$7m Bresciano joins City
August 07, 2007
AUSTRALIA midfield player Mark Bresciano has sealed a move from from Serie A side Palermo to English Premier League club Manchester City, it has been reported today.
The 27 year-old becomes the ninth signing of new City boss Sven-Goran Eriksson, for a reportedof $7.2 million.
"I needed this move to freshen me up," Bresciano told a Sydney newspaper.
"I needed a new challenge and I wanted to get the excitement factor back into my game."
Bresciano, who signed a four-year deal with the club, joins a host of Socceroos stars in the Premier League including Mark Viduka (Newcastle United), Tim Cahill (Everton), Harry Kewell (Liverpool), Brett Emerton (Blackburn Rovers ), Lucas Neill (West Ham United) and Mark Schwarzer (Middlesbrough)
Bresciano spent eight seasons in Italy with Empoli, Parma and Palermo, and said the chance to play under former England boss Eriksson, who was also coach of Serie A side Lazio, is a huge incentive.
"He's a big reason I've decided to switch to a new competition - he was very keen to make it happen," said Bresciano.
Eriksson has had a busy (northern) summer after already splashing out on Martin Petrov, Elano, Gelson Fernandes, Rolando Bianchi and Geovanni Deiberson, while is reported today to be chasing Hearts' Scotland international goalkeeper, Craig Gordon.
One word comes to mind with this signing.

A very decent player to have on-board with his goalscoring record as a midfielder and his versatility. Nothing on the official site yet but hopefully soon!

The move just hasn't actually happened and it's strange to see that the Australian press is publishing that. Manchester City apparently backed away from its original offer, and Palermo won't accept anything less. I actually do hope everything works out for Mark, but there has been no deal on either side yet. Bresciano is still with the team in training and the club is preparing for him to remain in Palermo.

Bresciano abandons City move Tuesday 7 August, 2007
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mark Bresciano was on the verge of completing a £5.4m Manchester City move, but this evening Palermo announced they pulled the plug.
“Manchester City really want Bresciano, but the more time goes on, the more convinced I am nothing will come of it,” said director of sport Rino Foschi on the official Palermo website.
The Australian midfielder was all set to be Sven Goran Eriksson’s latest big name signing of the summer until the surprise denouement.
“There are not the right conditions to reach an agreement, even if we tried to make the player happy. It’s difficult to see another ending to this, so the player should meet us at training from tomorrow.
“Bresciano had asked us a while back for this experience in England, but he is nonetheless content at Palermo and is more ready than ever to work with Coach Stefano Colantuono, even if he may be a little bitter.”
It’s believed the transfer crumbled when Manchester City insisted on spreading the £5.4m over a number of instalments starting from September.
The Rosanero wanted all the cash upfront to pour back into the transfer market and so the two clubs abandoned negotiations this evening.
“City are not respecting the initial terms of our agreement. The economic plan they proposed today is not the same we had dictated and if the club does not make a step backwards before this evening is over, I will no longer give my blessing to the transfer. We are not willing to wait any longer. Rules must be respected,” continued Foschi.
Bresciano was born in Melbourne of Italian heritage and has been playing in the peninsula since 1999, when he was just 19.
He spent three seasons with Empoli in Serie B before the step up to Parma in 2002-03 and joined Palermo last summer.
The Australian international netted six goals in 34 top flight appearances for the Sicilians.
“Bresciano should be grateful to the club, because they gave him the opportunity to follow this dream. It was not our fault it didn’t come true. I am sure Mark will work hard like the professional he is.”

Another reason not to believe everything until it has been made 100% official! I'm disappointed but we have to move on. We should sign someone else to sort of 'replace' Bresciano and I'm hoping that the rumours about us after Manuel Fernandes are true. I thought the Bresciano deal was taking way to long to complete. But I wouldn't be surprised if this deal was re-discussed at the end of the transfer window - i.e. last few hours of August 31st.

I'm a bit suprised that we are insisting on installments, but alas 50 million of spending is tough to swallow all at once.
I thought we were set on Wingers until this rumour came about, but I'd feel just as confident with Fernandes in our center.
Eventually we could have an all Fernandes midfield with Gelson, but I think MJ is our future in the CM spot.

Marco breshciano can play as a winger on either the right or left, he is a very versatile player.he has played some of his best football in wide positions

Sven still hopes for Aussie
City aim to agree deal for Bresciano
By Mark Buckingham Last updated: 9th August
Sven Goran Eriksson hopes Manchester City's bid to sign Mark Bresciano is still alive.
The Australia international has been training with City as he looks to secure a move from Palermo.
But the Italian club revealed earlier in the week that the deal has stalled after claiming City had reneged on the original agreement.
City boss Eriksson is refusing to give up on the transfer, but concedes it is unlikely to be revived in time for the season opener against West Ham United on Saturday.
"I hope it is still alive, but there were some problems," said Eriksson on Sky Sports News.
"He was here, he trained with us and he's a very, very good player. We knew that before, of course.
Still alive
"I hope it's still alive and I hope, at the end, he will play for us.
"Today's Thursday, so I think it's difficult to do something before the game against West Ham on Saturday, but I should welcome it if it happens."
Eriksson is also in the market for a goalkeeper after losing No.1 Andreas Isaksson for six weeks to injury.
The Sweden international has fractured a thumb, leaving Eriksson with Joe Hart as his current option for Saturday's game with West Ham.
When asked if Hart would start at Upton Park, Eriksson replied: "If you wait until this afternoon, or tomorrow morning, I will tell you.
"We are working on solutions here, so I'm not quite sure about it today.
"We have only two goalkeepers in this moment. We know Isaksson is away for around six weeks, so maybe it's something we have to do."

Palermo are eyeing Manchester City striker Darius Vassell.
The England international is expected to be made available by City boss Sven Goran Eriksson as he continues his squad overhaul this summer. Tgcom says Palermo are keen to discuss Vassell's situation, which could lead to a breakthrough over stalled negotiations for Mark Bresciano, who has seen a move to City break down this week.

He has already trained with our squad and passed a medical so we should still be favourites to get him. I think it'll be wrapped up next week as all that needs agreeing is the fee and Sven is definitely very interested in him so I hope we can get him in.
