Hello, fellow fans! :D I started liking Bayer during (yes, during) the CL Final when they played Real Madrid. I was the only one in the room supporting them. It's funny that I chose Bayer since they were responsible for throwing Man Utd (my first team) out of the CL in the first place but life works in weird ways. ^^ To this day, Schneider, Nowotny and Neuville are my favourite German players.
I also supported the German team in WC 2002 because of the Bayer players (and Ollie Kahn but that's another story). I still support the German team now, as a side note.
Most of the other English-speaking football fans I know support either Werder or Bayern. But I've never liked Bayern, never was interested in them.
Anyway, it's really exciting to see how Michael Skibbe has put together a young team. I don't get to watch much Bayer matches at all but I was very impressed by his decision to place Adler as #1 last year.
I would definitely love having more infomation on Bayer. I'm not German-speaking and info can be quite hard to get in English.
OK that was way too long but yep, that's how I got into Bayer ^^

you are right about Bayer Leverkusen....actually I myself come from Bavaria and all my family was traditionally fan of Bayern Munich..me too...but since I have been living in Leverkusen , I became a fan of Leverkusen....Similar as you I was impressed by their performance in CL..well it is few years ago, but I remember very good at this time...I also love soccer community here...it is absolutely different than in bigger city...mostly Leverkusen
citizens are fans of Leverkusen...it is simply very nice here....Leverkusen is probably only soccer and Bayer Levekusen company (you know Aspirin etc.)...Leverkusen people indentify with their Bayer Cross...and we are happy to get a new stadion in 2009.
I love this team and their fans...I love the atmosphere in the stadium...we have small but very nice stadium.
we have fantastic young team....and recently i read an article in the Sportbild (printed version)..Lothar Matthäus said that Leverkusen plays the most beautiful soccer this season and he wish they would be in Champions League again.
I´m happy we have US fans again....when I visited first time Bayer 04 thread or Bigsoccer, Leverkusen had special thread because many Americans came here..it was the time when Donovan played in Leverkusen...we had many American players: Hejduk, Reyna, Donovan..
I´m happy that new american fans come here..
I will try to provide you with latest information about Bayer 04
I hope you don´t leave early this thread and Bigsoccer
We need you here!!!!!!!

Hello, fellow fans! :D I started liking Bayer during (yes, during) the CL Final when they played Real Madrid. I was the only one in the room supporting them.
Funny! I'm a Dortmund fan, but I was in Glasgow, at that final, supporting Leverkusen!!! Bayer are one of the other German teams I really like!
It's funny that I chose Bayer since they were responsible for throwing Man Utd (my first team) out of the CL in the first place but life works in weird ways. ^^
I'm also a Man U. fan, but they are my second team overall. No one comes before Dortmund with me.
To this day, Schneider, Nowotny and Neuville are my favourite German players.
I can see why!
I also supported the German team in WC 2002 because of the Bayer players (and Ollie Kahn but that's another story). I still support the German team now, as a side note.
With me, Der Nationalmannschaft comes after the USA and England. But since England didn't qualify and the USA isn't European, guess who I'll be supporting at Euro 2008? LOL!! ;)
Most of the other English-speaking football fans I know support either Werder or Bayern. But I've never liked Bayern, never was interested in them.
Before I came to Germany for the first time in 1988, I considered myself a Bayern fan. I'm 41 years old, so I remember the old days of "Soccer Made In Germany" in the heyday of Bayern, Gladbach and Koln.
When I came to Germany and saw what Bayern were about and what many of their fans were like, I realized they were everything I hated about a club. I tried FCN and Kaiserslautern (I lived close to Nuernberg and had other military buddies in Kaiserslautern) before I discovered Borussia Dortmund. Been a BVB fan ever since.
Anyway, it's really exciting to see how Michael Skibbe has put together a young team. I don't get to watch much Bayer matches at all but I was very impressed by his decision to place Adler as #1 last year.
Of course I really like Skibbe as he is a former Dortmund coach. I knew when we fired him that he would still be a great coach, but he just wasn't ready when we gave him our job. I thought he was crazy when he replaced Butt with Adler, but it looks like he was right on the money!
I would definitely love having more infomation on Bayer. I'm not German-speaking and info can be quite hard to get in English.

