From “Futbol de primera….”
Yeah the Biggest is kinda hidden........ Hopefully they have "La Selecta" burger when i go back. What's on it? I assume for 99c it most be plain or very much like a cheese burger?
OK, sure its still there then …. I am not sure, cos I don’t use fast food places, but will check for you … might even have one, for a change!
I do hate it that we have SOOO many fast food restuarants though. It just shows how Americanized we've become, which is not a good thing.
Well, yeah, the US influence here seems infest every possible aspect of life, and it is indeed a very bad thing, a wholly malignant influence, and depresses me beyond words… It is one of the main reasons I am leaving. I feel that any sense of Salvador as a country with its own distinct culture, history, etc is crushed at every turn … I am sure that is unnecessarily pessimistic, but it is depressing. I have to say the well-off Salvadorians that I have met (and obviously I live with them) are just about the nastiest and most ignorant social class I have ever known … again probably unfair, but its how I feel right now. And because of years of repression any non-well-off Salvadorians tend to see my white skin and hear my accent and automatically are overly craven with me… I usually talk football, as it can break down that ingrained negative “master & slave” relationship …... I see the way these ********ers talk and treat their maids and stuff, and it seriously makes me almost physically sick....
I do love the depth and breadth of football here, this is a genuinely “proper” footballing nation, you could argue that it is the most “footballing nation” in the whole of CONCACAF, and that is something that has remained despite everything…. And now the yanks are coming to take even that – PLEASE PLEASE let Firpo beat Houston this week, PLEASE……
Apparently the Salvadoran government wants to keep making more malls all over the place, and i don't know about you guys, but i don't really like it. Again, it's taking away our culture and making us very much like a little USA. Hopefully they stop it, cause if they keep it up then we might one day lose our identity all together :(
Once again, mate, I find myself in 100% agreement with you … these malls are awful, and the money should have been spent on tarting up the centre more … because the malls have a two-fold negative effect .. a) money is ploughed into them, and not into making the streets nice comfortable and safe, and b) it becomes self-fulfilling, in that people with money will go to the Malls, making the streets poorer and more dangerous, encouraging more people into the malls, thus the markets and street sellers and “normal” shops lose more custom, and so it spirals … Honestly, can you imagine what a tourist would do in Salvador? Go to a ********ing mall? This ********ing Government makes me so angry, and every time I see a ARENA rally here, I want to ask them two questions:- a) how long have you been in charge? And b) how ********ed up is this country? And yet I guess people are scared to vote against them, in case their friends in the north start sending a million bucks a day to the military again …..
Also, we should probabaly move this discussion to one of the El Salvador threads in NSR, as it has nothing to do with la Primera.
OK
Listen I have just read that again, and it sounds like I am dissing Salvador – I really don’t mean to, it is a wonderful country, with wonderful people, but it has been so crushed and mistreated and ********ed on by bad people for so long it is depressing – I am a lucky bastard cos I can up and leave, but I honestly see that the future is very dark for the vast majority of Salvadorians, and it doesn’t have to be that way …. So:- sorry, I do NOT hate Salvador at all, but I am very sad about the situation here….. and the football here I have grown to love, and although I won’t be here to see it, I am so excited about ES re-taking it’s rightful place in the World Cup …..

