PS: Did Josh Wolff get fit for the Fürth match?

According to news reports, he should be ready......

It seems to me that nobody (except for me & Keith) in this thread is interested in the game...

Anybody remembers this guy? ;)

I'm curious how he'll be doing on Sunday...

Not only does it stink that we lost 3-0 at home to Fürth, but now our already thin defense has to go without a red-carded Mate G. for an week.

What sucked the most about that match is that 1860 were the better team for the entire first half and the first part of the second half. They just couldn't take advantage of their chances and it seemed that every time Greuther Fürth had a chance, the ball went in.

This is no loss to hang your head about. 1860 played well, but just had no luck. Especially in the opening stages of the match when Berki Göktan was all alone in front of the Fürth net, slipped and fell on the wet grass as he prepared to score the opening goal.

Josh Wolff, who I thought played well, but "kicker" doesn't, also slipped and fell while trying to convert a goal chance later in the first half.

I was seated next to the pitch in the second set of seats to the left of the 1860 bench. What a view! But next time, I'll sit about 10 rows up. Better to see all the action.

Kicker Key

1-World Class
2-Very Good
3-Good
3.5-Average
4-Slightly Below Average
5-Stunk
6-Sucked out loud, should find a new job

Hofmann (GK) - 2: I agree.

Thorandt - 4: I agree. He was really hustling though.

Ghvinianidze - 5.5: I think they gave him that because of the red card. I would have given him a 4.5 mainly because of the red, which I thought was pretty harsh. I think he got it because Merk was starting to lose control of the match and he had to show them who was boss.

Berhalter - 4: I would have actually given Gregg a "3". There was one play Gregg made after Schwarz went off with his broken nose that I stood up and cheered Gregg for. Fürth striker Stefan Maierhofer (A former Bayern amateur player who is about as big as Jan Koller) had been an asshole on the pitch the entire day, committing fouls and pushing around smaller players. At one point, Maierhofer squared up with Hoffmann and afterwards I think he was messing with Lars Bender. Gregg came running up, chest bumped Maierhofer, who went down like a little bitch trying to draw the red card, and Gregg stayed right on his ass. Gregg got a yellow card for it, but he marked Maierhofer out of the match after that. Gregg is a f#cking new man when compared to last season......

Hoffmann - 4: I would have given Torben a 3.5. I thought it was an average day for him. I think the guy doing the Kicker ratings is looking at the final score too hard. I always thought 1860 were in it until Fürth scored that third goal.

Danny Schwarz - 3: Agree. Was big in midfield until a Lanig elbow (unintentional in my opinion) broke his nose.

Lars Bender - 4: Agree. The kid is getting better and better.

Josh Wolff - 5: As I said above, I f#cking disagree with this one. Josh was all over the place and set up a couple of chances in the first half with crosses his strikers just couldn't get to thanks to the good Fürth defense.

Berki Göktan - 3: Agree. Spark plug of the offense. Really taking well to that #10 role.

di Salvo - 4.5: Should have seen a least a yellow card for an attack on Fürth keeper Kirchstein "disguised" as an effort for the ball. Other than that, I thought he was pretty much invisible.

Subs: Sven Bender for Schwarz in the 36th minute: Bender got a 4. I agree.

Timo Gebhardt for Josh Wolff in the 58th minute: Gebhardt got a 4. Also agree.

Mustafa Kucukovic for Lars Bender in the 58th minute. Kucukovic got a 3. I agree. I thought in those 32 minutes, he looked more dangerous than di Salvo did the entire match. Also, Kucukovic is a lot bigger than I thought he was. He looks like a damned bodybuilder compared to the other '60 players.

Usually, it is hard to chalk up a 3-0 loss to "bad luck."

However, this time, I really believe you can........ :o

BTW, Mate got a straight red card. Unless I didn't see a quick decision from the league, he'll miss more than a week. It'll probably be two or three weeks.

Footyfan, Thanks for the report.

Sounds like an unlucky match to me now too, mostly amplified by the Elfmeter goal. That's really great news about Gregg too, looks like there's more live in those legs. :D

I always thought DiSalvo is pretty good for a few decent matches, but I never saw him as capable of being a sole striker or a long-term answer at forward. Kind of like Agostino's role back in the recent 1. Liga days. Still, it's been nice seeing his finishing ability for those few early matches.

Hopefully Schroth's recovery is going well and we'll see much improvement in that spot after the Winterpause.

That and Fuerth didn't really put it away until six minutes after Mate was sent off.

I was telling "LoewenBoy" the other day that Gregg seems to be a new man this season! Don't know what got into him, but he's been one of the team's best players so far this season.

di Salvo will never be the type of guy who can carry a team himself. He'll get you some goals in spurts, but he also needs another threat out there with him to be more effective. Sadly, Josh Wolff is not that guy.

Hopefully Schroth's recovery is going well and we'll see much improvement in that spot after the Winterpause.

He's the guy who could possibly make diSalvo more effective, but the 1860 offense would be hurt a bit without Josh out there in my opinion. I think Josh does good work out there on the wing and that would be missed. But, I also believe Kurz could make it work.

Here's the lineup for today's match vs. Offenbach:

Good to see Benny Schwarz get a starting spot in Mate's absence. Hopefully die Löwen can come back strong from that disappointing match last week vs. Fürth.

