OK. Someone I've worked with for the last six years is taking his family to their first footy match in London in August (the Arse are away at Blackburn so he's probably going to see Fulham). He asked for a "football glossary". Here's what I have so far. Everyone add to it and edit it (especially the drinking bit at the end!) :)
-------------------------------------
Basic football terms:
UK US
football = soccer (NEVER call it soccer!)
league = every team plays the other twice, home and away, three points for a win, one for a draw. most points wins, goal diff. tie breaker
cup = playoff-type competition
fixture list = schedule
fixture = league game
tie = cup game
draw = tie
match = game
table = standings
pitch = field
grounds = stadium
side = team
stand = section of seats in stadium
bank = section of seats in stadium
kick off = kick off
nil = zero
full time = end of 90 minutes
injury time = time tacked on by the official at the end to make up for stoppages
Other very useful football-related terms:
friendly = exhibition
booking = yellow card
sending off = red card
Hooof! = when the visiting team just belts the ball upfield
belter = amazing shot/goal
cracker = amazing shot/goal
sitter = easy goal
playing a blinder = playing awesome
having a nightmare = playing terrible
bottler = choker
supporters = fans (also, "who do you support?")
away section = for supporters of the visiting team
pitch invasion = fans storming the pitch
steward = security in the ground
nutmeg = dribbling through someone's legs
keeper = goalkeeper
man of the match = MVP
4-4-2 = typical english footbal formation, four defenders/four midfielders/two forwards
center half = central defender
brace = two (as in goals, "he scored a brace today")
transfer = trade (players are bought and sold, rarely traded for other players)
signing = new player
reserves = practice team
club = professional team
country = national team
premiership/premier league = top league in england (doesn't include rest of UK)
championship = second league in england
first division = third league in england
FA = Football Association (runs all leagues, several cup competitions, and the national team)
promotion/relegation = top/bottom three teams go up/down a league after each season
The Drop = relegation
Europe = various cup competitions against similar teams from across the continent (esp. Champions League)
Other useful drinking-related terms:
off license = beer store
taking the piss = messing with someone
taking the mick = messing with someone
piss up = drinking session
bollocks = bullshit/crap/balls/etc
rubbish = crap
