From Bob Hunter this morning:

Team officials apparently tried to reward the local Latinos Unidos adult league for its involvement with the Crew, but the All-Stars apparently went into the game believing they could beat the Major League Soccer club.

After a Crew team composed mostly of subs and reserves jumped out to a 7-1 lead, things started to turn ugly, and when the Crew's Ben Hunter broke free for a breakaway in the box, the All-Stars goalkeeper went at him with studs up and drove right for Hunter's shins.

After the keeper was ejected and Hunter was helped off the field, the Crew scored two more goals before Andy Herron was decked in the corner. While trainers attended to him, Kei Kamara, who had scored three goals, made it clear what was coming next.

"I've never got a red card in my career," Kamara was heard to say, "but I'm about to get one right now."

It didn't happen. The game was called with the Crew leading 9-1, avoiding further trouble. Herron, meanwhile, is out for a week because of a deep ankle bruise.

I've played against many of the people and teams in those leagues, and this has to certainly be expected. Every game was a thug fest with most of the bush-league crap coming from their end. And those folks really thought that they could beat the Crew? Funny. So basically we lost one (maybe two) people in a freakin' scrimmage? Sounds like the smart decision was made, belatedly, to stop the game.

So I guess I didn't make an ass of myself for assuming that these guys really did think they were better than the Crew.

So we lose Herron for at least a week (probably two) when we are scheduled to play one of the best teams in the league for a PR stunt...wonderful.

Well certainly not to me. The contempt most foreign-origin communities in the US feel towards MLS is deeply rooted and ain't gonna change anytime soon.

Which is the main reason why we can hold all the "Ethnic Heritage" nights we want but it ain't gonna make them fans and MLS would do better to just forget it and focus on the quality of play.

Not looking like a bunch of retards who just fell off a bus and ended up in Crew Stadium in front of 21,000 patrons would go one whole hell of a lot farther towards establishing a permanent fan base than all the "outreach" and associated bullshit the Crew and everyone else has been desperately trying since 1996.

Bottom line, they think we suck, and they NEED to think we suck. It's not just that they're wrong - of course they are, it's ludicrous to think otherwise - but soccer is something they need to feel they have over the idiot Americans, something that is part of home, something that's part of them but not part of us and they aren't gonna lose that attitude if we beat snot out of them 1000 times.

Of course they thought they were going to win. They were sure of it. Our guys showed up for a kickaround and found themselves in a knife fight.

And you KNOW good and well that the keeper, and the guy who nailed Herron, are big heroes to their pals today. Big yucks, pats on the back, jokes, smiles, the whole deal.

WHoever came up with that idea should be fired immediately. Any halfwit could see that we had nothing, absolutely nothing to gain and a hell of a lot to lose.

The management put the guys into a no-win situation and are now shocked - SHOCKED - that the thing went sour.

Well what the hell did you expect? Have you guys learned NOTHING?

Naw... we should kiss and make up.

But NEXT time have a few DHS-INS agents on hand and make it known that anyone who gets a yellow or red gets an interview with a guvmint agent for their trouble.

Many strong California Club teams toughen up their players by scrimmages in the hard core hispanic leagues. Remember, Sigi is from So. Cal. I suspect Sigi felt the need to toughen up his players a bit after two weeks a child play. Maybe he succeeded. I am sorry Herron has a boo boo on his ankle but this team needs to suck it up and play had NOW!

Herron is a little baby now because he got injured?

It's a good thing that some littly whiny bitches got their panties all in a twist because they were losing to the reserves 2-0 before the reserves even started trying?

Reading Sirks notebook, he almost makes the original idea sound at least half decent. But when you get players who think they're better than they are who are going to get their feelings hurt and get all chippy because they can't take the blow to their ego, it's not a good idea no matter how you slice it.

Perhaps we should put the players in Mike Vick's dog cages to toughen them up.

Why do I get the idea if Robbie Rogers had gotten injured you'd be demanding the building of a border fence right now? Seriously, if you've seen Herron's ankle and can give us some insight to his injury, go right ahead, but if you've decided that he's not one of the 3 players you like and that means his injury is simply him faking, let it go.

As for the whole "getting tough by playing thugs" idea, I'd hope Sigi would think better of his team than that. Hell, if he wants to toughen 'em up, let Duncan and Danny O take shots at 'em...

If I ever meet Kei in person, his next few drinks are free. I don't specifically condone blind retaliation, but that crap is rediculous and I respect him for wanting to stick up for his team-mates.

Now if we get that passion on the field somehow...

Hmm... how could we get that passion on the field.... how to get Kei's passion for the sport and his team on the field during a game...

Dangit, I can't come up with one.

Picking up a halfwit in management would be an improvement wouldn't it?

I'd say the answer has something to do with Reggae. You should have seen him and Ezra at the Wailers concert... they were moving better than they have all year.

Soccer is a dangerous sport. If Rogers gets injured, Herron etc. its a part of the game. I am not happy about it but I do recognise that these things happen. All of them need to toughen up right now and get some wins and if it means playing a dirty physical match that toughens them up and allows them some minutes then so be it. I don't question Herron's injury, thats simply part of the game these boys play-hell the same thing could happen at practice.

By the way, Herron, Rogers and Guille are the three I would like to see playing together.

If there turn out to be no long lasting injuries and the Crew wins this weekend, is anyone willing to say Sigi might just have a method to his madness?

Ok, not likely. But dammit, guys... we've all but admitted defeat. Can a guy get something positive out of Crewland tonight?

I'm not above bribery...

If anyone could figure out a way to get Kei to score goals when he is out on the field then I'd be all about getting him out there more.
