So if I said bavaria munich, that'd be the total english version.

I used to think that bavaria was the german word and bayern the english one...

That's because when we speak of the club in English, we don't say "Bavaria Munich", we say "Bayern Munich." No wonder you would be confused.

I still have such a problem with the small translation team we have for BVB. The other two people are Germans and they always want to translate literally. Too many things translated literally from German to English just doesn't make sense.

Trust me, I've had lots of problems trying to teach people in the past that Leverkusen is not in Bavaria, but rather is in Nordrhein-Westfalen and belongs to the Bayer corporation. Especially my fellow Americans. Those my age grew up with Bayer Asprin being the top over-the-counter drug in America and of course, we Americans assume everything great in America is American.

They are many of the same people I know who have been here in Germany, but still assume that the Nuerburgring is near Nuernberg and not up in the Rhein-Eifel area because of the name. :)

And of course, some of them use the free on-line translators and when they see "Bavaria Leverkusen" come up, they swear Leverkusen has to be in Bavaria! LMAO!! :D

Hey that's nothing, most people from America seem to think NZ is IN Australia :p

as always good information..

and for additional information, here are some up-dates (pictures) about Leverkusen in English:

http://www.leverkusen.de/english/Sehenswertes.cfm?men=english

Leverkusen is city of BAYER AG, good soccer club BAYER 04 and it is called sport city (we have many sport activities, not only soccer).

Aspirin is of course BAYER AG, Leverkusen..
people in this small city are proud of this big company.

I think without BAYER company and Bayer 04, they could close Leverkusen as city:)

Leverkusen offer many cultural and sport activities and area of Leverkusen is actually nice green:)

Yeah. Shame about the Bayer Giants (Basketball). Also, not many people know there is also an indoor arena across from the BayArena.

yeah, Bayer Giants are also very good...but it is probably not so popular sport like soccer and Bayer company has no more interest to support it....we will see..

yeah, we have also wonderful soccer hall, indoor soccer hall, super new and cool, close to BayArena....i like it there....

Ahh. Spring break finally, so I'm back ^^

It's a nice sight, to see us in third place. A few questions in general

- in Germany, how is Bayer Leverkusen referrred to? As in, Manchester United is either Man Utd or United to the fans. So what do Bayer Leverkusen call their team? I do know the nickname is the Werkself, are there any other names?

- now that we're third currently, how likely are we to stay there and/or go higher (I live in optimistic hope of course :) ). Looks like Werder's in their late season slump again - any chance they'll do us a favour and continue doing so? *is EVIL*

Cheers :)

Most here simply refer to them as "Bayer."

Werder seem to be in total disarray, but all it takes is one victory to turn that around. What I want to see from Bayer is consistency. This weekend at the Allianz Arena will tell a lot about this Leverkusen team.

Even the best Leverkusen teams have usually gone to Munich and been slaughtered.

Let's see if this team can stop that trend.......

well actually our mascot is lion..Löwe....and we are Löwen-club:)...but it can lead to a
misunderstanding..because Löwen or Lions are 1860 Munich...however we have also Löwen-clubs.....so we are Löwen:)......

sometimes I hear that somebody call us Aspirin club..or rivals from Cologne (my friends) call us Plastik-Club.

but we are Bayer....or Löwen from Nordrhine-Westfalia....or the best team on the Rhine..

see our mascot:

You must call yourselves Loewen. No one else does, no matter what your mascot is. If someone asked me about Loewen clubs, Eintracht Braunschweig would come to my mind before Leverkusen.

Names most other fans use:

Bayer Leverkusen

Bayer

Leverkusen

Names from mostly jealous fans of now floundering former great clubs (Read: 1. FC Koln and others).

Pill Boys/Dope Dealers (Because of the association with Bayer AG)

Plastic Club (Because of the apparent lack of "deep tradition", but in my opinion, "tradition" has to start somewhere. A name other jealous fans also like to use on Wehen, Wolfsburg and Hoffenheim.)

Coke Boys (from the Daum era - "Coke" as in "cocaine")

Neverkusen (from Bayer's constant failure to win a Bundesliga title or any other title at the end of the last decade and the beginning of this one despite clearly being the best team in the league for at least two of those years)

Hosenscheisser or "Pants Shitters" (A bad name used to describe the 2001-2002 Bayer team who threw away the Bundesliga title by losing to relegation candidates FCN on the penultimate Saturday of the season, handing the title to BVB, then lost the German Cup Final to Schalke and topped it all off by losing the Champions' League Final to Real Madrid in Glasgow. I was at the match in Glasgow and really think Bayer might have been the best team in Europe that season. But they have nothing to show for it......)

Those are the ones I know....

well generally we simply say Bayer...it sounds best:)
of course our Cologne Rivals would have another nicknames...:)

I loved your analysis of Bayer name...excellent..

I only hope now that Bayer will finish at least as second in BL - to get Champions league ranking...and I hope we will advance in next round in UEFA cup.....hope we could win UEFA Cup....despite it will be very difficult

our next big game is against BAYERN MUNICH...and if we advance in UEFA Cup and Bayern too, we will meet Bayern again:)

footyfan1 and btleo - great, thanks for the info ^^ It's very helpful indeed.

BTW, am I correct in saying that 1. FC Koln is Bayer's main regional rival? I know they're all part of the Rhine rivalries but FC Koln is the main one, right?

Kiessling? Löw must want someone to hit posts and crossbars while in front of open nets and get credit for others' own goals.

I don't really see much point in it either, because he's got the 4 main strikers set in stone for the euros barring injury.

Unless he's picking these "strikers" for midfield use, like Podolski.

Kiessling's pretty comfortable deeper in the field isn't he?

I actually think he might be thinking of replacing Podolski......

I do think Kiessling is the better overall player of the two, but if I want a goal scored, I'd call Podolski. Even with the slumping Podolski is going through.

He's versatile enough to do that, yes. He isn't your "classic striker." However, we've said before and I'll say again, if Kiessling can learn to be cool in front of the net, he'd be the best German striker out there.

I LOVE Miro Klose, but if Kiessling can just start hitting the back of the net, he'd be the new top dog.

Putrid performance today 2-1 was a flattering result. I thought Sarpei and Adler looked good, the rest not so much.

Truly. Today Bayer looked to be afraid of Bayern.
