Well stated DMB, this shows you're a leader, hope you are USMNT captain soon.

Pleading for DMB to gain a USMNT captaincy right now might be a bit of a stretch.

But having said that, it's great to see him having an instant impact with Rangers, at least in August. :)

Personally, Beasley is my favorite player but i really dont see him as a leader as in organizing a team and all that. He is a more laid back in the shadows kind of guy. A couple captain choices to me are Bocanegra,Onyewu,or Donovan

Um, Onyewu can't even be counted on to stay on the field for the full 90. Is this who you would really like to see as captain? I would think Cherundolo or Donovan would be better choices.

Thanks. I needed a laugh.:)

Maybe he can be our left-side only captain?

Donovan couldn't captain a sail boat.

That was pretty damn funny but what do you mean? He played fine with it against Ecuador. Do you mean he cant lead his teammates or what? I think he can do it

Why do you say that? He has never been shown a red except in the game against Guatemala when the ref was crooked. Ruiz did the same thing to Donovan that Onyewu did to the random player and Gooch gets a yellow and the ref didnt even calla foul on Ruiz.

any player who needs a captain to LEAD him or provide direction isn't the sort of player i really want...

captains are way over rated....

does dempsey need a captain ....give me 11 dempseys and forget the captain idea

I will take my one Dempsey who plays defense over your eleven Dempseys.

i want dempseys approach to the game in MY 11 players...

does he need a captain or leader to motivate his play....??

i want 11 leaders....

that's the aspect of dempsey i want...skill is a different matter....

although is usa ever could play clockwork orange, then i'd still want dempsey's mentality in the 10 field players

I think the captain should be the player with the highest work rate, so I nominate....

I love Demps as much as the next guy...but he was on mental PTO during the Gold Cup. I thought he was poor, but he seemed to get a free pass, I gue

I love Demps as much as the next guy...but he was on mental PTO during the Gold Cup. I thought he was poor, but he seemed to get a free pass. I guess because we still won the tourney. But I thought that showed that he doesn't bring it EVERY game despite his reputation for doing just that.

Not trying to be contradictory, I'm just curious why the double standard is there.

I don't think he has the leadership abilities. Perfect example was Galaxy v DC last night. You saw what true leadership is when Beckham came on the field...Landon's idea of leadership appears to be shrugging his shoulders or throwing his arms up in the air when decisions go against him.

Also, if i were Bradley, Donovan wouldn't even be guaranteed a starting sport with USMNT until he proves he can do what we all know he can. His performances over the past year or so have been lackluster to say the least.

Donovan has the ability to be a great player, and at times has shown he is a great player - showing this one out of 5 games doesn't work for me though, and at the moment i would sit him on the USMNT bench until he gets it that he needs to perform to keep his place.

I've been accused many times of being a Donovan hater on these boards, but you know what - truth is, i actually do not dislike Donovan, in fact i have his name on the 2002 WC shirt (by the way i am Scottish, not even American), i just think that he doesn't give his all becuase he knows he is one of the first people on the team sheet.

I believe that dropping him from a couple of games will bring the best out of him.

p.s Bocanegra has the qualities for captaincy and should keep it!

Yes he is not alone in being outraged at this crap, but he is one of the few in European football who have spoken out about it. He is a black man in Scotland, and an American at that. Those are two major strikes against him. If you think I'm exaggerating the American bit, read this article:

http://www.yanks-abroad.com/content.php?mode=extratime&id=3284

He is also somewhat unproven and brand new to the team.

It is so rare for an athlete to put together coherent, sensible thought that I forget from time to time that there are exceptions.

These quotes reflect someone who has a grip on reality, knows how to confront it in clear and uncertain terms, but can also do it in a way that doesn't burn proverbial bridges. Even if the bridges are to UEFA and FIFA and even by extension the USSF itself.

Not afraid to speak out when people (a lot of people) would rather he just shut up.

In other words, a leader. Would that make him a good captain, not necessarily, but what special quality does he not possess that Biancovan, Boca, Conrad et al do?
