View Full Version : What Happens to Bad Referees?

As a non-ref I've been wondering: What happens to referees when they make bad mistakes? I don't mean house league refs but rather professional refs working major international tournaments. While no one is perfect, the U20 tournament (to pick just one example) has had games where refs made terrible decisions with serious consequences to the outcome of games. What happens when refs mess up at that level? Is there some sort of review process or disipline process? Do they get fired? Who is responsible for overseeing them?

They can't really change decisions on the field with the exception of red and yellow card stuff. I.e. if a player does something that deserves a red card, and the referee doesn't see, or only shows a yellow to, they can review it and suspend the player regardless.
If a referee really screws up, his job is on the line. He'll be taken from the highest level games and put on lower level games until he is shown to have shaped up.

Depends on what bad referees do! If it's fraudulent they go to jail, like our friend in Germany.
If it's just bad foul recognition and man management, your assignor will probably be looking for replacements for your potential spots. And the bad referees will be looking for assignors with assignments they can handle or they can retire.

I don't know about anywhere else but in England they tend to get a column in the newspaper.

They can't really change decisions on the field ...It depends on what the decision was. If it was a matter of judgement, you are correct, there is no change.
However if the Laws are misapplied, then the game can be replayed. The best example of which was the UZB WC qualifier game when the referee misapplied the then-new restarts on a penalty kick infraction (to the detriment of UZB, who protested the original game).

We go to Referee Hell where the players, fans and coaches question every single call we make, treat us like we have no clue about the game and taunt us with abusive slurs and cat-calls.
Er, wait, sorry....that's a normal game.

Except that in Referee Hell little Johnny's mom (you know the one -- the shrieker who never stops) follows you around about five feet back and the RH rules do not allow you to do anything about it.

Hence the application of my own personal Law 18...don't get caught staring. I know it should be: don't stare but c'mon, really...
Besides, I was watching something important related to the match.

Did a match with the on-field comms system. The CR kept saying, "blond, second row behind the corner flag.":D

I suppose that there are different ways to interpret what is meant by 'bad referees'.
