million and Real Madrid spent $160 million.

I just wanted to know if the amount mentioned includes only the buys by the club or the money spent on the buys after sales of players ?

The figures most media outlets are bandying about are gross of income from player sales. Liverpool's net expenditure, for instance, is about half of the figure listed at the top of this thread.

what really surprised me, was the cost of some of the Championship players. Some of them were 5-10 mil pounds. Seems like the clubs were not getting good value for their $$. I think they could have gotten better players for cheaper from the continent. Eastern Europe is a great source of relatively cheap and quality players.
Poland, Czech Republic, Russia, Croatia, Romania, all have pretty good leagues with some good players.

The $840 mil figure is the net transfer spending.
(Money coming in from transfer MINUS money coming out from transfer)

New owners and a massive television broadcasting deal have helped English football clubs spend more than £530m on players this summer, a survey says.
The study, by Deloitte Sports Group, shows the spending was about two-thirds higher than the £330m of summer 2006.
Of the money spent by top-flight clubs, about £110m went to lower-league sides while some £265m went outside England.

That is true.
Manchester United (£51m), Liverpool (£50m) and Tottenham Hotspur (£40m)
That is only the IN part. The BBC didn't mention the OUT part. [IN - OUT = net]
For example: Real Madrid spent (bought) 116 mil Euros. But they also sold for 30 mil Euros. The net transfer spending is 86 mil Euros.

IN
Pepe (€30M transfer from F.C. Porto)
Arjen Robben (€36M transfer from Chelsea F.C)
Royston Drenthe (€13M transfer from Feyenoord Rotterdam)
Wesley Sneijder (€27M transfer from Ajax Amsterdam)
Gabriel Heinze (€10M transfer from Manchester United)
OUT
8 MF Emerson (€5M transfer to AC Milan)
11 DF Cicinho (€11M transfer to A.S. Roma)
13 GK Diego López (€6M transfer to Villarreal)
15 DF Raúl Bravo (€2,3M transfer to Olympiacos)
24 DF Álvaro Mejía (€2M transfer to Real Murcia)
— DF Carlos Diogo (€6M transfer to Zaragoza)
Net transfer: 86 mil euro
So that net transfer spending for Real Madrid is around $120 million just for summer 2007. But for the Premiership, it is $840 million (summer and january). That's $840/20 teams = $42 million on average.

Yeah, and a flat average is almost wholly irrelevant. I know you have a bit of a fetish for this sort of stuff, so perhaps the mode figure would be more useful to you.

The net amount for summer and jan 2007 spending is $840 mil.
That works out to be £20 million net spending per team. I can't see that.

420 / 20 teams = 21 million pounds in net spending per team to be exact.

Yes, but as has already been said: a flat average is meaningless. Derby didn't spend half of that amount, United spent more than double it.