BTW: does Mate's two match ban for the red card last weekend also apply to the 2nd round German Cup match vs. Mainz on Tuesday?

Nice 3-0 win by 1860 this afternoon to jump back into a top-3 spot in the table.

Goalscorers were S. Bender and 2 by Göktan. Our effort was helped by a yellow-red to Ogungbure.

Also, the third current American 1860 player (and former Cal) defender Steve Purdy made it onto the bench for the 1st team. Here's hoping he can get a chance to play soon.

No. It only applies to the Bundesligas.

A touring Vancouver Whitecaps youth team took on 1860 U19's last
Tuesday, Oct 23rd, losing 1-0. I can't find any information on the 1860 lineup for that game. Does anybody have any news from the game? Thanks.
They are meeting again today (combined 1860 U23/U19 supposedly). Again, any information on 1860 lineup would be appreciated.

Here is the game report from the Whitecaps' site:

October 23, 2007
Vancouver Whitecaps FC Residency lost 1-0 to 1860 Munich’s U-19 Junior Bundesliga side on Tuesday.

It was the team’s second match of their two-week trip to Germany, with Thomas Niendorf’s squad losing 2-1 to Bayern Munich U-19’s on Monday.

In a game played under floodlights and on turf, Monday’s goalscorer Randy Edwini-Bonsu missed a major chance to give Whitecaps Residency an lead early in the game.

The Canadian visitors remained dangerous on the counter-attack against an 1860 side that were, for the majority, a year older in age than the Whitecaps. The hosts had lots of possession during the friendly contest, but struggled to create any real chances.

Despite battling throughout Tuesday’s game, 1860 took the lead five minutes after halftime and held on for the one-goal victory.

Though it was a second straight defeat on their German tour, the Residency coaching staff of Niendorf, Steve Meadley, and Joe Martin were delighted with the effort of the youngsters in the first two games.

The group will be back in action on Thursday, as they take on the U-19 Junior Bundesliga team of Jahn Regensburg before meeting VfB Stuttgart’s U-19 Junior Bundesliga side on Saturday. Whitecaps Residency will also play a combined U-19/U-23 team from 1860 Munich on October 30 before completing their schedule with a friendly against amateur club SC Zwiesel of the Lower Bavaria Bezirksoberliga.

Whitecaps FC Residency – starting line-up v 1860 Munich
Simon Thomas, Greg Smith, Adam Straith, Anthony DiNicolo, William Hyde, Devin Gunenc, Philippe Davies, Antonio Rago, Marcus Johnstone, Randy Edwini-Bonsu, Navid Mashinchi

I should have read that release from the Whitecaps more closely. The exhibition game between the travelling Whitecaps youth team and a combined 1860 U23/U19 team is TOMORROW, Oct 30th.

Should be fun. I'd like to see Die Löwen get a little further in the Cup this season...

Here's the lineup: (pretty much our first team, at least until Schroth & Tschauner come back)

1 Hofmann
6 Thorandt, 19 Ghvinianidze, 5 Berhalter, 4 Hoffmann
8 D. Schwarz, 22 L. Bender
11 Wolff, 10 Göktan, 7 Bierofka
9 Di Salvo

Bench: 34 Rössl (GK), 14 Holebas, 17 S. Bender, 18 Gebhart, 23 B. Schwarz, 24 Kucukovic, 26 Baumgartlinger, 27 Ziegenbein, 29 Purdy, 33 Johnson

Out: 12 Tschauner, 20 Burkhard, 21 Schroth, 25 Ledgerwood (hasn't started rehab training yet.), 28 Eberlein, 30 Szukala.

Does anyone know if bundesliga.de will have a ticker for this match? Or do I have to go to the DFB site? Unfortunately, I'm Mac based, so the German web radio site doesn't work for me.

Also has Germany had their Fall time shift yet? Ours in the USA is this weekend.

Nice win by 1860 over Mainz in the cup match today. :D

Göktan with the tiebreaker in the 88th minute!

I wonder who we'll get in the next round. Bayern would be tons of fun, but I'd like to see 1860 go further...

That is great news to beat Mainz. Does this mean a lot more money yet or do they have to win again in the Cup?

The DFB Pokal (German Cup) is not a lot of money. 1860 would have to win it for the money to make a real difference.

Lucky break, we drew Aachen in the German Cup Round-of-16 in January. Maybe Schroth will be back for that.
It's tough to bring home a win at the Tivoli, but Sechzig has a much better chance than having to play one of the big Bundesliga sides.

Also, Thorandt and Bierofka suffered injuries in the Mainz cup match and are questionable for Sunday's match vs. Wehen Wiesbaden.

Here's Kicker's projected lineup:
-------------
M. Hofmann
Ziegenbein, L. Bender, Berhalter, T. Hoffmann
D. Schwarz, S. Bender
Wolff, Göktan, Johnson
Di Salvo

Zeigenbein as a defender?? That will be interesting, but I'm sure he'll be playing up on the wing.

The bench is getting pretty thin too:
Rössl, B. Schwarz, Gebhart, Baumgartlinger, Kucukovic, Holebas.

Maybe Purdy will get on the field with the first team this week...
