Just wanted to get the discussion on the Pompey game going.

My prediction..... Scholes will be key

United 2 Pompey 1 (Carrick, Nani and Benjani for Arry's boys)

We at least need the badges. And change the thread title to the proper format, "Portsmouth v Manchester United, August 15 [R]".

Newbies, They're so quick to jump into the mix they throw etiquette straight out the door..

LOL I was trying to figure out how to send a PM to say thanks and forgive the rookie. But, let's make it official: I apologize for ignoring the etiquette. Thanks for covering for me (feel like a kid writing lines on the board as punishment)

Now, let the discussions begin.

I admire the initiative, but what a horrible thread starter.

With regards to the match, this will show what this team is about. Sort of a bogey team, missing the talisman and coming off a disappointing (by our standards) match. If we are champions then we will be counted in Portsmouth.

I agree. I'm looking for the boys to come out looking for blood. One of the things that marked last season, was whenever suffering a blip, the team usually came out firing the next week. Pompey's defense was terrible last week. Derby opened them up at will. If we can't do the same, SAF will need to step back and take a long look at what's going on.

This is also a perfect opportunity for Tevez to come into the side and make his mark.

pompey were playing a 3 5 2 against derby, if they stick to that against us then they will be overwhelmed. We will also have 5 midfielders (essentially and our fullbacks should be rushing forward.

The above link is the thread from last time we played them when Rio scored the own goal amid the mix up with VDS. The discussion was very interesting. Bottom line is Pompey strengthened. This will be a tough game as we will be tested on both ends of the field.

indeed. we weren't poor on Sunday we just didn't get a good amount of shots off and on target and the ones we did the keeper got 'round to them. i see all of those missteps righted against Pompey.

Tevez with a hat trick :D

Actually we had over 20 shots, but very few of much quality. And their keeper had a pretty good game.

Exactly. We have to show some intent in this match, and show that even without Rooney we are a potent force - because we are. We did everything except put the ball in the back of the net against Reading, but ask last year's Arsenal if that means a damn thing.

The goals must come, against a very good Pompey side. They got off to a shaky start against Derby (I know, my fantasy side got f**ked because of it). But they are a strong outfit, and have only gotten better this summer with the likes of Muntari (awesome), Utaka, Distin, etc. We have to get in.

I'm hoping a 2-0 win.

My fantasy side got screwed by pompey as well.

Pompey, Chelsea (giving up 2 goals), and Manchester United, provided the misery for my Fantasy team.

well that's the thing... we need quality shots and Marcus just had "one of those games" that opposing keepers seem to have at OT.

I will take a 1-0 on Wednesday as we do not have the best record against the sailors...

There has to be some kind of attacker on the bench so perhaps it would have been better if the likes of Brandy (who looks nifty) who is in Malaysia was in Manchester.

I would go with:

-------------------------VDS------------------------------
-----------------Rio-------------Vidic-----------------------
Brown-------------------------------------------------Evra
----------------------Hargreaves-------------------------
----------------------Carrick---------------------------
Ronaldo----------------------------------------------Nani
-----------------Giggs--------------------------------
--------------------------------Tevez---------------------

We will probably see Scholes for Hargreaves, Evra I hope is not injured from the tackle on Sunday, I want to see Nani start because he was arguably out best player on Sunday, I would like to see Saha start with Tevez, ot at least get an appearance since he is back in full training but that probably wont happen.

So I was just reading this article on Soccernet (Tevez to take over Rooney role (http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id=452718&cc=5901)), but have still been wondering exactly how how your team will look without Rooney for a few months. Granted, you've dealt with it before.

Do you think you'll pretty much be fielding the same lineup with the same tactics as last year, with Tevez in for Rooney? I always thought Tevez was a pretty similar player to Rooney anyway.
