Russian businessman buys Chelsea

Chelsea football club has agreed to be bought by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich in a deal which values the club's shares at £59.3m.
The deal was finalised on Tuesday evening following talks with Chelsea chairman Ken Bates.

Mr Abramovich is offering 35 pence a share and has agreed to buy just more than half the shares of Chelsea Village - the company which owns the football club.

He will also have to look after the football club's debts, which BBC Business Editor Jeff Randall said stood at about £80m.

"We are delighted to agree this deal to acquire what is already one of the top clubs in Europe," Mr Abramovich said in a statement.

"We have the resources and ambition to achieve even more given the huge potential of this great club."

Wide interests

Mr Abramovich is one of the major shareholders in Sibneft, one of Russia's largest oil companies, and "a keen follower of sport and international football," a statement said.

In addition he has significant interests in Russia's aluminium industry, a stake in the Russian airline Aeroflot and owns half of the Moscow TV company.

BBC Business Editor Jeff Randall said the TV interests were significant, "as in the modern game today TV rights are what it's all about."

"Football has been in terrible trouble in this country recently - it's clocked up huge debts and the transfer market has collapsed," Mr Randall said.

"I think what this could signal is the arrival of overseas sugar-daddies.

"If this is the start of the super-rich invaders it'll be very, very interesting to see how the fans react to it."

'Disgraceful' deal

One Chelsea fan told the BBC he was shocked by the news.

"I think it's disgraceful because I always thought that Ken Bates was Mr Chelsea."

But Mr Bates said the deal would help the club.

"This is a great deal for Chelsea Village, the club and its fans," he said in a statement.

"In today's highly competitive football market, the club will benefit from a new owner with deeper pockets to move Chelsea to the next level.

"I look forward to working with Roman Abramovich to achieve even greater things."

Does this clear Chelseas huge debts???
If so,They might be entering the transfer market and making a serious effort in the champions league.

It should clear all debts.

We were widely reported-and the AGm meetings generally supported this-to be about 80-90 million in debt.Added to this is the Euro Bond payment that is due in 2007, which is for another 70 million.

It has long been though that CV/Bates would renegotiate the Euro Bond because of the existing debt of the club.
This, it would seem, is now no longer necessary.

He is supposed to be a football lover and i'm sure if this is true he will want the club to be successful. The only way to do that is to have quality on the pitch...er, field for you other lot ;)...and this will mean that the addition of a player or 2 will be necessary.
Chelsea finished 4th with a tiny squad last season, of which 7 have now been let go thus far, so the nucleus is there for future success.

Harry Kewell would look good in Blue :)

According to Sky sports not only is Bates staying on, but, so is managing director Trevor Birch as well.

Bates is now 70 years old so it could be one of those stay on for a while to show the ropes type of deals.

Not necessarily. The Russian guy just bought 50.09 percent of the outstanding shares of the PLC, and because Chelsea Village is a public company, other shareholders will be given an opportunity to cash in.

In other words, this guy takes over Chelsea Village and possibly could take it private. In either case, he assumes the debt. Whether he clears the debt is another matter.

When I read the article over at soccernet, the description of how this guy made his money positively SCREAMED "Russian mobster." If I were a Chelsea fan, I'd be extremely worried.

I'm not worried. This should be a positive move for CFC.

Kewell might be a better fit with Liverpool. I certainly don't envision Chelsea matching a lucrative offer from Liverpool.

You must not have seen the Sopranos episodes where Tony's crew took over the sporting goods store.

Gangsta gangsta! Money launderer buys the Blues!

It's an incredible piece of business when you consider Ken Bates bought the filthy Blues for £1 in the 80's. He's made an £18mil profit (or £17,000,000 if you're feeling pedantic.)

Interesting fact; In the 1970's, the British Government paid Ken Bates to leave the British Virgin Islands to prevent a coup. He was that hated!
