Futbol is still the #1 sport in Argentina and will continue to be in the foreseeable future. However, basketball has become much more popular specially in the south of Argentina (Bahia Blanca) since the weather is usually colder and its harder for kids to play outside all the time (IMO). The NBA and the local league have also grown considerably. However, soccer is still the most popular sport by far. If I had to rank the sports it would go something like this: Futbol, Basketball, Tennis, TC (car racing), Rugby, Field Hockey, Golf. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

I think that Basketball is the unquestionable second, and has been for a while, the LNB and the TNA(The 1st and 2nd division basketball leagues) are doing fine. The third and after i think could varie depending the performance of the representatives. As of now i think the third place is up for grabs. I would say it's.

3- Rugby/Hockey
4- Tennis
5- Volleyball

Sixth and under being the other sports, like Swimming or Handball. Regarding Hockey i think they got that place thanks to the female, the argentine women teams are clearly superior over the men who are trying to get into the big stage, although like it happens in Football, Argentina exports a good number of players to Europe, both male and female.

Rugby is HUGE as well and not just amongst the well to do. Last years semifinals showing in the Rubgy World Cup was a great accomplishment that catapulted Rugby into the national scene. Everyone was into Los Pumas and hoping for their win.

Also Basketball has been in institucion withint Argentina since the beginning of the 20th century with its base in Bahia Blanca. The obvious success of the National Team in the 2002 world cup and 2004 Olympics have also helped it gain national prominence in the world of Argentine sports. But I would say that it was more of a international prominence rather that domestically.

Argentina also has produced many great boxers, including:

Oscar_Bonavena (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oscar_Bonavena)

Carlos_Monzon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carlos_Monzon)

Formula 1 needless to say was owned by the Argentine Fangio only until recently when Schumaker finally surpassed his 5 world titles.

Fangio (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fangio)

Carlos_Reutemann (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carlos_Reutemann)

So as you can see, sports in general in Argentina are as popular as futbol just the its more for domestic consumption. Of course there are many international stars just not as many as there might be in futbol.

Rugby, Basketball, Field Hockey, Tennis, Volleyball are the biggest sports there. I went to a gym once and they had Field Hockey and Rugby being played, something that's totally different where I live.

If you don't see people playing football on every corner, Basketball is the next thing.
