It wasn't for that much money. I think we are talking about 12-15 euros.

Even thats a bit hard to believe. We're talking about Bayer here, not Bayern.

They've never spent that much money on a player.

If that's the case, Flamengo's directors are lying to the media and the fans. 30 mil euros was the release fee they had set on him, but I knew they weren't going to get that. Palermo offered 13 earlier in the year and got shot down. If it turns out to be any lower than that, I'll be PISSED.

Exactly. I think Lucio is still their "record transfer" and he cost them 8.5M.

30m obviously seemed high, but its what was quoted where I found it. Now I can find the link again.

Bayer have confirmed the deal. 5 year contract. The media speculates the fee is around 10 million euros (6 million to Flamengo, 4 million to some investors).

I thought it was that Franca guy.

Anyways, this is a great deal For Leverkusen. Some of the Flamengo fans here spoke very highly of him.

Exactly why I said "I think". It means I am not certain.

C'mon, € 10 million for a 20 year old guy is "cheap" in your eyes? My club had paid € 4 million for the Boca Juniors playmaker Federico Insua (who was also national player at that time) 2 years ago...

The company doesn't back them anymore.

Where did you get that from? I heard that the Bayer AG abandoned all other sport compartments like basketball, handball & athletics in order to fully concentrate on soccer ... what would mean that they can invest even more in the club now!

I heard that they cut back on the football team as well.

Yep. Compared to players who aren't as talented as him and the price tag they were sold at it, 10 million was a bargain.

See: William (Shakhtar, 13-14 mil euros), Ilsinho (Shakhtar, 11 mil euros) to name a few

The difference is, that Renato Augusto is known as one of the biggest playmaker talents in Brazil. He has some years first team experience and good skills.

If he can adapt quickly Leverkusen made a real good transfer.

Actually no they're not putting big money into the football club. The club is mostly going on what it earns. It has been self-sufficient for quite awhile now.

The word I got is that they cut back on the other sports because they weren't generating anything, not to concentrate solely on football.

Sure, Bayer still does "back" the club, but not to the extent it has in the past.

So, I used the wrong wording. My apologies.

That's because Shakhtar has money to burn too.

I read somewhere a year ago that Bayer still gives 15m+ per year to the club, which sounded roughly plausible to me if you look at the range of top 5-8 Bundesliga clubs which they compete with but which generally have a better economic support basis.

Some form of funding for the stadium expansion such as low-rate credits probably can be added to that, given that they are building and buying players all at once.

Dude, Bayern gets more than that from their shirt sponsor. Which is what I was getting at. Many think the company totally bankrolls the club or contributes huge amounts and that isn't true.

Not anymore.

They haven't bought players at any notable amount. But yes, I'm certain you are right that the company's name helps with the stadium funding. However, you have to remember something. I believe Bayer Leverkusen has been in some type of UEFA Competition for 10 of the past 12 years. All this while never really spending big money on big names and cashing in big on guys like Emerson (20M), Lucio (12M), and Ze Roberto (10M).

Ballack isn't on that list because he's the one guy Bayer got low-balled on. I believe he moved to Bayern for a bit over 6M, which sucked for them since they paid over 4M for him. But what happened depends on who you believe. If you believe Bayern sources from back then, Ballack had a buy-out clause.

If you believe the Bayer people from back then, Bayern tapped-up both Ballack and Ze Roberto. Bayer apparently let them go when they both demanded to leave.

I believe the Bayer version myself.

I did not include Juan who also moved for a bit over 6M. But his was a nice return seeing that Bayer only paid somewhere around 3-3.5M for him.

Bayer Leverkusen has always done business intelligently. Which is why I was totally shocked when I heard they paid 5.5M for Stefan Kiessling, but everyone makes mistakes...... ;)

My point was that if anyone can improve on their bandbox of a stadium and buy players without significant corporate backing, it's Bayer Leverkusen.

Their corporate backing certainly isn't anywhere near that VfL Wolfsburg is benefiting from right now........

I'm glad Bayer bought Simak from us for about €7m in 2002 because it basically saved us.

I forgot that mistake. Thanks!! :D

EDIT: And they still were getting substantial backing from the company in 2002.

The same with Federico Insua in Argentina (he was champion & even national player at that time) ... so I can't see such a huge difference.

Btw: How much did Werder pay for Diego?

Yeah, and he sucked here.

6M. And they could sell him for triple that right now.
