You have Celtic/Liverpool - "You'll Never Walk Alone."
Sons of Ben - Four Leaf Clover
We need a song
Some quick options;
Meet Me In St. Louis 3sGWWl92BiU
"Meet me in St. Louis, Louis,
Meet me at the fair,
Don't tell me the lights are shining
any place but there;
We will dance the Hoochee Koochee,
I will be your tootsie wootsie,
If you will meet in St. Louis, Louis,
Meet me at the fair."
Oh, When the Saints B-LCvbNAS3I
We are trav'ling in the footsteps
Of those who've gone before
And we'll all be reunited,
On a new and sunlit shore,
Oh, when the saints go marching in,
Oh, when the saints go marching in
Lord how I want to be in that number
When the saints go marching in
And when the sun begins to shine
And when the sun begins to shine
Lord, how I want to be in that number
When the sun begins to shine
Oh, when the saints go marching in,
Oh, when the saints go marching in
Lord how I want to be in that number
When the saints go marching in
Oh, when the trumpet sounds its call
Oh, when the trumpet sounds its call
Lord, how I want to be in that number
When the trumpet sounds its call
Oh, when the saints go marching in,
Oh, when the saints go marching in
Lord how I want to be in that number
When the saints go marching in
And if we really want to get rocking:
The Saints Are Coming wT9eQ2smjUM
Dunfermline Athletic sing it also.
There is also a U2/Greenday cover
I cried to my daddy on the telephone
how long now
Until the clouds unroll and you come home
the line went
But the shadows still remain since your descent
your descent
The saints are coming, the saints are coming
No matter how I try, I realize there’s no reply
The saints are coming, the saints are coming
A drowning sorrow floods the deepest grief
How long now
Until a weather change condemns belief
The stone says
This paternal guide once had his day
Once had his day
The saints are coming, the saints are coming
No matter how I try, I realize there’s no reply
The saints are coming, the saints are coming

I like the idea of being something very local oriented. It'd be great if we had something by a local group or artist. Fragile Porceline Mice comes to mind.

How about "Johnny B Goode" by Chuck Berry?
Johnny B. Goode
Artist: Chuck Berry
Deep down Louisiana close to New Orleans
Way back up in the woods among the evergreens
There stood a log cabin made of earth and wood
Where lived a country boy named Johnny B. Goode
Who never ever learned to read or write so well
But he could play the guitar just like a ringing a bell
Go go
Go Johnny go
Go
Go Johnny go
Go
Go Johnny go
Go
Go Johnny go
Go
Johnny B. Goode
He used to carry his guitar in a gunny sack
Go sit beneath the tree by the railroad track
Oh, the engineerswould see him sitting in the shade
Strumming with the rhythm that the drivers made
People passing by they would stop and say
Oh my that little country boy could play
Go go
Go Johnny go
Go
Go Johnny go
Go
Go Johnny go
Go
Go Johnny go
Go
Johnny B. Goode
His mother told him "Someday you will be a man,
And you will be the leader of a big old band.
Many people coming from miles around
To hear you play your music when the sun go down
Maybe someday your name will be in lights
Saying Johnny B. Goode tonight."
Go go
Go Johnny go
Go go go Johnny go
Go go go Johnny go
Go go go Johnny go
Go
Johnny B. Goode
I think "All Washed Up" by The Urge (A Band that started in St. Louis) would be a great taunt song, especially the chorus (bold and underlined below)
All Washed Up (Amazon.com sound clip (http://www.amazon.com/gp/music/wma-pop-up/B000002BPA001002/ref=mu_sam_wma_001_002/102-0265646-4866525))
The Urge
take a look don't you know i don't care about you
not a one thing you won't do
to get attention from the ones who ignore
now don't cast all your friends away
there's only one thing i can say
hey man you're sick and rotten to the core
hey you're all washed up
would you please shut up
take a walk that way
hey you're all washed up
would you please shut up
take a walk that way
take a look pay attention to the words i say
so little time for you to get away
run to the door in a panicked fury of fear
no hope cause you'll never get the message anyway
they let you in so your gonna stay
but beware of my boot and a bottle of beer
hey you're all washed up
would you please shut up
take a walk that way
hey you're all washed up
would you please shut up
take a walk that way
mr. mr. you make me sick
i ain't gonna fall for that same old trick
won't you turn around and take a trip back
to the other side of town you drip buttercup
buttercup you're all washed up
get out of my face and shut the ******** up
no business cards or that fake ass stuff
bouncer's on your ass so you better hurry up
take a look don't you know i don't care about you
not a one thing you won't do
to get attention from the ones who ignore
now don't cast all your friends away
there's only one thing i can say

