I enjoyed The Diving Bell and the Butterfly but my knowledge of French cinema is not vast.

They're great but I enjoy more La grande illusion, Drôle de drame or Le jour se lève.

I found a ton of foreign films at my local library.
French films are represented more than any other
group, plus many of the films are part of the Criterion Collection.

I created an account just so I could reply to this. Le Samourai, in the words of Peter Griffin, is freakin' sweet. I like Jean-Pierre Melville a lot. Just watched his Un Flic, really liked it, especially the train sequence -- watch and you'll see. Also in the French cops-and-crooks genre, Rififi is great. There's a half-hour-long scene that takes place mostly in one room and has exactly no dialogue but is still really interesting and exciting. Apparently it got banned because authorities in the '50s were worried bank robbers would use it as a how-to. All different in tone and stuff, but all good movies.
The Diving Bell and the Butterfly was really good, as well.

MELVILLE IS GOD
Along with Le Samouraï, his best movies are Army of Shadows (LE film ultime sur la Résistance française), the Red Circle and Doulos.
I could compare Bob the gambler with Kubrick's The Killing.
And I spit on Hollywood producing the REMAKE of the Red Circle. Heresy. Sacrilege.

OH YEAH! I just got Army of Shadows from Netflix and it was VERY VERY good. Lived up to the hype I heard about it when it got released over here not long ago.
Bob le flambeur is awesome, too, as is The Killing -- and as for that movie, I loved it and don't know why it isn't better-known.
You know, it's funny -- I don't know that I've ever seen Le cercle rouge. I have to remedy that.
I see you're from Nice. Where at? I love that town. I spent most of the last year living in Saint-Raphaël near Boulouris-sur-Mer and working in Fréjus.

Le cercle rouge is the only Melville's movie that the French TV regularly broadcasts - due to the casting: Bourvil, Alain Delon, Yves Montand.
I live in Nice since 2006, at the Port. :)
