Here's Lisa Olson of DailyNews reporting from Cal.

It seems that reporting about soccer or Beckham has been handed down to female reporters in all major newspapers around the country.

I know women are the most excited about him, but I think it will hurt the sport, if men start thinking of it as a chick's flick.
It's nice to get a lot of women out there, but ultimately, they're not the ones that get piss drunk and chant all game long :D
This is not the beatles having women shriek and faint all over the stadium, lol

You could also point to the women's national team's success and the nationwide phenomenon of girl's soccer to make a case that it is appropriate for women to report on soccer.
How about the way ESPN balances out coverage of some soccer games with Julie Foudy well before Beckham's arrival.
Surely, ESPN researches who their target audience is.
But in the long run, I doubt if it is something to worry about, that women will replace the male soccer pundits.

Not sure if Lisa Olson is the best example to use for your argument about female reporters. She actually knows her stuff (just read her bio) and (gasp) knows about football (sorry, soccer). Flip Bondy's covered soccer a bunch for the Daily News, but he's always been a bit of a grinch.
Sure, there are plenty of women covering the Beckham circus, but Olson actually knows her stuff and wrote a good column.

I can't decide if this is spectacularly stupid and wrong or just spectacularly wrong.

I just heard the local female "news anchor" say the the Galaxy/Chelsea game "was more about the red carpet than soccer."
I guess she doesn't know who or what Chelsea is, or what soccer is all about, for that matter. She dropped names like Katie "Cruise" Holmes, Eva Longoria, etc. Not a word about Drogba or Terry or even Donovan.
Soccer in America still has a ways to go, it seems. :(

When Beckham appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated, he was on red carpet; some have said they are rolling out the red carpet for Beckham.
Note, this story from Mexico: "Alfombra roja (red carpet) en el debut de Beckham con el Galaxy" - http://www.milenio.com/mexico/laaficion/nota.asp?id=531389
Someone did say in the big soccer boards, that this was more of an event than a game. Maybe the game had a "sports take" and a "news take" as well. It depends on what point of view it is coming from.
I mean for Chelsea, it is still just a friendly almost exhibition game; I did not read much about Chelsea versus the South Korean team Suwon the other night either, but I do know Drogba got a goal per a live soccer score board. There are many stories on this LA Galaxy game and I posted the thread "World Wide Coverage of Becks"; I mean, I am not sure if Italian, French or German reports are making a big deal out of covering John Terry and teammates either.
And when Beckham got chopped down in the 90th minute; I think there could be some jealousy-like feelings out there from the English Club, though I would not bet on it. Galaxy players fell for a lot of the game (and let's not forget the elbow to Essien as well in the box). Possible errant reporting or possibly true reporting had a story that teammates were jealous of Beckham at the world cup in Germany since he gets so much publicity.

Lisa Olson regularly reports on the Yankees, and she definitely knows her stuff.
