I just got my Colorado "Provisional" High School badge. Looking forward to trying out the "double dual" ( 3W) system.

Any words of advice out there?

Good luck.

Funny this came up, I was talking with another referee down in Colorado today and he said I should get CHSAA certified. If they didn't use the 3W system I probably would...

Study you "mechanics guide". No different that ten of thousands of Basketball officials across the country with 3 referees on a much smaller playing surface.
Cover your "primary", do not go "looking" to do the whole job outside of your area. Limit "ball watching" when the ball leaves your "primary" you are to be officiating the "off ball" players, to eliminate illegal off ball activity.

Yes. Quit while you're ahead.

The dual system is probably the worst refereeing system ever invented and it doesn't make it very easy to control a match.

Have you ever had an assistant referee call a foul from 70 yards away when it was right in front of you? Well get ready to find out what that feels like.

Bingo. And remember to flap your arms like a bird when signalling dangerous play, otherwise nobody will know what you're calling......

Florida has just switched to the Double Dual. Here is a letter from the Miami area referee association which spells out many of the downsides of this system.

That's a very well thought out letter. I'll keep it around, as I've heard an administrator or two from my state wax fondly about the double-dual.

All you three-whistle folks, you have my sympathies.

My prediction is that your double-dual, three whistle system will be in place for one season, maybe two at the most after which you will return to the normal diagonal system of control (one whistle, two flags like everybody else in the world does it!). That's what happened here in NC...tried it, hated it, back to common sense after another school administrated nonsensical idea bit the dust.

PA seems to like it... God only knows why...?

There is actually one scenario in which I like the three-whistle deal (although bluedevils 'bout bit my theoretical head off when I meandered into this subject on another thread!). The assigning for HS games around here seems kind of political...older refs get assigned centers based on longevity rather than ability sometimes and then are unable to keep up with play or unwilling to pull out a card when I feel (know!) it is necessary. In that situation, where the game can get out of control when the center does not assert authority, I was able to step in and whip out a card on plays I deemed it necessary rather than watching the match deteriorate further.

Otherwise, I hate it myself...best of luck to PA HS soccer.

'Double Dual' has invaded Florida. :(

http://www.fhsaa.org/scb/double_dual.doc

Seems that Joseph Bonchonsky was they guy that invended the 'Double Dual' back in 1973.

Interesting note here ...
One of the prime movers in the accelerated growth of the American Youth Soccer Organization was Joe Bonchonsky,

Does anyone else find it interesting that even the AYSO does not use Mr Bonchonsky's three whistle system??

I continue to be amused by the "Americans" that have to reinvent the game of soccer, while the entire rest of the world plays the game the same way!

Remember the first season of MLS? Or the old NASL?

As for the three-whistle circus vs the three person team......OH BOY!

I have seen it used in nearby Pennsyltucky...what a show...the poor players had no idea what was going on.

As to the dual syste....asked a HS "instructor" how anyone could possible BOTH keep up with and close to play and properly call offside...his response...are you ready.....here goes.....after the first few minutes of the game the referee should be able to identify which players will be offisde and you can call it that way, you do not have to be in line with the second to last defender.

I thought that interesting:)

That's why Iowa's high school Instructors and Assignors are also USSF Referees with considerable experience!

Several years ago, the state high school administrators decided to go with the three whistle system. After months of negotiation with additional training in the DSC system for all high school referees, they accepted that we could continue to use the DSC. They also got what is now an immediate 10 minute sub out for any yellow card recipient, but it was a restriction we agreed to for DSC. WHEW!!!

That is what we are working towards here in NJ.

As a USSF instructor myself, the comment on how to call offside made my head spin!

Slowly HS soccer is coming in line with the rest of the world. The fact that many of the players also play highly competetive club ball also helps.

Oakland County Michigan (N & NW Detroit suburbs) has discontinued using 3-whistle this season. AR's with flags, DSC.

The last point only further underlines (as if it was needed) how absurd the variations in high schools rules are. Almost all of these kids in high school have played under some form of FIFA rules, and they see it all the time when they watch professional games on TV. Everyone else in the world--including these very same kids--plays under FIFA rules and the DSC.

Grats Shvano, Hi from another Colorado Referee!!

Advice:
Ask lots of questions before the game and lots of communication weather its eye contact or talking it helps a lot.

Have a good season.

I just got back from our local board interpretation meeting. We have been instructed to strictly adhere to the "illegal equipment = cautioned coach" policy, and to terminate matches if a coach is ejected for 2 cautions because of illegal equipment. Apparently a few scrimmages have already been terminated.

On a positive note, I think this will have the effect of bringing coaches/players into compliance once varsity games across the state begin to be terminated in the dozens. If coaches see that officials have no problem banging them twice for equipment and then ending the game, it'll get them to REALLY check to make sure their players are properly equipped.

Proper procedure for issuing second caution to coach for illegal equipment: 1) Tell player to leave field and correct improper equipment; 2) Show coach yellow card and then show red card; 3) Run like hell to the car and floor it all the way home.
