Thought the European proceedings deserved their own thread. Today and the next two days will determine just what kind of hurdles Everton will have to clear to make an extended run through Europe.
According to the fine folks over at Toffeeweb, Everton is 35th in the UEFA Cup seedings at the moment. If six of these nine higher-seeded teams in these ties lose, Everton falls out of the 40 seeded positions:
Rangers (vs Red Star) currently 1-0 up
Benfica (vs Copenhagen) 2-1 up
Liverpool (vs Toulouse) 3-0 up
Werder Bremen (vs Dinamo Zagreb) 2-1 up
Besiktas (vs FC Zurich) 1-1
Shaktar Donetsk (vs FC Salsburg) 0-1 down
Valencia (vs IF Elfsborg) 3-0 up
Dinamo Kiev (vs FK Sarajevo) 1-0 up
Steau Bucharest (vs BATE Borisov) 2-2
Rangers and Liverpool are through to the group stages after today. If Valencia and one other club take care of business, that's that. There's also teams like Hamburg, Sampdoria and Galatasaray (also Blackburn and Lens) still in UEFA Cup qualifying, so if any of them go down, that's good news for Everton.

We will definitely be seeded now, a couple games have already been played.
So there you go Spider, nice and simple. We're seeded. No Bayern for us.

All those teams with better coefficients won. Good to see we'll be seeded, especially with Ajax dropping into the draw.

The five (http://www.uefa.com/competitions/uefacup/news/kind=1/newsid=577830.html) lucky bastards that might draw us:
UD Leiria (Portugal)
Standard de Liege, the 1982 Cup Winners Cup Winner (Belgium)
BATE Borisov (Belarus)
Metalist Kharkiv (Ukraine)
FC Sion (Switzerland)
At least we got to avoid Nurnberg, Red Bull Salzburg, Dinamo Zagreb, Toulouse and FC Kobenhavn...nothing to be too concerned about...

You mean like the time Everton played those nobodies from Romania?
Save it, Capt. Jinx-A-Lot. Nothing is easy with this club.

Looks like a pretty tough group to me.
Assuming the seeded teams go through to the round-robin phase, Villarreal is the obvious favorite to win the group, with Bayer Leverkusen a pretty good chance to finish 2nd.
Looks like Everton will be battling Galatasary and Zenit (anyone know much about them?) for the last spot that qualifies for the first knockout round.

So this is the grouping for the group stages as well? I didn't know that. Thanks, Rocket. Now I know what other matches to pay attention to and who to root for.

Actually, I think I might of made a mistake. :o
The Group draw is supposed to be held in early October.
So I'm not quite sure if the info posted by me and TrooperBari is correct.

i used to live in Kharkiv and went to a lot of Metalist games. It the second largest city in Ukraine but the football team is widely inconsistent. They were in the lower division a couple of years ago!
Everton should go through but I wouldn't overlook them.
here's a good English site about the Ukrainian league.