Not too long at all! "bltleo" and others can tell you about some of my marathon posts in other threads/forums.
And I see "bltleo" has already sent you the info for Bayer's English site. If you like, you can join my BVB e-mail list.
We don't just discuss Dortmund, but news all over the football world, including some of Bayer. Contact me privately if you are interested.

bltleo - nope, I won't be leaving this thread anytime soon, not when I just found you guys!. :> And footyfan1 - I will be emailing you soon. And I'm not american, I'm actually from Asia but I'm studying in NYC.
By the way, I'm very intrigued by Sergej Barbarez. I read that he's been having a few good games recently (till his injury). Can anybody tell me more about him?
Actually, I'd love to have more info on the team in general, especially the younger ones. I'm especially interested in knowing more about Vidal and Adler.
Cheers!

What do you want to know about Barbarez? He's one of my favorite players.

that´s fine....
I will try to give you any up-dates about Barbarez (one of my favorite players at Leverkusen)..and Rene Adler..
Rene Adler belongs to my top favorites ..together with Bernd Schneider..
Rene Adler feels happy in our team and he also like Leverkusen and identify with the team.
for me he is young talented GK and very good candidate for National GK
BTW: Leverkusen produced many top national players...in Sportbild few weeks ago i read an article about: Danke Leverkusen for education Bundesliga players...many players of Bayer
were or are national players - for both senior team or youth team...

footyfan1 - I'm curious as to why he moved to Leverkusen in the first place (and why Leverkusen signed him). Not in a negative sense but he was at his previous club for quite long wasn't he?
In additoin, there was a blog (the offside) that made a passing comment about the Leverkusen fans booing him earlier this season. He's had an upward turn in form lately and I would like to know what made the fans hmm, turn on him? earlier on.
And bltleo - there's a lot of good young German goalikeepers now (would that England can say the same...). Who do you think will be #1 if Lehmann steps down? Is Hildebrand good enough? Or will Rensing or Enke take over?

I'm not Bltleo but my suggestion would be...
Hildebrand(if he starts playing regularly at Valencia) or Enke should be NT keepers for the next 1-2 years.
And in the long term...
should be a three-way battle between Adler, Neuer and Rensing.

I liked Hildebrand when he played with Stuttgart...after he left to Valencia and is not the GK number one, it is difficult to say...I think the GK of German NT should be number one in his team...so i hope that Hildebradt will get his chance there....Generally, I would say that Germany has very good GK´s and promissing young talents...like Rene Adler, Rensing or Manuel Neuer....my favorite from all these young GK is Rene Adler of course....he is probably too young yet for beeing GK number one for Euro 08 ..but I see that that Rene Adler has big chance to become GK number one in the national team in the long term...
For Euro 08 has probably Hildebrand and Enke more chance...they are more experienced...however I would not say that they are better than Adler or Rensing..however for GK of the national team should have some experience ...so we will see probably Hildebrand or Enke as GK number one in Euro 08 if Lehmann will don´t get his chance...it depends of development of Lehmann - if he will play regulary....I personally would see Lehmann in Euro 08 again --

Barbarez left HSV because he had no future there under coach Huub Stevens. Stevens doesn't like any player whose personality is stronger than his own and that certainly made Barbarez the first candidate to go.
Leverkusen signed him because Barbarez played under Skibbe at Dortmund and with Nowotny gone, Ramelow slowing down and Schneider not really being the "leader type", Rudi Voeller and Michael Skibbe realized their team needed a leader on the training pitch and on the field. Sergej Barbarez is that man.

Yup. It was still Doll in charge when Barbarez walked. Hamburg wouldn't give him the length of contract he wanted. Don't think it was a problem with his manager at the time.

Thank you for catching my error. Yes, HSV failed to extend him with Doll still there. I knew that! I don't know why I had Huub Stevens in my head.
I should have remembered that because that is one of reasons I didn't want Dortmund to hire Doll.
