Here's another position paper talking about offside, relating to interfering with play:

BTW, FSC had a reply of the Community Shield final from 2004, and the same type of situation occurred. In the attacking third, Alan Smith charged hard to steal a ball from the defense. The defender attempted to clear it, but the ball bounced right off of Smith and forward. Both Smith and another ManU player rushed to the ball, but the other player stopped just before playing it. At this point the flag went up, but referee Mike Dean, seeing that Smith would be the one to get to the ball, didn't blow the whistle and let play continue. Smith's shot went into the net, and the goal was allowed.

That took some brass ones by the CR. Totally correct, but, man, is it hard to explain waiving off the AR and allowing a goal.

I remember watching this exact play. I argued that the call was incorrect then, despite the announcers claims and that of a fellow referee who was watching the game with me. I feel a little vindication now

Fantastic paper and a double fantastic for the USSF referencing the youtube clip. The incorrect argument is that the keeper could have been distracted by the offside player hence the attacking team gained advantage. That bad argument is one of my LOTG pet peeves.
