It seems Smith is going.

NEWCASTLE United are closing in on the signings of Manchester United's Alan Smith and Brazil international Cacapa after confirming they are in discussions with both players.

The Magpies have agreed terms with the Old Trafford club for Smith and are currently in discussions with the England star.

And Newcastle are also in talks with former Lyon captain Cacapa.

Toon boss Sam Allardyce said: "Cacapa is a top player and we will be delighted if we can pull this off as we regard him as a big capture.

"Our fans should not be put off by the fact they may not have heard of Cacapa because he has certainly been heard of in Brazil and France.

"He has been captain of Lyon for the past five years and for every one of those five years they have won the French title, so obviously he has a lot of Champions League experience.

"That's why we are hoping everything goes OK with his medical and we can agree a deal with his people because he would be a terrific capture for us."

Cacapa, 31, won no fewer than 10 major medals during his time with Lyon, including five Ligue 1 championships. He has also been capped three times for Brazil.

On Smith, Big Sam added: "I am hoping that the Alan Smith deal will go through on Thursday.

"He has other clubs to consider and I am hoping we are top of his list," he told the Evening Chronicle.

Would we really sell Smith and Rossi inside a week if:

a) we weren't 100% confident in Tevez being here within the week, and;

b) we weren't bringing in another striker?

A offerr has been accepted for him, perhaps from more than one club.
The rossi thread was also started after we accepted a bid for him.

Paid 7 million for him in 2004 (which would be about 7.5 today).

Apparently selling him for 6 million in 2007.

I'd say that is a pretty good deal...got 2+ years out of him for 1.5 million.

Again wew are offloading a player who in my oppinion got a very raw deal here. He came here, did just about everything that you could expect him to do and probably more. He had an injury, shit happends... The way we moved him to midfield for a season and then back again is what stings me most. He showed incredible loyalty and determination then.

I'm not saying anyone is to blame. He was a victim of circumstance. He could have played well in an ordinary 442, but instead we went in another direction and all of a sudden he did no longer fit in the team. It's the right thing for everyone that he goes. I just wish we could have give as much to him as he did to us.

If he decides to go I will always love Alan for his time here. I havn't a bad word to say about him other than that he just didn't fit in anymore...

I'm going to miss him, but it's good for everyone that he move on.

Smudger. . .

Well, Heinze certainly does not want to stay at the club and from all accounts, neither did Rossi. As for Smudge, as long as we get someone as replacement, I wouldn't mind losing him at all.

I'm not sure I like this trend of saying that if a player isn't more than happy to play for scraps, often not even making the bench, then they don't want to be at United. It's putting them between a rock and a hard place, quite frankly. Both Smith and Heinze had raw deals related to injuries, and Rossi, as has been said, had Rooney and possibly Tevez in front of him. That's a fact of life I suppose. I just think all three players, had they been treated properly, could have fulfilled proper roles at the club.

Oh well, that's why he's Sir Alex and I'm not. I really hope he can prove me wrong with Anderson, Nani, and Tevez.

Alan Smith, Alan Smith, Alan Alan Smith. Not a great goalscorer, but a scorer of great goals. Fare thee well.

It's not like he's gonna be first choice up at St. James either... not really sure about this move for him tbh...

edit: they want him to play attacking mid/ replace dyer... i guess he will be first XI but for me that isn't his best position...

About Heinze, his repeated desire to move to the scum ensures that he has no place in our colours anymore.
As for Rossi, Fergie has said that he repeatedly promised that Rossi will get PT this season. He wants first-team action to push on towards making the Azzurri NT, in such a scenario, what has happened is in the best interest of all parties.
As for Smith, IMO he does not have the quality to be a starter here. And no-one wants him to leave. Again though, from his perspective, it makes more sense to be a starter in a mid-table team. Newcastle though wont be the right destination.

I don't think the club has given a raw deal to anyone except possibly Rossi. We have to be ruthless if we have to keep winning trophies in this era.

Considering Heinze played very medicore last year and got destroyed in the CL how did he get a raw deal?

Smith needed to leave. He just wasn't all that great and his money can go else where.

Actually, he might be it depends. Big Sam likes his target men, Viduka, Smith, I think Eggert was rumored to be in for N'Zogbia...so
