First game was 1978. Sat in the upper deck. My dad took the whole family.

I was there when Roberto Cabanas scored the greatest ever goal at the Swamp, a backwards scissors kick. Absolutely brilliant.
Birkenmeier and Eski sit near us nowadays (just next in the more expensive seats)...:)

Your question is really about age. If you are a soccer fan and you lived in the NY region during the heyday of the Cosmos, chances are you followed the Cosmos.
Anyone else still have their Cosmos Kickers pin? :)
Its more interesting to me when we discover that some of our more hardcore supporters followed other NASL clubs.
Would be a bit silly, I suppose, if you were born after the demise of the Cosmos for one to claim to be a Cosmos fan.
I'm not a "former" Cosmos fan. When I run into the former players I'm always awe-shucks. Had my photo taken with Rick Davis last week and felt like I was fourteen again. :o
That's why I don't want another team here to ever go by that name. Its in the past. I strongly believe the legacy of the Cosmos needs to be celebrated, not bashed as it has been through the MLS revisionist view of the NASL. But for an MLS team to ever try to recapture the magic that was through some kind of rebirth (as so many argue for) seems to me already a dozen years too late.
Cosmos->MetroStars->Red Bulls. To my mind, if you're new to supporting the New York Red Bulls, and didn't follow another NASL side back in the '70s or '80s, then that's your supporters lineage, the legacy of fandom that you inherit.
Sometimes it feels like we're suffering now for the alleged sins of the past; some kind of footballing karmic retribution where we've had to pay for the gross excesses and triumphs enjoyed with the NASL by enduring such frustrating mediocrity and underachievement with MLS.
Of course, that really bites for the crowd who have only known the MLS. They don't yet know how wonderful it is to cheer champions.
Soon...

I always like soccer. I went to one game that the Cosmos played when I was young. It was a great experience but I really didn't know the game that well at the time. When my son played in a rec soccer league I got to know the game and appreciate more. I became a metrostar fan about 1998. Also I got caught up in the world cup fever then. I now consider myself a true fan of the game. Let the ny team by any name win some hardware for the fans.

I probably attended ONE game during my childhood. Had a Cosmos pennant on my wall.
I only support one club team however in this country, and it ain't the Cosmos.

Cosmos!
I grew up in the 70s in a family where we all played soccer, and went to a bunch of Cosmos games, and watched the games on channel 9. I cried watching Pele's last game on ABC.

I remember being thirteen and leaving the company of girls in my class to get home to watch the Cosmos play the California Surf. :o It it wasn't for the folding of the NASL I would never have discovered the joys of sex.

I really hope that isn't true, because that might mean you have been pretty lonely for the last 12 years

That was a side volley that he got with his ankle that was well over his head.