Yeah, i'm generaly not one for fast food places myself. I try to stay clear of them, especially Mc Donalds as there burgers are not only small but tasteless. When i was younger i was a HUGE fan of Burger King/Hungry Jacks but now that i'm older and i know about how unhealthy those places are, i try and stay away.
Although being in El Salvador i can't get enough of Biggest. I mean i wouldn't eat there every day, but if i had to go to a fast food place it would be Biggest first, followed at a distant second by Pollo Campero.
Well, yeah, the US influence here seems infest every possible aspect of life, and it is indeed a very bad thing, a wholly malignant influence, and depresses me beyond words… It is one of the main reasons I am leaving. No you're right. Slowly but surely, El Salvador is losing it's identity and in doing so losing what made it such a great place to begin with. I mean i'll always love the country no matter what, but i do agree that's it's depressing to see so many changes.
People will argue that the changes are helping the country or that it's just globalization and there is nothing we can do about it, but that's garbage. Politically speaking i'm not a AREANA supporter or a FMLN supporter, but i do blame ARENA for making El Salvador what it is today, that is, practically a little USA that has effectivly become just another extended state/territory for the US government. This is the main reason that i hope we see change in March next year when we have our elections. Hopefully Funes can do a good job and give El Salvador back some of it's identity and possibly keep his some connections with the US, but at the same time not suck up or be the US' puppet like ARENA.
As for the upper class Salvadorans, i do agree that the majority of them do think of themselves as Gods and look down on those poorer people that struggle to make a living. And in doing so, makes those poorer people have preconsived ideas as to what all those with money are like. Obviously not all Salvadorans that are well off are stuck up, but it's very obvious that they treat people differently according to what social class they are in.
As for the maids, well i've never been a fan of the idea of having someone around to meet your needs at every hour. I personally felt REALLY uncomfortable, when i stayed at my uncles place while in El Salvador and the maid would offer to wash my clothes or even just wash my plate after eating. 90% of the time i'd was my own plate even though she told me to leave it, and i always washed my own clothes. I know it's there job and fair enough they get paid to do it, but what they get paid is close to nothing. I believe i read somewhere that the average maid in San Salvador makes about $130 a month (but that was a few years ago, so it may very well have changed. Although i doubt it). And it wasn't only that, but like you said, the way that the maid is treated is very unfair. They do so much work and are treated very unfairly. Or atleast that's the way i saw it, but again, i'm not used to the idea of a maid and maybe that's just how it is. But even then, it gives them no reason to treat the maids like they are less then anyone else.
I love that we are so into football also, but i hate it that again even with football everything has become about the all mighty dollar and as a result keeps the "poorer" fans from even attending live games. I mean i don't like seeing such a HUGE increase in prices when it's a WCQ, and even though i know the federation has to make money somehow, to charge $5-8 bucks for SOL is ridiculous.
And as a Firpo fan i'm obviously with you, on having Firpo beat Houston. If we can pull off the win, it would be FANTASTIC. Hopefully, we can continue our recent good form and get the win, so that we are already qualifed by the time we have to play them again at the end of next month.
I agree. The malls do have some good to them, but again it's for the rich and the poor get left with nothing. The market people who struggle to get through as it is, are now struggling ten times as much as a result of the malls scatered in such a close distance to one another. And it seems like the govenrment doesn't care, and just wants to keep on building.
I don't know if you've been to any of the beach resorts around La Libertad or Sonsonate, but it's the same thing there, although with beach side hotels. Fair enough it's bringing in tourists, but again we are killing off our land just to make a buck. I remember when i went to la Costa del Sol back in 2001 and the place was so peaceful and clam it was great. There were no hotels and all you had was those people that had there little "stalls" on the beach that would sell you cocktails and drinks. You'd lay back on the hammacks and relax or jump into the water and have a great time. Now you go there and it's all concerte beach resorts, targeting foreign tourists or the upper class Salvadorans. I remember my brother went to the Decameron beach hotel in Sonsonate the year before last, and was treated as a nobody because they thought he didn't have any money. Then i went there at the start of last year and got the same thing (although not from everyone, but it was clear that Salvadorans were treated differently than the tourists). It seemed to me as if the people at the hotel saw you speaking spanish they would treat you differently then if you spoke to them in english, which again isn't right.
Don't worry, i for one don't take any offence to what you said. It's the way you feel and that's fine. I agree with you on most nearly every point that you said, so i don't take it as a diss at all. I do agree that if we continue the way we are going then things are just gonna keep going the same way as they are now, which although some people see it as good, i don't really like. Again, hopefully the elections can bring a change for the better and help El Salvador refind itself and help all of it's people, and not just the rich. Hopefully Funes is the man to do it, and hopefully the FMLN let him do his job and don't push to make El Salvador another Cuba, Venezuela etc. Which i very much doubt will happen, but if it does then well be exactly in the same posision that we are in now, although instead of being so extremly right winged minded, we'll be extremlly left, and in my opinion neither of these two policital stand ponts will help El Salvador in the long run. But hopefully atleast FMLN can hopefully even things out and do something for the poorer people of El Salvador. Ultimatly it's a policital problem that can be fixed, but it's just a matter of having the right people in charge and making the right changes to benefit everybody. Right now, the problem is continuing to grow and if something isn't done to stop it or even slow it down, then it could one day get to a point were all the damage that has been done will be irreversible and all of El Salvador and it's people will sufer as a result.

