I think Runn99 knows all that too. I share his disappointment at the lack of scoring, as I know you do too. But damn....an 1860 defense that shuts out three teams, practically shuts down the hottest team in the 2.BL, takes the millionares of Bayern to 120 mins and conceed a PK?!?!?!?!? All with scrubs who are younger than the planter's wart on my foot??? To that I stand up, applaud and say "bring on next season, baby, 'cause when this team is healthy we are top o'the table!!!!!"
Any care to remember the last time an 1860 defense was soooo stable? Think 1966, 'cause historically we SUCK at defense. Check the table, boys....this defense has allowed the second fewest goals ALL season. In seasons past at this point we had given up 30+ goals....even in 04/05 when we came in 4th. This team is doing it right...we are just snake-bit with injuries. Rmember the last 2 seasons when injuries happened? The rueckrunde was a free fall to near-bottom of the table. The only thing keeping us from going into the kellar were 4 teams utterly worse than we were. Now? Now we have depth. Young depth. Young, fast, signed for the next three years depth. Sound hopeful? do I sound giddy? Damn friggin'r right!!!! I could care less if we get promoted this season. Why? Because I want this team to gel. I want this team to learn, build experience so we are not promoted/relegated in the same 12 month span. I don't want the deep pockets of Bayern to come raiding us too early. I want success....long term success. They type of financial success one only sees in China these days.:D
Enough of this gay banter....I am off to another meaningless 4 hour conference call with some group of guys named Rajiv who have replaced the 2 guys I have been working with for 5 years all because labor is cheaper in Banglore....though there is a far greater chance of beaing eaten by a tiger there than in downtown Chicago....apparently.
Well put. Maybe I was having a glass half-empty kind of day. :D
I think we all know Schroth is out for the season at this point, and I'd frankly be surprised if he can still play at his usual level if or when he returns. A shame, though...

Well, well, well...on the grounds that he has been performing in top form and being an asset to the club, Reuter has renewed Hoffmann's contract for another year. Hmmmmm.....if I were a 22 year-old keeper with my contract about to expire next year and still not considered the #1, I would we wondering what management felt about me. Am I the future? Do they trust me? IMHO sounds like Reuter and Kurz are keeping Hoffmann around as an insurance policy. Let's face it, if they were keeping him around for moral support and as an experience-giver he could do that as keeper coach. Keeping him on the roster at his age says only one thing: "If Tschauner f's up Michi is right here to keep us on course." Tschauner has GOT to feel this one. And with Roessl coming up the rankes Tschauner has got to wonder if he IS the successor to Michi. We will find out in 12 months or less if his contract gets extended.

Nik Ledgerwood and his mates confound the critics and draw Mexico 1-1 last night in LA in CONCACAF Olympic qualifying. Canada has had very little in the way of preparation but step up when it counts. Next up is Haiti, Friday night.

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!
Berkant Goektan is back to health and on the bench against Mainz!!! Now, we are missing 4 players to the U23 duty as well as Ledgerwood. Also, notice Kurz is moving to a 4-1-4-1 formation instead of the 4-2-3-1 we have been using. I hope they adjust to the difference and cover back as they have been doing.
My hope is that 1860 plays Mainz tight and the added player in attack can make the differnce. Of course, I hope Toni and Berki can get an einsatz and put one or two in. ;)
1860: 12 Tschauner - 33 Johnson, 16 Thorandt, 5 Berhalter, 4 Hoffmann - 17 S. Bender - 7 Bierofka, 8 D. Schwarz, 22 L. Bender, 14 Holebas - 24 Kucukovic.
Ersatz: 1 Hofmann (Tor) - 9 Di Salvo, 10 Göktan, 11 Wolff, 23 B. Schwarz, 26 Baumgartlinger, 30 Szukala.
Nicht dabei: 19 Ghvinianidze (Reha nach Außenmeniskusschaden), 21 Schroth (Reha nach Knie-OP), 25 Ledgerwood (Olympia-Quali mit Kanada), 27 Ziegenbein (Muskelprobleme), 13 Pagenburg, 20 Burkhard, 28 Eberlein, 34 Rössl (alle U23-Kader), 35 Schäffler (Muskelprobleme).
Mainz: 1 Wache - 6 Hoogland, 28 Subotic, 4 Noveski, 17 Rose - 21 Karhan, 27 Gunkel, 13 Pekovic, 7 Feulner - 10 Boakye, 9 Borja.
Ersatz: 30 Ischdonat (Tor) - 2 Svensson, 3 D. Vrancic, 5 Demirtas, 8 Baljak, 11 Ruman, 14 Wellington, 15 Neustädter, 18 Liesenfeld, 19 Soto, 20 Jovanovic, 22 Amri, 24 Markolf, 25 M. Vrancic, 31 Laurent, 32 Landeka, 33 Daghfous.
Nicht dabei: Wetklo (Schulter-OP).
Schiedsrichter: Michael Kempter (Sauldorf); Assistenten: Volker Wezel (Tübingen), Thomas Gorniak (Bremen).

