The Celtic manager claims the various foreign owners of English clubs will be considering every option as they look for a return on their investments.

And he can see a scenario where Premier League giants and Europe's biggest clubs launch a breakaway league, even if that was in defiance of UEFA and FIFA.

"That's just my idea," he said, "that you might get the top 50 clubs saying, 'Right, that's enough, let's all make the cash and we'll break away, make our own leagues, and UEFA and FIFA can do what they want.'

"You've got to remember there's people from all around the world getting English clubs now - they're big businessmen, where do they make the money?"

Celtic would not want to be marginalised if the biggest clubs in Europe did launch such a league, however until recently their hope was to be allowed to play English clubs.

The likelihood of an European 'rebel' league within the next 5-10 years is probably less than 3%. But just for fun:

How many teams? and Which teams?
Closed system or opened system (promotion/relegation)

I would guess 22 teams for a total of 42 games season.

England (4): Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea
Italy (4): AC Milan, Inter Milan, Juventus, Roma
Spain (4): Real Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia and ???
Scotland (2): Celtic, Ranger
Netherland(2): Ajax and PSV
Portugal (2): Porto and ??? (Sporting or Benfica)
Germany(2): Bayern Munich and ???
France(2): Lyon and ???

If the Premiership can get $400 mil a year in International TV rights, this league could easily get $1 bil a year. If EPL can gets $1.1 billion a year in Domestic TV rights, the domestic TV rights for this league could be worth around $3 billion a year. Total: $4 bil a year.

Equal revenue sharing of TV rights: $4 bil / 22 clubs = $182 mil a year.
Also, imagine a soft salary cap of $200 million a year to ensure a relative playing field. Each year, at least 10 clubs could challenge for the title. LOL. It's fun to daydream.

Zzzzz.

Indeed. It's certainly a close race as to whether this type of thread or the "MLS teams in Champions League" type is the most tedious.