great response, thanks.... about the maids, I know one who lives in (the rooms they have to live in, you honestly would not believe, it's so tiny), and looks after a baby as well as washing cleaning cooking etc gets $200 a month.
I was very uncomfortable with having someone in to clean, when we first moved to Mexico, but then, as you say, its work for them and I can afford it, so why not? We pay $7 for about 3-4 hours cleaning - and we actually put that up and so are paying "over the odds" if you can believe that. We get on great with her. I have to tell her to sit down in a seat or to take water to drink, because she is used to not being allowed to ... honestly. Also if we happen to be away, and don't need her, or if she is sick, we still pay her - which I think probably makes us unique, but I get paid for holidays and if I am ill, so why shouldn't she? AND its only seven ********ing dollars! To be honest it has made me HATE the word "muchacha" because thats what they call them, and it is so loaded.....
Yeah you know the expensive seats at these WCQ games are $51 ... they went, $6, $16, $32, $41, $51 - 16 to 32 is a big leap, yet when Metapan played Marathon in Champions League it was $1, $2, $3 $4 and $5. most league games start at $4... but see above, if you are getting $7 for a half days work, its a fair slice innit?
Those resorts like Decameron (Melia are terrible) tend to be foreign owned, so even if you do bring tourists in, all the money they spend tends to go abroad, with a pittance left in the pockets of the staff, on rock-bottom wages. So the country does not really benefit, I never go to them, if I have to make sure you tip heavily... Whenever and wherever you travel ALWAYS avoid big resorts, big multi-national chain hotels - stay at a family owned small hotel, or even rooms in a house, eat on the street, in markets, etc etc ...just avoid international chains at all costs ... it means more of your $$ stay where you visit, and 9 times out of 10 you have a much better experience anyway .....
That experience at the Hotel you had, makes me sick. A friend of mine in Mexico, who had lived in China, talked about his "MWS" -... how, he would think, can a drunken twat like me get treated so royally? This doesn't happen in UK they think I am a twat and tend to bar me, whereas here I can saunter into the classiest places without a second look.... AHHH it must be my MWS - "magic" white-skin .... i think the vast majority of white people, just never really understand that, and that on the other side of the coin it makes things difficult every single time.....
As for ARENA / FMLN, I am not sure Funes will be able to do wonderful things, but the strength of most democracies is regular change, so its high time, but the real worry is not how hard left they might prove to be, but if internal and external forces decide to stand by democracy or interfere with them as they have with every single left leaning Latin American government ... I think you know what "external forces" I am talking about.....

idk if i want to read everything. when you move out of El Salvador you try to forget all the bad things of our pulgarcito and remember only the great things that the country have to offer.
arguing with my older brother, i told him that the problem isnt the capitalism, is the people in power. you can have the best type of government that there is out there... the republic was great when the criollos hispanic created it, all the mestizos and natives little by little were adapting to the spanish way of living, this criollos died and defend the flag like not other.
then we had the whole globalization crap the US Imperio knocking on the door.
El Salvador was never really a "mesoamerican" country, most of our native people died and the few left were mixed with spanish-salvadoran low class.
To say that we are losing or native way of living to a northern european or north american way of capitalism is wrong... but we are losing our tradition spanish way of living.
Education is still the biggest factor, people decides to get out of the pueblos and cantones were they have not civilization and just work, they dont think of learning to read and write, learning math or sciences, getting little education, the same happen to a lot of salvis coming the states, they came here only to make descent money and they dont care about school.
The educational problem goes back to the colony days, Spain was never the smartest or the most educated country in Europe, they did had a lot of power bc of their naval, they picked up a lot of money by colonzing our lands... but spain is not any different from El Salvador, the moors were in power, the french were in power... they are not really the best country to live in although they do have money.
El Salvador is in between uneducated and poor south spain and extreme capitalism like cuba used to be where you had the big casinos and the big north ameicans in ferraris and you had people starving to death of hunger outside of the upper class mansions.
All I can tell you is the Funes comes to power and I really hope the FMLN helps him bc Funes may be a great guy but the FMLN are bunch of people filled with anger and who knows if they really have the maturity to run the country and to be in power.
Anyway, ARENA is history just like Alianza... the oligopolist of El Salvador gone have to suck it up or go back to Zuiza where they build all their banks after robbing the Salvadoran people.
VAMOS FUNES, HASTA LA VICTORIA SIEMPRE!!

