View Full Version : Should Ronaldo be taking free-kicks??

Everytime he goes to line-up for a free-kick, he does his little ritual (the chest huffpuff thingy), starts running, then... smacks it right into the wall. Almost 100% of the time he does that now. The only goal I remember him scoring from a free-kick was in the match VS World all-stars @ Old Trafford.
I think he is far more valuable in the box, using his head. Maybe it could be Tevez and Giggs on the set-piece now??
I think he will improve his kicking as time goes on, but right now.. They just aren't coming off.
Your thoughts?

Maybe its time to mix 'em up on those from wide positions too? He had one today from what I remember that was driven into Cech's arms although nobody really attacked the ball.
Overall though, the man from Mancunia, he say 'yes', (sometimes).

Hell no. He should only take them when they're in his 'zone'. About 30 yards out, dead in the middle.

Maybe, atleast he shouldn't be taking the close up ones which are likely to hit the wall by the way he hits them? He could take the longer distance ones, with Tevez/Giggs lining up for the shorter range ones.
Edit: Oops, I accidently voted yes!

Tevez/Rooney/Hargreaves/Giggs from near.
Ronaldo from the side, ala Anfield.
The 35 yarders, I'd like to see Carrick to serve these in.

His conversion rate must be dreadful. We've given him the chance and it hasn't worked out, with few exceptions. Next, please.

Carrick gets some wicked curve on them doesn't he!
He looks so elegant when he strikes the ball, it's like his leg is in slow motion.

Fine then who should tell the best player in the world that he will no longer be allowed to take free-kicks. Who are we going to stick that on?

There are plenty of players who are able to deliver set-pieces better than Ronaldo. Who is also, in my opinion, not the best player in the world. Apparently Portugal's coach Big Phil thinks so too.

I only want to see long ones from him. The shot he took today is okay because it is 35 yards out.
For closer range one's, i rather see Giggs or others try it (Hargreaves?)
The one from the side is okay with too. He can deliver them consistently with pace into the box.
It's the close range shots that hit the wall 9 out of 10 times that I don't want to see him take. Especially in pressure situation, he balloon those ALL THE TIME. It looks like he hit them better when there is nothing at stake.

Rooney takes a pretty nice free kick from 20-25 yards out. Gets it over the wall and curves it. Maybe not quite as accurate as Giggs, but with more pace on the ball.

Juninho's better than Becks at free kicks fwiw.
I also voted no. With Giggs, Rooney, Tevez & Hargreaves in the squad to take them Ronaldo shouldn't be taking many.

Does anybody know actual statistics? I have heard that Juninho only converts 1/6th of the dead balls taken. That would mean Ronaldo is not that far off. In fact, I can only round up proof of five free kick goals this last season for Juninho, in all competitions. And he is the ONLY free kick taker for Lyon. Ronaldo shares with Giggs.
I'm not saying Ronaldo is better, not at all. I'm just saying he's not as bad as so many people say. Free kicks are just tough.

Juninho isn't the only fk taker. While he does take most of them (70% I would say), Kallstrom, Toulalan, and Ben Arfa are responsible for the remaining 30%. Even Malouda took them every once in a while.
Juninho is called Mr. 50-50 because one out of every two free kicks are on target. In fact, it's a running joke that it's easier for him to score from free kicks than penalties (he takes both at Lyon). Last year was a particularly poor year for him (as it was for the entire team), but despite scoring only five fks, he was responsible for 63% of Lyon's goals last year due to corners and free kicks.
