As usual La Liga & Spanish broadcasters left it late to figure out broadcasting rights so not only do we pay the price but the people in Spain as well.
I don't want to look at any football-related websites for current info since I have recorded games still to watch & want to avoid spoilers but Sid Lowe's column in the Guardian yesterday (http://blogs.guardian.co.uk/sport/2007/08/24/spats_sackings_and_stroppy_sub.html) suggested we might be left out in the cold this first weekend:
"And there's an argument over the television rights, with Sogecable and Mediapro at each other's throats like some sort of deranged Emu, meaning we still don't know if there's going to be any football on the telly. And if so, which games will be shown. Or when."
And a google news search turned up this nugget from 22 August (http://www.typicallyspanish.com/news/publish/article_12101.shtml):
"The Television broadcasting of the Spanish football league, which starts this weekend, is in danger over a dispute over the broadcast rights.
Audiovisual Sport, who owns the rights has cut the signal to the Mediapro company, because they say there is an outstanding debt of 58 million €. AVS is 80% owned by Sogecable, the parent company of Digital Plus, the Spanish satellite subscription service."

Thought this deserved it's own thread rather than being down in the Soccer in HD thread.
Here's a Reuters story on it (http://in.reuters.com/article/sportsNews/idINIndia-29091820070822)

A minute ago we had confirmation that the Racing vs. Barcelona game will NOT be televised. (Valencia vs. Villarreal will be, though)

Thank you for the update. I was curious, as rights holders to La Liga, does GOLTV have the capability to switch to another game that is being televised on short notice? (It is a hypothetical question, since I don't know if any of the other four games being played at 1 pm ET are being telecast due to the dispute, but if any of them are, did you consider picking up an alternate game, or were just not interested in picking up a game involving middle-tier or lower clubs?)

I believe it has to do with the fact in Spain the clubs are signed up for TV rights individually. Last year, for example, the owner of Sevilla, I believe it was, was holding out for more TV money, and for several weeks, their games were not on anyone's TV schedule (although, I think that everyone knew in advance that the games were unavailable, so it did not cause last minute schedule cancellations like we have had this weekend). Since the rights here are sold as a single package, this is not readily apparent to the US viewer.

If yesterday I was pissed off, but today my anger is at an all time level. First, they had a whole ********ing summer to figure this shit out and when the ********ing season begins they pull this juvenile stunt??? Not only is this disrespectful to the fans, but also shows lack of ********ing professinalism on their side. A great match went unnotice because two ********ing fat bastards can't get their shit together with the contract. This is pathetic and ********ing insane.

Each team has sold the rights to either Audiovisual or Mediapro, games that involved between teams from the same broadcaster will be shown on La Sexta for Mediapro and on PPV for Audiovisual in Spain. Games where teams from both broadcasters are involved wont be shown. Audiovisual has cut the intenational feeds for their games, while the games that have been on Goltv have been from Mediapro teams.
Mediapro-Sevilla, Valencia, Levante, Racing, Villareal, Murcia, Zaragoza, and Getafe.
Audiovisual-the rest.

Not until the fighting parties settle their disputes.
If this thing is not settled by next weekend, GOLTv will have the following matches available to be shown according to DieFX:
Levante v Murcia

this is the stupidest thing ever. I am thankful for this thread though because I was going nuts trying to figure out why the 2 games I wanted to see most this weekend were unavailable.
Now that I know, I'm not annoyed anymore...i am f--king pissed off.

Anybody have any further news? GolTV guys, what's up? Are we only going to see games between teams signed by the same rights holder. This is the only other article I could find: http://football.guardian.co.uk/News_Story/0,,2154251,00.html

No, only games between teams signed by Mediapro (Sevilla, Valencia, Levante, Racing, Villareal, Murcia, Zaragoza, and Getafe) AudioVisual has cut the international feed for their teams and are showing it PPV only in Spain.
Not that this is anything new....I was searching for news as well on this latest dispute, and came across this BIGSOCCER.com thread from five years ago (with an extract from soccertv.com):
13 Sep 2002, 09:48 AM
FOX Sports International has purchased US TV rights
to the Spanish Primera Division (a.k.a. La Liga)
via an agreement with Barcelona-based sports
marketing company Media Pro.
Coverage on FOX Sports World (US) will begin
with Celta de Vigo vs Mallorca
on Sunday September 15 at 4pm ET/1pm PT.
Real Betis vs Real Madrid
FOX Sports World (US)
TELECAST CANCELLED DUE TO DOMESTIC TV DISPUTE
As of today Lopera has been paid the monies owed to him by
Audiovisual Sport. That means at least in Spain the game will be televised. Now it it up to Fox to ensure they take care of the last minute details so they can retransmit the game.
Somer things will never change....

Although the context shows how history repeats itself, I actually remember this and I think the canceled Telecast was a product of FSW not understanding their deal at that time rather than FSW having to cancel games because of rights issues in Spain. I remember being excited that FSW had picked up the rights because ESPN, who had been showing games late on Monday nights, decided not to air La Liga at all. But it turned out that FSW had actually acquired the rights to the 4th pick only. So the ads building up to the season promoted Barca and Real Madrid but we were basically treated to a season of Celta. Max Bretos could probably answer any trivia question about Moskovoy but beyond that can't tell you jack about the 2002 season. Not that any of this eases our pain but it does provide some historical context relative to US broadcasting of futbol. The cancelation that Oliver mentioned was not a contract issue in Spain; rather, Real Madrid was never a 4th pick in 2002. Take care.

FSW got lucky that Real Sociedad were leading the league most of the way, until the 2nd from last weekend when they lost to Celta. FSW showed a number of Real Sociedad that season.
And Celta was not bad either. They nipped Valencia in the last MD for the final CL berth, while Barcelona, struggling that year, didn't get their UEFA Cup berth until the last weekend.