HAHA, cool pics :D
I'm 99% sure that it's at Multi (there is one in Las Cascadas on the second floor in the food court, but that's not it and i don't remember there being one at La Gran Via); but who knows, maybe it's no longer there. Come to think of it, i think i remember going to the food court at Multi and there was a Biggest there too. So maybe they closed the one i'm talking about. It was on the ground floor and you could see it from the street on the other side of Multiplaza (the side you go on to go to POPS Blue at La Gran Via. What's that street called?). I also remember that they were building that one (the one in front of Plaza Merliot) when i was there. So maybe that took over the Multiplaza one
It's like practically face to face with Plaza Merliot right? On the Chiltiupan side? And on the other side of Merliot there is a Blockbuster video and a little further down there's a petrol station?
Oh and how was the burger? Any good? :D

I am pretty certain there is not a Biggest in the Multiplaza food court, neither... anyway ....
I have another two sets of 3 pictures to put up ... will do later ... the burger was OK ... but I know nothing of these things, I really rarely have them ... I have never in my life eaten a McDonalds, for example....
Yeah the sort of "bottom" corner of the Merliot. by the footbridge from the McDonalds (http://www.mcspotlight.org/) over the bus stop ... well the 1st photo was taken from the footbridge, so thats how close ... yep the "top" corner has a petrol station after it (opposite the Don Pancho's), and the Blockbuster has gone mate, now a big China Wok ... its so weird round there, there is also a Pizza Hut and TWO Burger Kings - all three of those are also in the Merliot itself, and all of them are always empty as far as I can tell.. .. also interesting about the Blockbuster going, so often you see big business crush the little fella, well it seems all the blokes selling pirate DVDs outside finally did for the Blockbuster!

HAHA, it's good to here you've never had McDonalds. Like i said, i'm no fan of them either, there's only 2 burgers on their entire menu that are okay, but even then they are not that great.
Weird that Blockbuster is gone, but i guess your right, the pirate DVD sellers do sell a lot more; i know they got a lot more business from me then Blockbuster did when i was there that's for sure :D
Good news on the China Wok, atleast it's giving them some variety instead of having only burgers to choose from.
Ayways, can't wait for the rest of the pics, it brings back the memories :)

HAHA, thanks for the pics mate, great stuff :D
I'm definatly gonna be hitting up Biggest for breakfast when i get there, it looks real good. My cousins raved about breakfast at Pollo Campero when i was there but we never got a chance to go, so i'll be trying them out too. :)
Oh and you gotta LOVE the Kolashanpan, that stuff is the greatest, and for all those other foreign based Salvadorans, that's the Kolashanpan made by La Cascada, not the fake Kolashanpan that we get that's made in LA via Mexico. :D
Yeah i love that stuff, although i do think i prefer the Uva over the more traditional "orange" flavored drink. Oh and i used to love it back in the day when you'd go and buy a drink down at the local tienda and they'd give it to you in a small plastic bag with a straw so they could get the money back for recycling the bottles. I don't know if it's just me, but the drinks tasted SOOO much better when they gave it to you like that. Now adays, they just give you the bottle and although you can ask to have it in a bag, some people don't do it. But in saying that, my cousin told me not so long ago that they might be going back to using the plasitc bags, which is great.
Oh and Disco you gonna be hitting up the Pupusas tomorrow for the big day? Maybe head down to Olocuilta?