I think a lot of it depends, are we looking for a song to be played over the loudspeaker at a game, or are we looking for a chant that is done solely by the crowd, or are we looking for something where the music itself if pumped in, but the singing would all be done by the crowd?
Technically, this is a jingle for Budweiser, but they figure to be a sponsor of any team we get anyway, and it's already played at Cardinals games.
Below are the original lyrics, perhaps they could be reworked to focus on the team, not the beer:
Here comes The King, here comes the big Number One!
Budweiser beer, the king is second to none.
Just say Budweiser, you've said it all.
Here comes The King Of Beers, so lift your glass, let's hear the call.
Budweiser Beer's the one that's leading the rest,
And beechwood aging makes it beer at its best.
One taste'll tell you so loud and clear.
There's only one Budweiser beer, there's only one Budweiser beer!
When you say Bud there's nothing left you can say.
(When you say Bud!)
When you say Bud, The King is right on his way!
(When you say Bud!)
The King is coming, let's hear the call,
When you say Bud you've said it all.
When you say Bud you've said it all!
Ya da da da da da da da da da da
(Here comes The King...!)

In the tradition of changing lyrics to soccer terms....
(Set to the tune of Louie Louie)
St. Louie Louie
Oh baby we really need a goal.
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah SAINT
Louie Louie
Oh baby we really need a goal.
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah.
We could make verses with players names in them.
I also like the idea of using the "Take a Walk" Chorus from the Urge. Good call.
Did someone mention Fragile Porcelein Mice? I can't even remember what song they did.

Strange thing about Forever Blowin Bubbles and YNWA is that the supporters sing the real words despite the lack of relevance.
We will be doing the same with 4 Leaf. Though if Bill Haley (from Chester) played his card's write and did a decent ballad, we might entertain a song from a Chester native (Like Liverpudians Gerry & the Pacemakers taking YNWA off Broadway and on to the radio)

You are correct. I should have clarified in the original post.
I think that IN ADDITION TO CHANTS, there needs to be a popular song that even the casual fan can sing along with. It helps get everyone involved.
It's like giant karaoke - music piped in (no vocals) - lyrics on the Jumbo - fans singing.
It doesn't even need to be relevant.
Think Sweet Caroline and the Red Sox

Another suggestion:
More Than A Feeling - Boston
I woke up this morning and the sun was gone,
Turned on some music to start my day.
I lost myself in a familiar song,
I closed my eyes and I slipped away.
(Chorus)
It's more than a feeling (more than a feeling)
When I hear that old song they used to play (more than a feeling).
I begin dreaming (more than a feeling)
Till I see Marianne walk away.
I see my Marianne walking away.
So many people have come and gone,
Their faces fade as the years go by;
Yet I still recall as I wander on,
As clear as the sun in the summer sky.
(Chorus)
[Guitar Solo]
When I'm tired and thinking cold
I hide in my music, forget the day,
And dream of a girl I used to know.
I closed my eyes and she slipped away.
She slipped away.

How about "Big River" by Johnny Cash
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yBLgtKVwptA
Now I taught the weeping willow how to cry,
And I showed the clouds how to cover up a clear blue sky.
And the tears that I cried for that woman are gonna flood you Big River.
Then I'm gonna sit right here until I die.
I met her accidentally in St. Paul (Minnesota).
And it tore me up every time I heard her drawl, Southern drawl.
Then I heard my dream was back Downstream cavortin' in Davenport,
And I followed you, Big River, when you called.
Then you took me to St. Louis later on (down the river).
A freighter said she's been here but she's gone, boy, she's gone.
I found her trail in Memphis, but she just walked up the block.
She raised a few eyebrows and then she went on down alone.
Now, won't you batter down by Baton Rouge, River Queen, roll it on.
Take that woman on down to New Orleans, New Orleans.
Go on, I've had enough; dump my blues down in the gulf.
She loves you, Big River, more than me.
Now I taught the weeping willow how to cry, cry, cry
And I showed the clouds how to cover up a clear blue sky.
And the tears that I cried for that woman are gonna flood you Big River.
Then I'm gonna sit right here until I die.
Or "I got stripes" if the jerseys are striped.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BasIv1GE8sU
On A Monday I Was Ar-rested (Uh Huh)
On A Tuesday They Locked Me In The Jail (Oh Boy)
On A Wednesday My Trial Was At-tested
On A Thursday They Said Guilty And The Judge's Gavel Fell
I Got Stripes --- Stripes Around My Shoulders
I Got Chains --- Chains Around My Feet
I Got Stripes --- Stripes Around My Shoulders
And Them Chains --- Them Chains They're About To Drag Me Down
On A Monday My Momma Come To See Me
On A Tuesday They Caught Me With A File
On A Wednesday I'm Down In Solitary
On A Thursday I Start On Bread And Water For A While
I Got Stripes --- Stripes Around My Shoulders
I Got Chains --- Chains Around My Feet
I Got Stripes --- Stripes Around My Shoulders
And Them Chains --- Them Chains They're About To Drag Me Down
I Got Stripes --- Stripes Around My Shoulders

