GolTV will air the Toulouse - Liverpool CL qualifier Wednesday at 10:30 am.
Congrats to GOLTV!!!!! http://www.goltv.tv/en_index.php
In the past, Setanta would pick up a match like this...especially considering that the gametime does not interfere with their PL coverage that afternoon. They seem to have been cutting back a bit lately (no Amsterdam or Rotterdam tournament either this year, and on the first weekend of them being added to DishNetwork.... a friend of mine who gets Dish tuned in on the free preview and was asking me, where's the soccer?)

I hope so. I'd love to hear Ray call a Reds game.

I also hope that gol TV uses in studio announcers , as I would like to hear how they pronouce some of the names as they always mipronounce the names of some of the players.

During today's game, GOLTV announced that they would be showing the 2nd leg of this CL tie. The graphic said August 29 and didn't give a time, but that was probably the tentative schedule date.
The actual date/time of the 2nd leg will be August 28 at 3:05 pm ET.

I guess Ray was sleeping in for this one. The B-team they had out there was pretty atrocious: called Jermaine Pennant "Steve Pennant" (was he thinking Steve Finnan?), the graphics kept saying "Veronine" when it's spelled "Veronin", and when Momo Sissoko came in for Steven Gerrard, the color guy (I forget the two commentators' names) said that it was a tactical move, bringing in a very attacking midfielder and that Sissoko didn't have much defensive presence.
Come on guys, I know you don't cover the EPL teams regularly, but do some research before the game.
But hey, they provided a live feed of the game. No complaints about that.

Those announcers were awful. The color commentator in particular.

This was shocking to me. Even if they don't cover the EPL, they should at least know that Gerrard is one of the best attacking midfielders in the world right now. I can understand that they won't know much about Momo, but the claim was still brutal.
I say this again and again: the announcer's job is to call football games. There is just no excuse for the lack of knowledge about major players. If you work as an auto mechanic and misidentified things day in and day out, you would be out of a job, yet these guys are working for an international station.

Agreed. I will take any coverage over no coverage, but Gol should do better than this with the commentary.

I don't think I've laughed so hard in a long time. And is it just me or does Kelly O'donnell sound as if he's sick or that he's faking his interest in soccer with his voice. Can't wait for their commentary in the 2nd leg.

I switched to the Spanish commentators, I simply couldn't stand the other two. That guy also constantly gave wrong info during the Bayern-Rostock match on Saturday.
And Kelly sounds like he should be on some home-shopping network.

The Liverpool x Toulouse game, Tuesday 28th, will be shown 300pm ET, LIVE. It was mistakenly programmed 200pm ET.
Some week we are having ... ;)

I know there are currently multiple threads going about GOL and their in house commentators, but I have to reiterate a point I made last year: Kelly O'Donnel and the guy who was paired with him for the first leg are so bad that Ray Hudson and Phil Schoen sound like the best commentators on the planet. I honestly think Kelly is kept around just to make the others sound better.
Anyway, I lucked out and caught the corrected time on Soccertv.com so I didn't miss the match. Thanks, Gol for carrying this (and adding the Bremen game tomorrow). I hope you will carry qualifiers in future seasons and even increase the quantity of games (i.e., it would make sense to carry teams from leagues that run on goal--in this case adding Sevilla's qualifiers into the mix). Take care.

Yes, I appreciate that GolTV is carrying these qualifiers. But I really, REALLY can't stand the studio announcing. It seems like most people can't.
Like when Phil today said "ARSENAL" were coming in with a 1-0 victory, or when Ray Hudson said he had experienced the Anfield glory one time at ST. JAMES' PARK... I mean really, enough is enough.

Some people are really nitpicking now.
Today, Phil and Ray did an awesome job. No, it wasn't perfect, but hell the European feed isn't either. I see mistakes in their work as well.
The level of knowledge was especially good today and 'knowledge' is what matters to me most, because it can make the match so much better to listen to, if the guys actually know about these players and have a deep knowledge.
Even the Toulouse players that came off the BENCH today, weren't unknowns to Ray and Phil.
Phil said the correct things about Fabinho and Bergougnoux when they came on. Saying Fabinho is a work-horse and that's what he is. He's got lots of stamina, determination and a high level of work-rate.
He also knew that Bryan Bergougnoux was a former France U-21 player who once was tipped for a big future, but the talented player, has never really made the next step.
Ray knew that Toulouse had over-achieved last year and they really aren't one of France's best teams. And Phil and Ray knew some of the qualities Emana possesses as well as guys like Mathieu and Douchez and unlike most of the ignorant media, weren't just labeling this a one-man team in Johan Elmander.
Ray was funny at some parts and Phil did good play-by-play along with some good and correct observations on BOTH sets of players (which is impressive because usually, the smaller teams gets ignored and the guys have little or no idea about them and hence dont' speak about it or when they do, they say wrong things) but today that wasn't the case, and unlike others, I'm not just gonna continuously blame them and am willing to see that they have made some improvements recently and that the level of knowledge has gone 'up a notch or two' which is pleasant to see.
I'm not gonna get into more detail, but there was many signs of 'promise' today for those who actually paid attention and weren't just dismissing this team on their past behaviour and level of knowledge and competency.
Compare the quality of the commentary in 2nd leg to 1st leg, and you will see a BIG BIG difference.

The commentary today was a hell of a lot better than during the first leg. When there was downtime during this match, of which there was very little, Ray and Phil would talk about our history. Not the freaking Bundesliga. Save that trash for the breakroom. When commentating a game and there's downtime, don't talk about something completely unrelated to the game. Talk about the history of the teams involved. Their stadium, their legends, whathaveyou.
Kelly is a junk PBP guy. I hate to tell another guy that he sucks at his job, but he does. Ray and Phil made he and the other guy look like amateurs today. I hope they do the Zagreb-Bremen match tomorrow. If they pull out information about the Dinamo players, we'll really know that they take their job seriously and aren't doing things (Ray especially), just to be a clown and have a good time on national TV. I was glad they knew their stuff, and I was glad that they were on this broadcast. Just because I knew I wouldn't spend time laughing at their ineptitude.

Totally agree mate, Knowledge is the key, but thats why i had to post to defend the guys on Gol, the knowledge in the 2nd leg that I just watched the repeat of today was very good, Not even just for the major players, Ray and Phil through good research or something even knew their obscure players.
I myself am a Lille fan, so i know the Toulouse players pretty well, the the information they were giving out on lesser known players was Impressive.
I have watched Gol Tv for a while now mostly La Liga and deep knowledge is not something the guys at Gol impress me with, but I am fair, and I will admit during this game, they did, and if they can keep up with the good team knowledge, I'd be impressed and a happy viewer.
And I look forward to future matches hopefully with the same level of team knowledge.
Well done Phil and Ray keep up the good work is what I say.
