Materazzi: Here's what I told Zidane
Saturday 18 August, 2007
Marco Materazzi has finally broken his silence to reveal the exact phrase that prompted Zinedine Zidane to head butt him in the World Cup Final.

The two men have always been cagey about what was said that day in Berlin on July 9 2006, although Zizou had hinted it was an insult to the women in his family.

Over a year later, Materazzi has confessed the precise words that ended the Frenchman’s career in disgrace.

The players were tugging each other’s shirts during a set-piece in the Italian penalty area when Zidane turned to Materazzi and said “If you really want my shirt, you can have it after the match.”

At this point Matrix admits he responded by saying: “I’d prefer your slut of a sister.”

Zidane took a few more paces, turned and head butted the defender in the chest, prompting his dismissal.

The revelation came in an interview with Italian magazine ‘TV Sorrisi e Canzoni’ and ends months of speculation.

At first there had been suggestions there were racist elements to his comment, but it seems to have been more basic trash-talk on the field of play.

It still earned Materazzi a two-match ban from FIFA for “provocation”, just one less than his aggressor Zidane’s three-match suspension.

“I tried to learn from my mistakes,” added the Inter star. “I have stepped over the line in the past and I apologised for that. I have matured.”

The question marks over what exactly was said even prompted a joke book written along with Materazzi and all the proceeds are going to charity.

I knew before the World Cup final 06 that Zidane was a legend
and that Materazzi was a thuggish goon.

Nothing has changed.

I'm not saying that Zidane was right, but I understand why
he did it.

I can't really blame either side on this incident. I'm not saying what Matterazzi did was right, but in the heat of the game some people try to get the mental edge. But at the same time, tempers get the best of people durring the heat of the moment and I understand why Zizou did what he did, if I was in the same situation I would've done the same thing (well I probably would've punched him).

Don't know how much it matters, but AP has the translation of what Materazzi said as "I prefer the whore that is your sister." I think we all get the meaning, but we're probably going to see it translated 6 different ways.

This Mexican journalist that is in Korea for the U-17 world cup, has another take on this story.

Its in Spanish so I'll just give a brief summary. He talks about getting the info from a French football official in Korea.

Zidane had supposedly cheated on his wife with a singer named Nadiya.

Her pic: http://funweb.epfl.ch/site0506/karbeaud/images/nadiya%203.jpg

He denied it and the rumors went away. But it seemed that the story was true and when Zidane's wife found out she flipped, so in order to get even with Zizou she cheated on him with.

Filippo Inzaghi!!!

Come world cup time Materazzi was holding on to Zidane all throughout the game. Zizou told him that if he wanted the shirt he would give it to him at the end of the game. Materazzi replied, "great I'll give it to Pippo, it wouldn't be the first thing he has had of yours."

Zizou flipped and the rest is history.

the last thing you want to do is insult an arabs wife, sister , or mother. they take that stuff very seriously.

ah man here in north america you can't even play a pick up game of hoops without " yo mama this, yo mama that". people talk trash playing every sport here. but we all know not to say anything like that to muslim people. that's respectable.

I'm not Muslim and noone can say something like this if he want to to have all his teeth at the end of the game. I can understand a friend saying that to make a joke but when I don't know the person ....

I agree. If someone said that about my family, it's go time.

My friends would never say something like that, they are far too kind and
I guess considerate/mature, lol.