And so they did...
Johnson, both Benders had terrible games.
Hoffman and Gregg need to learn to mark as they recover back...gave Mainz that goal.
Schwarz must have had dinner with Ribery b/c that was a nice dive to draw the PK, though he was held and fouled prior to that.
Ref was blowing nothing in the final 10 mins. Not calling the haqmd ball in the 85th must have been a make up for giving the PK. Not calling the foul on Bierfoka outside the area was criminal.
Goektan looked good for the 20 mins he was in.
DiSalvo showed even his off-form is more dangerous than Kucukovic's on-form.
Kucukovic is better off the bench and with Goektan in the game than what he has been asked to play the last 6 games
Wolff, I thought, had a great game, though not visible in the last 20 mins. Before that, was about the only spark around.
Bierofka was not himself.
Tschauner......jury still out.

Ledgerwood will continue his absence after a miracle run by Canada in Olympic Qualifying. After the opening draw with Mexico, Canada had a very disappointing 2-1 loss to Haiti, leaving them with only 1 pt heading into the last game against Guatemala (who had beaten both Haiti and Mexico). Canada put in an unbelievable performance, beating Guatemala 5-0, then had to sweat out the Mexico-Haiti game. Mexico poured it on against 10-man Haiti, then 9-man Haiti, but could only win 5-1. Canada went through as 2nd placed team on goal difference.

And here you have the answer as to who the keeper of the (near) future is for 1860: Tschauner extends to 2011. Yet with young Roessl on the bench behind him Reuter/Kurz have said, "Look Mr. Young-n-Hungry, if you don't keep up the good work Mr. Younger-n-Hungrier is right behind you."

Good news. As long as Tschauner isn't assured anything, this could work out.
I hope Rössl makes the club, cause I want an 1860 keeper jersey and Rössl is pretty close to my last name, Russell - which probably came from that originally anyway...

I just hope he proves me wrong about him. And what is good is that Reuter, Kurz and Ziffer have done such a good job, 1860 won't have to just hand anything to anyone soon.

Watched Nicky play last night against the US. Had a good match and was really the only Canadian player who showed any flair. They played him at left back which was, IMHO, a waste given the lack of creativity the Canucks had overall. He kept getting boo'd by the fans for a confrontation with a US player, but did not phase his game. The Canucks seemed like my U9 team: each player playing in their exact position as I show it to them on the depth chart, afriad to move forward or change positions. The US press creamed all over the US performance, but for my money aside from the Adu set-pieces (one of which was a fluke goal), the only REAL good play was the goal for 3-0. Other than that it was a pretty tame performance from the US. At least Nick will be back in Weiss/Blau very soon.

Which one was the fluke? The one that bounced before it went in? Come on, it was well placed and happened to go in. I wouldn't call that a fluke. There was enough spin on it plus the threat of the run by the other US player, I forget who, to throw off the keeper. It was well deserved.

Yup that one. It was not half as impressive as the announcers were making it sound. Listening to them you'd think Adu was channelling Beckham and Balakov while taking the kick.:D
