I was thinking and watching games on tv. I know that a normal offside call is right near the 2LD so the placement of the ball is not that important. Where do you call the offside? at the player, or that the 2ld. Lets say a kid is at the 18, and the 2LD is at the half line. As the AR, do you run to that place of the infraction, then raise your flag?

Im just usure of where the restart would actually be. I've never seen it. But what woul;d you do as the AR?? would you hold your flag at the 2LD, or run to the offside attacker?

The LOTG state that an indirect free kick takes place by the opposing team taken from the place where the infringement occurred. This is when the attacker either plays the ball, interferes with play, interferes with opponent, or gains an advantage. The AR is usually in line with the 2nd to last defender, not where the player was when the ball was kicked or where the ball was kicked from, unless the ball is closer to the goal than the next to last defender. The AR will raise the flag at his position and this is where the restart usually is...
Often its near the 2nd to last defender, and that is where I have always had the restart, but could be wrong...

Raise your flag, wait for the center's attention, then move to the spot of the restart (where the attacker was when the ball was played).

Good answer...now the next one for you:

On a play where the AR holds the flag waiting for involvement should the AR hold position at the point of the potential infraction or just mark the spot in his/her mind and continue to follow the play? I waffle between the two reactions depending on the situation but this probably isn't correct. I'm sure this is covered in the instructions to referees or decisions of the board but I'm looking for a quick answer before I start reviewing for my re-cert. Thanks in advance.

I move with the play until I decide to signal. I don't want to have to catch up, especially when it's a long ball and there is a good chance of needing to chase down a breakaway and get to the goal line with the shot.

Well the AR should stay with the ball if holding the flag looking for involovement... When the decision is made, then signal the flag. However, if I hold the flag then I don't run back upfield. Its where the attacker infringed the law...

I think my earlier post was a confusing circle... I read it and disagreed with it, then realized I was the one who made the post... need to only reply in the AM... sorry:o

aspire. i see you have realized that your first response was incorrect. the spot for the restart is the place where the offside player was at the instant the ball was last played by his teammate. his involvement may occur yards away from that spot, but we come back to that spot for the restart.

if you are holding a flag waiting for involvement, you need to do two things; remember where the restart spot will be if you need to flag the infraction, and keep up with play in case the infraction does not need to be called.

Ding ding ding, we have a winner.

The Additional Instructions in the extended version of the Laws of the Game - the part that USSF decided not to publish - says, "When an offside offence occurs, the referee awards an indirect free kick to be taken from the position of the offending player when the ball was last played to him by one of his team mates."
