"While U.S. national-team supporters are seemingly content with hosting the Seleção, Mexico supporters are left with essentially the same type of match. After all, Mexico replaced an opponent with no chance of winning in the Azteca with another opponent that has no chance of winning in the Azteca.
Granted, the U.S. would have provided better competition than Panama, but the result will be the same."
This after the usmnt has won both matches against mexico his year, granted both games in the usa... but still i honesty believe that game would of be our first victory in azteca.... would do u guys think??

What? The last two WCQs were each 1 goal losses. You make it sound like it was CR vs. USA from last summer. I mean, wtf John?

Remember if it wasent for that crazy second goal from the U.S. i think Mexico would have pulled off a win. It seems as though the last U.S. vs Mexico game in the states was pretty close in a game that Mexico controlled, in the "AZTECA" i doubt the USMNT could have pulled off a win, just being realistic.
It's better this way anway, i want to see Brazil face off against both the U.S. and Mexican squads, especially since Brazil lost to Mexico during Copa America, makes things more interesting.

A game that "Mexico controlled"? Were you watching the same game as the rest of us? The US dominated that game, and if not for poor finishing, it would have been a 3 or 4 goal victory, not just a single goal. And that was in front of a crowd that was probably 80% or more Mexican, despite it being in the US.

We controlled the attack and the tempo in the middle of pitch in the 2nd half, something which we've never done. We've always counter-attacked (very well, thanks to Mr Donovan and Mr Beasley) and set-pieced them to death. Our midfield is looking superior to theirs these days.

Well to be fair I'd say that until halftime he was right. Once Clark came on for Mastro (an excellent halftime coaching move that I was screaming for from about 10 minutes into the match) it all changed.

Doesn't really matter how we played Mexico last time in Chicago. Azteca is a different beast. We always struggle in away matches. Now factor in the altitude, smog, and 100,000 hostile fans... all this against a team that would rather die than lose to us in their home fortress...
Good test for our team? You betcha!
But the chances of us winning? Not very good at all.

The writer must be Mexican.
Let me guess, the poster must be ignorant.
Luis is an outstaning writer and a fan of the USMNT. (as well as Mexico football). His blog with Andrea Canales is one of the best around. Sure, he took a shot at us but based on the history of Azteca and our play in it -- it sure seems hard to argue with. If you're going to criticize him for being Mexican than perhaps you should do a quick Google search on some of his articles slamming Mexico for its lack of sportsmanship in being unwilling to give credit to the US after several of the recent victories. Luis is just a tremendous sportswriter who calls it like he sees it . . .

Come on. Bueno is the most pro-anything-Mexican homer of a writer that has ever lived. I don't criticize him for being Mexican, just for being an uber-homer. To say the US has no chance of winning in the Azteca is absurd, regardless of their record there. They certainly have a chance and will win there before long. Certainly, to say that scheduling the US is exactly the same as scheduling Panama is absurd.
In the article he claims that most of the Mexican teams didn't take the SuperLiga seriously and belittled it's importance because, frankly, the showing of the Mexican teams in this tournament was embarrassing, so of course they'll say they didn't care about it. We saw how the MLS teams got spanked in the CONCACAF Champions Cup because they were in pre-season form. Bueno went on and on at the time about how superior the Mexican league teams are. Well, most of the Mexican teams got spanked in the SuperLiga largely for the same reason, but now it's just an "unimportant competition" with "no history."
Any way you slice it, after looking at these two competitions on balance, you've got to conclude that MLS teams are close to or actually on par with Mexican teams, but they'll never admit that because of their "history and tradition," etc.
It's all B.S. You KNOW the Mexican teams cared about SuperLiga. They always care when it comes to taking on American teams - certainly the fans do. They're just using their typical excuses and explanations for losing. "We only care about tougher, South American Competition, blah, blah, blah..." We've heard it all before. The fact is the US National team is now the best in CONCACAF, until proven otherwise, and MLS teams are catching up to, and even may be on par with Mexican league temas right now. Deny it all you want, Mr. Bueno. Facts are facts.

Hate to break it to you, but there is a difference between the USMNT v. Mexico National Team and professional football in Mexico and MLS. While not apples and oranges, there is a clear distinction. You may have missed it (reading comprehension and all) but this thread was about the USMNT and playing in Azteca. After conducting a 30 second google search, here was the last thing I found Luis write about the USMNT and Mexico. . .
With a determined, focused and strong Mexico side on display Sunday at Chicago's Soldier Field, Mexican players should be left with one thought in their minds: 100 percent wasn't good enough.
The U.S. captured its second consecutive Gold Cup title with a convincing 2-1 victory over Mexico in Sunday's final. In a game filled with drama, desire and dangerous plays, it was CONCACAF's best who came out on top.
He's actually one of the best Mexican writers around and perhaps you should actually read some of what he writes about the USMNT before you post.
Finally, as to the seperate issue of MLS versus Mexican Professional Football I think that over the past several years MLS has closed the gap SIGNIFICANTLY but that there remains a small gap and that MLS is probably a slightly inferior league. Regardless, are you really putting all your chips on Superliga a competition where ALL of the matches were played in the US and a Mexican team may well still win the Championship -- to prove that MLS is a superior or equal league. I think its getting close to being more equal but your logic seems to stray into more of a personal fantasy.

Are you one of those guys that believe in those rankings that put the red bulls as a top 30 team in the world?
Must be a nice view from that pedestal you're on