I like the idea, but one of the problems is that baseball, with its breaks every half inning, has a lot of ready-made breaks, each of which are perfect for a quick song. Soccer doesn't really have that, unless it's something we do as the players are coming back out of the locker room before the start of the second half.
But, if we're looking for a song that everyone can know the words to, that lightens the mood/lifts the spirits, I suggest:
Monty Python's "Always Look On The Bright Side of Life"
Some things in life are bad
They can really make you mad
Other things just make you swear and curse.
When you're chewing on life's gristle
Don't grumble, give a whistle
And this'll help things turn out for the best...
And...always look on the bright side of life...
Always look on the light side of life...
If life seems jolly rotten
There's something you've forgotten
And that's to laugh and smile and dance and sing.
When you're feeling in the dumps
Don't be silly chumps
Just purse your lips and whistle - that's the thing.
And...always look on the bright side of life...
Always look on the light side of life...
For life is quite absurd
And death's the final word
You must always face the curtain with a bow.
Forget about your sin - give the audience a grin
Enjoy it - it's your last chance anyhow.
So always look on the bright side of death
Just before you draw your terminal breath
Life's a piece of shit
When you look at it
Life's a laugh and death's a joke, it's true.
You'll see it's all a show
Keep 'em laughing as you go
Just remember that the last laugh is on you.
And always look on the bright side of life...
Always look on the right side of life...
(Come on guys, cheer up!)
Always look on the bright side of life...
Always look on the bright side of life...
(Worse things happen at sea, you know.)
Always look on the bright side of life...
(I mean - what have you got to lose?)
(You know, you come from nothing - you're going back to nothing.
What have you lost? Nothing!)
Always look on the right side of life...
This is already something that gets sung at matches in England on occasion. It's a funny song, easy to know the words to, and of course if our team ends up with the name "knights," there's a perfect tie-in to the black knight (who always triumphs!).

Hey. Just found this forum, and it's awesome to have a place to keep up with news and ideas re: an StL MLS squad.
my two cents: I LOVE The Saints Are Coming. Great song, and definitely conducive to chants. The Skids version is the best, but I'm guessing that the U2/Greenday version would be the one used. The only problem I could see is that The Saints (NFL) may use it, as the U2/Greenday version was written for a Katrina benefit and performed at the first game back at the Superdome.
I also like The Urge suggestion, for in-game taunts. Never was a big fan of Fragile Porcelin Mice, and none of their songs that I'm familiar with seem great for chants/taunts. Same with Gravity Kills. But there are some definite possibilities with local ties with the Uncle Tupelo/Wilco/Son Volt heritage (e.g. "No Depression"). If the team ends up with any sort of religious tie-in referencing the city's French Catholic heritage (i.e. "The St. Louis Saints" or something), then we could chant, um, actual chants. Obviously, there would have to be some new lyrics penned, but it could be cool, esp. as taunts. And changing lyrics to some songs to fit the opposing team (i.e. "My Kind of Town, Chicago Is" becomes "Some Worthless Team, Chicago Is" or something).
Please Please Please no "Heat Is On," "Meet Me in St. Louis" (esp. if the stadium is in Collinsville), Monty Python (I love them, but improper context, I think), or anything by Boston, Journey, Frampton, etc. Also, I'm sick to death of hearing nothing but "Ole" and "Zombie Freak" at matches. A bit of originality would be plus.

I was just referred over here from Facebook (St. Louis Deserves and MLS Team)... lots of good discussions going on over here!
I gotta say, I love the idea of a taunt chant based on ANY Urge song. Can you imagine heckling a beaten keeper with that one, right behind his goal? Makes me wish I didn't move to Denver for school.

If we are looking for songs that everyone likes to pass the time, Bohemian Rhapsody by Quenn is always a good choice. It transcends generations.

Being a lifelong fan of punk music, I'd love to have "I fought the law" by The Clash as one of our songs. BUT - it's almost tailored for us because we can easily change the lyrics to fit our city:
I fought The Lou
and the
Lou Won
I fought The Lou
and the
Lou Won
Also, we can easily use either S-T-L or Saint-Lou-is in place of "Here-we-go"
set to the melody of "Stars and Stripes Forever".
or easily slip St. Louis into a popular English song:
And it's St. Louis Wanderers
<clap clap clap>
St. Louis Wanderers FC
is by far
the greatest team
the world has ever seen

Who's "Quenn" j/k
I don't know that we could pull that off.
The song has 6 different sections.
And speaking of Quenn, "We are the Champions" should only be sung when you are in fact the champions.
