I believe the double feature was prominent back in the day, and it still is in some ways at drive-in's. But after seeing a doouble feature in the city this weekend, I realized there are few better ways to spend a somewhat rainy afternoon.

So let's program a series of Double Feature's here, and explain why they make sense shown together. I'll go first...

Fritz Lang's Scarlet Street

with

Jean-Luc Godard's Contempt.

This popped into my head immediately after leaving the showing of Scarlet Street over the weekend. There are several reasons. The least of which is not Lang's role as director in Scarlet Street, and then as an actor playing a director in Godard's Contempt.

Beyond that Scarlet Street and Contempt both show how the artist while sometimes set up for a life of fame and fortune is always one (mis)step away from life of anonymity and possible lonliness.

Chaplin's Modern Times and Gilliam's Brazil

I think this is an obvious but still interesting double bill.

Darn. I thought this was a link to a website where you answer a bunch of questions and then it tells you your double bill is "Bottle Rocket" and "Raising Arizona".

I've seen a double-feature of Frankenstein and Spirit of the Beehive. That was marvellous.

You could also go with Le Samourai and the film that most directly influenced it:

"After the film's release Hitchcock received an angry letter from the father of a girl who refused to have a bath after seeing Diaboliques, Les (1954) and now refused to shower after seeing Psycho. Hitchcock sent a note back simply saying "Send her to the dry cleaners"."

Thats a great one. though I'd show Les Diaboliques second, under the premise the better film should always be second.
