I know everyone is focused on this weekend's clashof number 1 and number 2, but next weekend the Freedom travel to Carolina to play and all indications are for a sellout. Now thew new stadium is 10,000 or 12,000 I bleieve so this would be close to a doubling of attendance. Might be significant that Mia is playing again in NC but its good to see a WUSA game garnering attendance approaching some of the MLS teams.

4,002 Ouch! That's not all that bad, considering.

It was a game between the two worst teams in the league, neither with much hope of making the playoffs, in a game that meant nothing.

It could have been worse.

I was there yesterday, and I think that total is low. Maybe Villanova is counting paid admissions only and not comps, but it seemed like there were around 8,500 yesterday, what with it being Girl Scout sleepover night.

"It was a game between the two worst teams in the league, neither with much hope of making the playoffs, in a game that meant nothing."

AND star players for both teams were missing for the US-Norway friendly.

(I do hope the league and the USSF can do a better job of coordinating schedules next year. Hey, a guy can dream.)

I'm guessing that number included no-shows, as there's no way there were anywhere near 8,384 people actually there. I bet a bunch of folks bought tickets to see Mia, and then didn't bother to attend when they found out Mia wouldn't be there.

Considering what - that half the people who were there got in on free tickets?

This league should do more doubleheaders with MLS to boost attendance.

Considering that there wasn't a whole lot to attract fans to this game except free tickets.

What is needed is reasonably sized stadia where fans can feel part ot the game. Piggybacking on an MLS match makes for a very long afternoon of soccer for fans of both leagues. There are some cost savings, but there is also some revenue that is not gained by one organization or other.

Right now, people don't want to go see womens soccer. The WUSA needs to find a way to get a fan base. That could start with advertisments, youth games before pro games, or double headers with the US national team. Also teaming up with MLS teams would be a good idea. Another reason people don't watch WUSA games on TV is because they are on at exactly the same time as MLS games, and right now people would rather watch MLS more than WUSA. With a few smart moves, the WUSA could totally increase in popularity because of the many young supportive girls that play soccer.

How does 2002 attendance compare to previous years?

previous years?Obviously someone who has been closely following the one-year old league. ;)

Last year's 84 game season averaged 8,104. Washington led the way (14,421) on the strength of an inaugural match crowd of 34,148 and one or two DCU doubleheaders.

The overall average is down 17%, although San Diego has improved. Atlanta (11,092 last year) moved to a smaller stadium (15,011) so they won't have the 20K blockbusters to boost their average.

I would expect the average to creep up during these final 3 weeks although the Wednesday night matches will hurt. And then there's New York. :(
