Let's say that there was no WW2 and the 1942 and 1946 World Cups had been played as planned. Who would probably have won them? Which countries had the best sides and players at that time? Some people say it would be Argentina because of Di Steffano. What do you think?

Without knowing hosts, it's tough to make educated guesses.

This is a good question. Unfortunately, I have no clue.

They'd have beaten Poland, Holland, France and Belgium quite easily. But if they came up against England or the USSR they'd have found it a bit tougher.

Hungary might have had a chance in '46.

Its spelled "Übermenschen". The word goes back to Nietzsche in origin.
What ever, Germany was 3rd 1934 but reached only the round of the last 16 in 1938, despite the "Übermenschen" (and the Austrians). :D
So I think it would have been another team.
Perhaps Uruguay, they were really strong during this period. Or Italy.

Wasn't the 40s the years of the powerful Real Madrid? Maybe it could be the base of a victorious Spain.

Real Madrid in the 1940?
Strong in Spain, or what?

Nah, it was in the second half of the 1950's when Madrid became the kings of Spanish and European soccer. Before that, the most successful team in Spain had been Athletic Bilbao.
I'd say that either Argentina, Uruguay, Italy, or Hungary in '42 and '46 would be the favorites.

Yeah, to think that the football history would be more richer if it wasn't for that stupid war. Those goddamn germans! ;)

England or Scotland might have won it if they entered.

No discussions on 1946 World Cup yet, but there were 3 candidates for 1942:

As a fan of Boca Juniors I hate to admit it, but if Argentina based their team on the great River Plate teams which dominated the local league in the 40's, (called 'La Maquina'), with Labruna, Lostau (sp?), plus Di Stefano, I think they could beat anybody.

Considering that Italy won the Cup in 1934 and 1938, they would have been one of the favorites.

Don't forget that the US would have had Sly Stallone in goal during that time. Makes Yashin '66 look like an orange cone.
