In all honesty, after seeing:

1. Diego pick up careless yellows in the Champions League, causing him to be suspended for the group stage do-or-die match....for the SECOND consecutive year

2. him pull his idiotic stunt against Karlsruhe getting a 3-game suspension (including the rückrunde game in schalke  )

3. Werder go on to win the big CL match as huge underdogs (again, for the second consecutive year) and also the final game of the 1st half, both without him on the field

I'd been seriously hoping to see Diego be sold during the break. After this last incident with the police and his "one glass of wine" (according to his statements in the latest kicker article...sure dude, we believe you), it's obvious this guy is becoming a cancer to the team, and isn't reliable on any level - on the field or off it.

I think it's time to take the €20-25M and run. Let Juve deal with him. While Diego is certainly the most talented player on the team and one of the most talented in the Bundesliga, his BS, temper and inconsistency has really started to be a negative drag on the team, and selling him would be a case of addition by subtraction.

And while Özil certainly isn't yet up to the level of Diego yet, the guy's fantastic performances while filling the suspended Brazilian's shoes against both Inter and Bielefeld definitely show he's good enough to handle a central role in the team's attack now. Considering all of the exterior baggage with Diego, I'd say that I've got as much confidence in a Werder team with Özil at the helm as I do in one with the Brazilian munchkin.

Unfortunately, I guess it will have to wait until the summer window since there hasn't been a single peep about any teams interested in Diego. Why would any team want to spend €20-25 on a headcase who is already cup-tied in Europe for the rest of the season? Let's hope he keeps his value through July 1.

It's sad because I use to be a huge fan of the player....

€20-25m? No friggin way. We should not start negotiations unless €30m are on the table at least. Hopefully, Man City will show interest in signing him, would make sense in many ways for them (Diego instead of Kaka; Diego and Robinho are good friends since the Santos days, and Robinho apparently feels lonely in Manchester, and 'demands' Brazilians to be signed).

If it's Man City who are interested in buying, then just double the figure I wrote in my post. :D

F*ck, Christian Vander got a cruciate ligament rupture in yesterdays match.

If Wiese doesn´t get fit soon, either Sebastian Mielitz or Nico Pellatz have to stand between the posts in the DFB cup at Wolfsburg.

Yeah, just posted it in the Bayern matchday thread. Awful stuff, as if the Wolfsburg match isn't difficult enough already...

Poor Vander, really would have deserved more games after the great match yesterday.

This is just unbelievable. Why do we need for every step ahead to be sent two behind?
I'm just waiting for august 2009 and the new season. I'm getting the feeling this one is doomed.

Does anyone now the status of Fabrice Begeorgi?

I know he is currently loaned from OM and playing for the reserves, but is that just for experience or is he one Bremen are looking at for the future?

He is at us to strengthen the reserve and prevent them from relegation.
If he does well, Werder will negotiate with Marseille.

Naldo got an injury in training yesterday and his apperance vs. Frankfurt is doubtful.

Way to pull this thread out of the attic Eisenfuss. Never seen it before and there's alot of history here if you read through it...thanx! Oh yeah, the Naldo injury sux but thank goodness it's minor as I don't fancy Prodl at all. I hope Wiese and Mertes can cover up his mistakes or the offense just keeps scoring too much to care. Look at the bright side...after the Demichelis injury we have a better defence than Bayern !

C/P INJURY NEWS

Demichelis blow for Bayern
August 6, 2009

Bayern Munich will be without central defender Martin Demichelis for up to two months after he damaged ankle ligaments in training. The Argentinian tore ligaments in his right ankle in an innocuous challenge in training and will need an operation next week, followed by six or seven weeks of rest.
Bayern coach Louis van Gaal therefore only has three central defenders to choose from for his side's first Bundesliga match of the season at Hoffenheim on Saturday.
Youngsters Holger Badstuber and Breno are vying for a position alongside Daniel van Buyten for the first two months of the season.
"The length of this injury break is obviously bitter," said Bayern's director of sport Christian Nerlinger on the club's website.
"Martin has trained very intensely and played in the starting XI against Neckarelz.
"Let's just hope that the healing process goes perfectly and we can have him back as soon as possible."

Congrats to Philip Bargfrede who was nominated for the German U21 team after his excellent season preparations!

Naldo will extend his contract next week to 2013. It is only an extended by one year.

Almeida and Prödl will miss the Euro league trip to Kazachstan, because of injury. A question mark is behind Aaron Hunt.

Is Moreno still with his minor ankle injury? Or has he just under-impressed during team training sessions?

I am just wondering why he hasn't had a lot of post-Sanogo playing time. I was looking forward to seeing an all-South American attack with him and Pizarro and it hasn't came about.

(That being said, though, I like the results we've been getting with the Aaron Hunt 4-5-1.)

I think Marcelo Moreno needs some time to adopt. It is a race between Hunt and him for the spot beside Pizarro today.

i think Hunt is passed... He has great talent but all his injuries didn't allow him enough time to play matches... now he is being surpassed by talents like Bargfrede and Oehrl. Too bad. He should be sold and try his luck somewhere else i think.

Unfortunately I have not been able to catch any games yet this season. Are Bremen still employing the 4-4-2 with the diamond in the middle, or has it changed? I really wish I could see how Marin is fitting into the squad and how Ozil is maturing.

I really wish I could see how Marin is fitting into the squad and how Ozil is maturing. The diamond is gone. Other than that, there hasn't been a fixed formation all year. We have experimented with a 4-5-1 to shore up our defence a bit, but even this has been fairly variable...

Great honor for Bargfrede to be compared to Werder legend Eilts. We can be very happy if he manages to become half the player Eilts was. Good article (German).

As I wrote a few days ago, it's exactly his great work rate and aggressiveness on the pitch what makes him so valuable for us these days, in addition to his footballing qualities. I wanted us to sign a player with these qualities this summer, for reasons often explained. So it's just great to see that a player from our own youth filled the gap. To be honest, this fast progress couldn't be expected, although he already looked promising in the preparation.

Hope he keeps it up and continues to improve in the coming months.

yes, that's exactly what we need right now. If he continues to develop at this rate, we'll have a great player on our hands. But it was about time that our youth system produced another profi. It's always great to raise own stars.

Too bad Testroet was injured, he started the season very strong for Werder II and looks like he will be ready for the BuLi team soon. Unlucky for him.
