the refs have made some bad calls this past week and are getting punished for them

but what about the players, especially goalkeepers?

does Middlesbrough's Schwarzer have any responsibility to own up to the goal or should he keep his mouth shut and let the ref 'make the save' for him?

It might look good if players starting doing things like that, but as far as I'm aware it wouldn't actually change anything. Referees are supposed to rule on what they see only, and not take into account what the players say happened, regardless of whether they're supporting a decision against their own team.
