Anyone ever been to Rio de Janeiro? I've heard several people say it's not a safe place...is this true?

I think it has one of the highest murder rates for a big city in the world.
Don't know how dangerous it is for tourists and/or gringos.

On wikipedia it says the murder rate equals that of war-areas such as Baghdad and Kabul.
Its a beautiful city and looks like a lot of fun, but I'm looking at this as a possible honeymoon destination and don't want to worry about me and the missus getting shot.

We'll need to see a picture of your missus to determine what she might like (or whether she should be shot). Seriously though, I'd avoid that third world country. It's the type of place I would easy go to regardless of any risk but I would be very reluctant to do similar with anyone else.

Come to Dubai if it's a winter honeymoon. Gorgeous place, absolutely amazing.

Just one suggestion: Bristol, Tennessee.

Nothing says 'I Love You' quite like buying tickets to sit amongst 160,000 drunken assholes watching 40 cars drive around in a really small oval.

If you stay to the tourist areas - and I literally mean that, the beach and some spots only - then you're safe. But the city is a slum, with corrupt cops, drug dealers, and shootings all the time. My friend got robbed 4 times in a 6 month spell while he was studying abroad.

Dude, go to Ecuador (Quito) and then make a side trip to the Galapagos. For the Galapagos, take a cruise on a small boat that travels from island to island overnight so that each morning you wake up in a new place.

You really want to introduce a MtP07 into that environment?

Why not? How much damage could MtP07 do to the Galapagos?

Three more weeks I think unless I activate the extension clause on my contract, then til January.
It's funny how you're bragging that USC is number 1 when we clearly smoked you last season when you had a better team. We're on the up, you're fading into nothingness. Bye bye, you cheating SCum bastards.

Not anytime soon, but I've got a big trip planned in my head. I'm thinking a 2 month all-out trip through Europe and/or Asia by myself, or maybe with a friend. Start off in the U.K., working through Spain/France by rail to Switzerland where I'll visit a couple friends doing international grad school there. A tad of Germany, then fly to India where I'll start the second month, going through Malaysia/Thailand and finishing up in Hong Kong.
It sounds great now, but unfortunately this isn't until Summer 09. I was going to do it this next summer, but a)I'll only have 22 vacay days, in other terms a month off and b) I should be doing med school apps/paperwork next summer. It blows cuz as SirManc reminded me, Euro08 is next summer, but oh well.
With this plan I'll have 10 carryover + 22 vacation days from next year, so I can "quit" my job in May, take this 2 month experience, and still get paid the whole time I do it.
Gives me something to look forward to in life anyway.
