I hope somebody at ESPN watched last night's FSC coverage of the RBNY-LA match. Whenever ESPN has done any LA games, they spend 90 percent of the game talking about what brand Kleenex Beckham uses and only when they can't think of anything else do they bother talking about the game we're watching. That's of course, the game we're watching only when the cameras are on the action and not on Beckham scratching his nose or whatever.

Last night's FSC coverage had the appropriate balance. There was always going to be some Beckham hype just because he's Beckham and because about 55,000 extra fans than normal were in attendance. But as much as I know some people don't like Max and Christopher (I'm not a huge fan myself), they never let the hype get out of control, in contrast to Stoner and Waldo who act like 15 year old girls at a Justin Timberlake concert. FSC never let the hype overshadow the actual fantastic soccer match and that's to their credit. I hope, but doubt, ESPN was taking notes.

And the whole thing was exactly what the MLS was looking for when they signed Beckham:

- New York
- 66,000 people
- Lots of goals, some of them exhibiting high level talent
- Two big name stars
- Home Team wins

With apologies to the L.A. Galaxy and their fans, the best thing for the MLS in the long run, is a season where the Galaxy goes to various other stadia and the home team wins right at the end of a match with lots of goals - just what we saw last night. That's what gets people to decide that they like soccer.

Only when they become dedicated fans will they find a hard fought 0-0 draw interesting...

Yeah, it wasn't too bad and I'm glad I tuned it. I've been avoiding anything B***ham related (we do not speak his name aloud). Nothing against the guy personally, but I'm so sick and tired of the hype.
